Book Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences 1893 Vol 5

This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences, 1893, Vol. 5: A Yearly Report of the Progress of the General Sanitary Sciences Throughout the World Air (compressed and Rarefied). - After a large experience, W. Brugelmann Lfihas come to the conclusion that compressed air is a better remedial agent than oxygen. He considers it an emi uently successful factor in the healing art, and believes that it produces excellent results in the treatment of asthma, emphysema, bronchial catarrh, chlorosis, pleurisy, and valvular diseases of the heart. He reports two cases of chlorosis in which much benefit followed the compressed-air treatment, and he holds that, with deep breathing accomplished, every case of chlorosis will recover under proper guidance. Emphysema is most favorably affected by the treatment with rarefied air. The compressed air, which has been passed through a ask containing a solution of carbolic acid or eucalyptus or creolin, acts well upon chronic bronchial catarrh. The tough mucus adhering to the bronchioles is mechanically re moved, and the mucous membrane, brought again in contact with disinfected air, heals. If the sitting is followed by an inhalation of chloride of ammonium, the most favorable result is obtained. In pleuritic effusions, not of too long standing, the compressed air gradually increases the air-holding territory in the chest, and the adhesions are either torn asunder or so loosened that the breathing capacity is much extended. For valvular defects, not too far advanced, the intra-thoracic pressure secures a mechanical lessen ing of the hypertrophied heart-muscle, and this relieves the diffi culty. The author has often seen (edema disappear, and appetite, sleep, and the secretion of urine also improve, and he regards the pneumatic treatment as a very valuable aid in the treatment of valvular defects. With the exception of a slight faintness, no untoward effects are caused by compressed air. He believes, however, that the pneumatic treatment is contra-indicated in most cases of tuberculosis. He has certainly seen such patients, after a short use of compressed air, -deve10p metastatic foci in other parts of the lungs, - a danger which can never be foreseen in ordering the treatment. The hard breathing sends the tubercular particles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences, 1895, Vol. 4 Treatment is generally easy in respect to the existing lesions, but it is difficult to prevent the successive outbreaks. An oint ment of sulphur (about 1 drachm to 1 ounce - 4 grammes to 31 grammes) produced a cure of'existing lesions frequently in a few days, or at least a week or so, and the author has found no need for more heroic treatment. In many cases where the disease has been considered syphilitic iodide of potassium internally has been said to give excellent results, but it does not prevent further outbreaks, and a larger dose is required with each fresh crop. Dubreuilh believes, however, that he has been able to control to some extent the appearance of fresh lesions by the administration of ichthyol in doses of to gramme (4% to 7% grains) per diem, or, where ichthyol is badly supported, naphthol in -gramme (13 grains) doses after each meal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences, 1894, Vol. 5 Aceto-ortho-toluide. - This substance appears in the form of colorless needles, freely soluble in alcohol, ether, and hot water, but little soluble in cold water. Its melting-point is 107 C. (224.6 F.), and boiling-point 296 C. (564.8 F), being comparable in these respects to acetanilid and methylacetanilid, which it resembles chemically, being also, like these drugs, an active antipyretic. Experiments made by Barbarini on animals show that it is superior both to acetanilid and methylacetanilid in being less toxic. The dosage is not given. Agathin. - Ilberg has studied the antineuralgic and antirheumatic action of agathin. He began by giving 0.25 gramme (4 grains) three times a day and gradually increased the amount to 0.50 gramme (73/4 grains) five times in twenty-four hours. The usual dose was 0.50 gramme (73/4 grains) three times a day. His results were not encouraging. Of eight patients suffering from various neuralgias only one (a case of sciatic neuralgia) was cured on the fourteenth day. In acute articular and blennorrhagic rheumatism the results were also negative. In one case of chronic rheumatism the improvement was not more marked than if the patient had remained in bed for fifteen days. The untoward symptoms were frequent and varied. Most of the patients complained of cephalalgia and a feeling of heaviness. Insomnia, vomiting, diarrhoea, smarting pain during micturition, sensation of heat and intense thirst were also observed. The author believes that agathin should be rejected as an analgesic, and that its use may cause dangerous symptoms. L. Badt agrees with Ilberg as to the ill effects of the drug. Excerpt: ...to a person suffering from chronic malarial poison, without first arousing the action of the excreting glands. He believes the pathology of the disease to be like that of the vasomotor nerves supplying the capillary net-work of the kidneys, thus allowing dilatation of the capillaries within the Malpighian corpuscles to such an extent that the red blood-corpuscles, and other products ordinarily retained, pass through their attenuated walls and appear in the urine. He also thinks that this vasomotor paralysis is the only difference between the manifestations of chronic malarial poisoning attended by haematuria and those unattended by it. There should be a marked distinction made between cases of pernicious malarial fever, in which haematuria occurs as a result of the deteriorated state of the blood and a depressing influence of the malarial poison on the vital forces, and those cases in which quinine plays the part of an exciting cause. When the disease occurs independently of the action of quinine, it is due to the overflowing influence of the malarial poison on the sympathetic nerves, and when the system is so saturated with the poison that its influence alone brings about this vasomotor paralysis and attendant haematuria. Such cases, one would suppose, would be of a much graver type and less amenable to treatment than those cases which only occur after the addition of an exciting cause, as quinine. He does not find it diflicult to understand how quinine brings about the haematuria. Quinine is eliminated principally by the kidneys, but by all the other eliminating glands as well, and if it be administered to a person suffering from malarial poison when all the excreting glands--but especially those of the skin and intestinal canal--are...

