To note specifically a single instance: the collection Of inverte brate fossils was considered twenty or more years ago to be well provided for a normal increase and development. Appointed Curator in 1912, Professor P. E. Raymond has by his knowledge, persistence, and in great measure by his personal field-work, SO increased the collection that four large rooms are overcrowded with classified material awaiting distribution, and large accumula tions as yet unstudied. These additions are not duplications, but are in large part from faunas unrepresented or poorly represented in previously acquired collections. The same condition prevails with the collections of lower verte brates, birds, mammals, and with many groups of invertebrates. As noted several years ago, the only betterment of Museum research facilities involves the elimination or further curtailment of laboratory work in the Museum; a realization Of the former would lessen the natural anxiety felt for the safe preservation of absolutely irreplaceable collections, collections that should be free from the dangers unavoidable with present-day experimental work. The assistants appointed for the year were: Dr. W. P. Haynes and Messrs. Francis Chamberlain, F. L. Cole, Sidney Powers, H. M. Sampson, E. W. Shuler, Edward Wiggles worth, and H. N. Witt. The Department was fortunate enough to secure the services of Dr. Ralph Arnold, who in April gave a course of ten lectures on the Geology of petroleum. He came at the joint invitation of this Department and the Department of Geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, half of the course being given at each' institution. The lectures were most stimulating and the geologists of Boston owe much to Dr. Arnold for his generosity in interrupting his busy professional life to give his masterly summary Of a subject so important in eco nomics and technology. The success of this informal course illustrates the need of a permanent professorship in the geology of the non-metals. The number of Students reached by the Department shows another gratifying increase. A comparative table gives its amount; it refers, however, only to courses taken during the winter sessions. This was natural, because invertebrate material could be collected more economi cally and stored more compactly than vertebrate material and, moreover, Louis and Alexander Agassiz were both deeply in terested in the invertebrate field and bought several great collec tions in Europe which at once established this Museum as a natural center for investigators of many invertebrate groups. Of the vertebrates the fishes were the only favored class. Here again the same reasons produced the same results and the Museum has long been noted for its resources and investigations and in recent years, especially, concerning the early and very primitive fishes. Some years ago it became obvious that our collections were badly out of balance and the needs of students interested in stratigraphic geology, as well as comparative anatomy, made it clear that we must have a better representation of the other groups and, although inadequately equipped to do so, I have been myself fussing with Palaeontology for some years. The result, however, has been eminently satisfactory inasmuch as we now have material sufficient to warrant our inviting a Vertebrate Palaeontologist interested in the higher groups to come here and work. Alfred Sherwood Romer has joined the Staff of the Museum as well as that of the Division of Biology. He offers no course this year but will spend his time organizing the collections so that they may be profitably used in connection with his teaching next year and he has some most promising investigations already under way.
