Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts General Hospital, for the Year 1837 In relation t0'the importance of a thorough, persevering trial in cases of considerable duration and which resist immediate treat ment, it is a subject of congratulation that we probably are enabled generally to make a fuller trial than formerly. The public is more aware of the successful results which have not unfrequently crowned persevering efforts, and the establishment and repeated enlargement of that noble institution, the State Lunatic Hospital at Worcester for the relief of those'whose means are exhausted or limited, has doubtless prevented the placing of many individuals with us, the length of whose residence would from necessity be too contracted for an adequate trial of the usual remedial means. We have had the satisfaction of returning to their friends entirely restored, several interesting individuals in whom no apparent im provement was manifested after many months' residence; one of whom particularly may be instanced, a young mechanic whose mother, a widow in moderate circumstances, persevered an entire year without his being to a superficial observer any nearer resto ration, and was on the point of abandoning all hope, when the generous interposition of a mercantile firm of the same vicinity secured his residence here another quarter, which resulted in his entire recovery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts General Hospital, for the Year 1845 In a curative point of view, an attention to these mat ters which some might. Have regarded as fastidious or exaggerated, has been well rewarded. It is true, that provision Of articles of mere elegance, will not compensate for the absence Of competent medical and moral direction, - of suitable architectural means of classification and in spection, or of intelligent, friendly and faithful attendants and nurses. Having these in an abundance'only measured by the extent to which they can be advantageously employ ed, as indispensible, We are then able to appreciate the value of other auxiliary means, more-especially in the treatment of difficult and chronic cases. A certain Class of patients, suffering under disease the most prominent feature of which is high excitement and of recent dura tion, if early subjected to almost any place of safe keep ing and removed from all external sources of irritation, recover spontaneously from the efforts of the constitution; - other individuals again are constitutionally or habitually unobserving Of and indifferent to minor surrounding acci dents Of their position, so that if kept in the plainest and least expensive manner, as much may be done for them as if boundless cost was lavished upon them.
