Book Englishes Around the World General studies British Isles North America

Download or read book Englishes Around the World General studies British Isles North America written by Edgar Werner Schneider and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two volumes of Englishes around the World present high-quality original research papers written in honour of Manfred Görlach, founder and editor of the journal English World-Wide and the book series Varieties of English Around the World. The papers thematically focus on the field that Manfred Görlach has helped to build and shape. Volume 1 contains articles on general topics and studies of what might be termed “Old” Englishes, varieties of English that have been rooted in their respective regions for a long time and have been traditional focal points of scholarly study. The first section contains eight general and comparative papers (dealing with terminological matters or definitions of core concepts, historical issues, structural comparisons across a wide range of varieties); the second one has nine papers on dialects of English as used in the British Isles (covering England, Scotland, Ulster and Ireland); and finally, there are four contributions on North American varieties of English (including Southern English, African American Vernacular English, Newfoundland Vernacular English, and American English in a historical perspective). The thematic scope comprises the levels of lexis, phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, and orthography, as well as sociohistorical issues, the question of the evolution and transmission of dialects, various sources of evidence including literary dialect.

Book The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature written by Roberto Gonzalez Echevarría and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-09-19 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature is by far the most comprehensive work of its kind ever written. Its three volumes cover the whole sweep of Latin American literature (including Brazilian) from pre-Colombian times to the present, and contain chapters on Latin American writing in the USA. Volume 3 is devoted partly to the history of Brazilian literature, from the earliest writing through the colonial period and the Portuguese-language traditions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and partly also to an extensive bibliographical section in which annotated reading lists relating to the chapters in all three volumes of The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature are presented. These bibliographies are a unique feature of the History, further enhancing its immense value as a reference work.

Book Post invasion Panama

Download or read book Post invasion Panama written by Orlando J. Pérez and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 20, 1989, the United States sent over ten thousand troops to Panama to overthrow the military government led by General Manuel Noriega. More than ten years after the invasion, how has the country adjusted? In this volume, scholars of Panamanian politics and society examine the political, economic, and social changes the country has faced following the U.S. invasion. In addition, they analyze the prospects for democratic stability as Panama prepares to take over control of the Panama Canal. Post-Invasion Panama is an important book for scholars of foreign policy and international relations interested in the United States's controversial role as an international police force.

Book The Latest Early American Literature

Download or read book The Latest Early American Literature written by R. C. De Prospo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latest Early American Literature, according to readers for the University of Delaware Press, is “a collection of polemics and manifestoes.” In it R. C. De Prospo bids to follow in the footsteps of the two, rare, early Americanist dissenters whom Philip F. Gura once distinguished as “prophets without honor in the field”: William Spengemann and Michael Colacurcio. The book contends that a supposedly retired nationalist/modernist “telos” continues to reign in most of the latest scholarship, and even more influentially in all of the current literary histories and anthologies, no matter how expansive in gender, ethnic, racial, and “hemispheric” inclusiveness they profess to be. Old teloi, in particular that old American exceptionalist one, can be cunning. Updating and expanding upon essays written over the past thirty years, De Prospo proposes not only negatively to critique how the latest scholarly receptions of early American literature differ insignificantly from the earlier ones, but positively to propose how a transnationalist concession—that as a neocolonial culture America’s lags behind that of Europe—might advance post-modern historiography by radically repositioning the past as no longer the present’s diachronic predecessor but, to quote Lyotard’s semiotics, its synchronic “differend.” Closer to earth, De Prospo tries at the same time to remain mindful of the pedagogical imperative that ultimately to save the texts of early American literature will require making them legible to average non-specialist, never-to-become specialist undergraduate general education students. To facilitate this he introduces in the concluding section of The Latest Early American Literature what will probably be taken as its most radical intervention: the redefinition of Edgar Allan Poe as an early American writer.
