Download or read book Sarnath written by Frederick M. Asher and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first analytical history of Sarnath, the place where the Buddha preached his first sermon and established the Buddhist monastic order. Sarnath has long been regarded as the place where the Buddha preached his first sermon and established the Buddhist monastic order. Excavations at Sarnath have yielded the foundations of temples and monastic dwellings, two Buddhist reliquary mounds (stupas), and some of the most important sculptures in the history of Indian art. This volume offers the first critical examination of the historic site. Frederick M. Asher provides a longue durée (long-term) analysis of Sarnath—including the plunder, excavation, and display of antiquities and the Archaeological Survey of India’s presentation—and considers what lies beyond the fenced-in excavated area. His analytical history of Sarnath’s architectural and sculptural remains contains a significant study of the site’s sculptures, their uneven production, and their global distribution. Asher also examines modern Sarnath, which is a living establishment replete with new temples and monasteries that constitute a Buddhist presence on the outskirts of Varanasi, the most sacred Hindu city.

Book The Bejewelled Buddha from India to Burma

Download or read book The Bejewelled Buddha from India to Burma written by Claudine Bautze-Picron and published by Sanctum Books. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a comprehensive study of 'The Bejewelled Buddha' considering stylistic as well as iconographic issues. A crucial moment in the Buddha's life seems to have been referred to through this image, namely, the sojourn on Mount Meru, where the Buddha sat on Indra's seat and taught all the gods. By occupying the seat of the king of the gods he was able to endorse the royal function of this deity; this becomes particularly evident in the late fifth century, and probably reflects the dramatic situation that the Buddhist community was confronted with, i.e. the political power essentially fostering the Hindu religion and social structure. Hence, the Buddha is depicted as a perfect and powerful ruler sitting at the top of the universe and showing himself adorned as a king; more than any human ruler, the Buddha rules over the universe. There is also another dimension that should never be neglected - as in any other Indian cult, worship of his image entailed offerings of various kinds, such as flower garlands or jewels, being made to the Buddha. The image of the Bejewelled Buddha thus included various constituents while at the same time it was used as the locus where different religious or political concepts found a way of expression. The result was the creation of an image of multi-layered significance which found its way into all Asian cultures.

Book Excavating Waves and Winds of ex change

Download or read book Excavating Waves and Winds of ex change written by Shahnaj Husne Jahan and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2006 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a chronological overview of maritime trade across the region of 'Bengal' to the first half of the 16th century AD, asking: which nodal points or ports were engaged in that trade? What were the exports and imports of the region? What were the media of exchange? What maritime vessels were employed and how were they constructed? How were ships navigated? Which maritime routes connected the ports of 'Bengal'? Who were the traders and what was their operative milieu? In the pursuit of answers to these questions, the work adopts the following methodology: extensive field-investigation of archaeological sites; study of artifacts indicative of maritime trade; synthesis of literature on epigraphic and numismatic findings, archaeological explorations and excavations; ethnographic field-level investigation on traditional maritime practices of contemporary communities; study of physiographic and geo-morphological features; and survey of available literary evidence pertaining to maritime trade.

Book Banaras Urban Forms and Cultural Histories

Download or read book Banaras Urban Forms and Cultural Histories written by Michael S. Dodson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a rich and surprising account of the recent history of the north Indian city of Banaras. Supplementing traditional accounts, which have focused upon the city’s religious imaginary, this volume brings together essays written by acknowledged experts in north Indian culture and history to examine the construction of diverse urban identities in, and after, the British colonial period. Drawing on fields such as archaeology, literature, history, and architecture, these accounts of Banaras understand the narratives which inscribe the city as having been forged substantially in the experiences of British rule. But while British rule transformed the city in many respects, the essays also emphasize the importance of Indian agency in these processes. The book also examines the essential ambiguity of modernization schemes in the city as well as the contingency of elements of religious narrative. The introduction, moreover, attempts to resituate Banaras into a wider tradition of urban studies in South Asia. The book will be of interest to not only scholars and students of north Indian culture and urban history, but also anyone looking to gain a deeper appreciation of this remarkable, and complex, city.
