Book The Coventry Motor Industry

Download or read book The Coventry Motor Industry written by David Thoms and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Coventry is synonymous with both the creation and relative decline of the British motor car industry. This volume utilises the extensive range of primary sources on the subject to explore the relationship between the car industry in its local context and the wider economic, social and political environment. It analyses the emergence and early dominance of Coventry’s motor manufacturers, the rise of volume production in the 1930s and the instabilities and renaissance of the post-war era. Specific chapters deal with the industry’s response to the demands created by the two world wars. A number of themes run throughout the book including the structure of the industry and the relationship between its various sectors, resource provision, management and labour relations, and the nature and response to market demand. The book also provides fascinating insights into the history of some of the most evocative marques in the car industry, including Daimler, Jaguar, Alvis, Siddeley, Standard and Rover.

  • Author : Robert Latham
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

  • ISBN : 140083161X
  • Pages : 381 pages

Download or read book Digital Formations written by Robert Latham and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-19 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer-centered networks and technologies are reshaping social relations and constituting new social domains on a global scale, from virtually borderless electronic markets and Internet-based large-scale conversations to worldwide open source software development communities, transnational corporate production systems, and the global knowledge-arenas associated with NGO networks. This book explores how such "digital formations" emerge from the ever-changing intersection of computer-centered technologies and the broad range of social contexts that underlie much of what happens in cyberspace. While viewing technologies fundamentally in social rather than technical terms, Digital Formations nonetheless emphasizes the importance of recognizing the specific technical capacities of digital technologies. Importantly, it identifies digital formations as a new area of study in the social sciences and in thinking about globalization. The ten chapters, by leading scholars, examine key social, political, and economic developments associated with these new configurations of organization, space, and interaction. They address the operation of digital formations and their implications for the development of longstanding institutions and for their wider contexts and fields, and they consider the political, economic, and other forces shaping those formations and how the formations, in turn, are shaping such forces. Following a conceptual introduction by the editors are chapters by Hayward Alker, Jonathan Bach and David Stark, Lars-Erik Cederman and Peter A. Kraus, Dieter Ernst, D. Linda Garcia, Doug Guthrie, Robert Latham, Warren Sack, Saskia Sassen, and Steven Weber.

Book How Educated English Speak English

Download or read book How Educated English Speak English written by Ingrid Wotschke and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do educated English speak English? Does it sound like Oxford or rather like Cockney? Why did traditional pronunciation habits and criteria of acceptability change radically during the 20th century, when even the BBC world service got a new sound? How to cope with the impacts of this change; what is the actual ‘standard’? Speech accent is not only a regional, but also a social marker. Ingrid Wotschke discusses educated pronunciation in its changing social contexts, supported by numerous speech samples and illustrations. Besides, she presents the alternative model of current Educated English English. This book is written for scholars and students of English and for anyone else interested in English language and culture.

Book Governing through Crime in South Africa

Download or read book Governing through Crime in South Africa written by Gail Super and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the historic transition to democracy in South Africa and its impact upon crime and punishment. It examines how the problem of crime has emerged as a major issue to be governed in post-apartheid South Africa. Having undergone a dramatic transition from authoritarianism to democracy, from a white minority to black majority government, South Africa provides rich material on the role that political authority, and challenges to it, play in the construction of crime and criminality. As such, the study is about the socio-cultural and political significance of crime and punishment in the context of a change of regime. The work uses the South African case study to examine a question of wider interest, namely the politics of punishment and race in neoliberalizing regimes. It provides interesting and illuminating empirical material to the broader debate on crime control in post-welfare/neoliberalizing/post transition polities.

Book Our Place in the Sun

Download or read book Our Place in the Sun written by Robert Wright and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-07-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penned during the transition of power from Fidel Castro to Raúl Castro, Our Place in the Sun explores the Canadian-Cuban relationship from 1959 to the present day. The essays in this volume reflect upon the past but also explore the internal issues and external forces that will continue to influence the Canada-Cuba association in the years to come. Many of this volume's contributors draw upon newly declassified sources and original interviews, providing unique insight into the historical, economic, and political realities affecting the Canada-Cuba connection. Featuring twelve original essays by a variety of scholars as well as a short memoir by former Canadian Ambassador to Cuba, Mark Entwistle, this important interdisciplinary collection calls into question past understandings of the Canadian-Cuban relationship. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Canadian and Cuban history of the last half-century, and the dynamics of North American politics more broadly.

Book Life On Air

  • Author : David Hendy
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2008-09-25
  • ISBN : 0191580201
  • Pages : 642 pages

Download or read book Life On Air written by David Hendy and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio Four has been described as 'the greatest broadcasting channel in the world', the 'heartbeat of the BBC', a cultural icon of Britishness, and the voice of Middle England. Defined by its rich mix, encompassing everything from journalism and drama to comedy, quizzes, and short-stories. Many of its programmes - such as Today ,The Archers, Woman's Hour, The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy, Gardeners' Question Time, and The Shipping Forecast - have been part of British life for decades. Others, less successful, have caused offence and prompted derision. Born as it was in the Swinging Sixties, Radio Four's central challenge has been to change with the times, while trying not to lose faith with those who see it as a standard-bearer for quality, authoritativeness, or simply 'old-fashioned' BBC values. In this first major behind-the-scenes account of the station's history, David Hendy - a former producer for Radio Four - draws on privileged access to the BBC's own archives and new interviews with key personnel to illuminate the arguments and controversies behind the creation of some of its most popular programmes. He reveals the station's struggle to justify itself in a television age, favouring clear branding and tightly-targeted audiences, with bitter disputes between the BBC and its fiercely loyal listeners. The story of these struggles is about more than the survival of one radio network: Radio Four has been a lightning rod for all sorts of wider social anxieties over the past forty years. A kaleidoscopic view of the changing nature of the BBC, the book provides a gripping insight into the very nature of British life and culture in the last decades of the twentieth century.