This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences, 1888, Vol. 3: A Yearly Report of the Progress of the General Sanitary Sciences Throughout the World It is thus seen that there is a histological and physiological relationship between the epiblastic elements of the eye and the epi blastic tissues in the rest of the body, and between the mesoblastic tissues of the eye and all other mesoblastic tissues. The patho logical relationship is none the less intimate and exact; the cutaneous eruptions of strumous children, the eczemas, herpes, impetigos, etc., are concomitants of the phlyctenulae of the epithelial layers of the cornea. In ophthalmic herpes the corneal change is likewise epi blastie. Syphilis, on the other hand, is a disease of mesoblastic textures, and ocular syphilitic affections are found to be Of meso blastic origin. The notched, pegged, and stunted teeth of inherited syphilis are not faults of the epiblastic enamel, but of the mesoblastic dental papillae. Though epiblastic portions of the eye may become secondarily involved, the lesion begins in the mesoblastic structures. These and other analogies are valuable not only for diagnostic pur poses, but also for therapeutic uses. Certain drugs have a special affinity for particular tissue-elements, and this fact mav be utilized in prescription. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences, 1888, Vol. 5: A Yearly Report of the Progress of the General Sanitary Sciences Throughout the World A general summary of desirable climatic elements at health resorts is given in a lecture by Assmann before the Berlin Medical Society. The first property to be required is that the air shall be pure and, as far as possible, free from dust. This is found at the sea-shore, in forests and in the mountains. The air of mountains has an additional advantage in being almost free from bacterial germs of various sorts, non-pathogenic as well as pathogenic. Ozone should also be present in the air of health resorts. Unfortunately, however, our knowledge of atmospheric ozone is at present in a very uncertain state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences, 1889, Vol. 5: A Yearly Report of the Progress of the General Sanitary Sciences Throughout the World BY way of preface to the notes on General Therapeutics for the year 1888, I can but repeat what was said in beginning the same subject in the last volume of the annual, that the omission of reference to any important therapeutical papers found in the journals during the year is to be explained by the fact. That these articles have been given into the hands Of editor of other depart ments, and references to them should be sought for there. The number of journal articles handed me has been enormous - so great, in fact, that I have been obliged to condense remarks upon them as far as possible. In order to do this, and to avoid duplicating subject-matter, an arrangement has been made with the editor of the department of Experimental Therapeutics, by which all botan ical and chemical matters, including the description of drugs, etc., have been referred to him, and the department Of General Thera peutics confined strictly to the clinical application of medicines, including some remarks on food and water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences, 1894, Vol. 1: A Yearly Report of the Progress of the General Sanitary Sciences Throughout the World IT was hoped, judging from the fact that the majority of manuscripts forming the text of the annual had promptly come to hand, that the work could be placed before the profession much earlier this year than ever before. Unfortunately, all ex pectations in this direction were annihilated by the tardy arrival of a few papers, and it was only by dint of the greatest effort in both editorial and publishing departments that the seventh series could be made to appear as early as any preceding issue. To the members of the editorial staff, who by their promptness rendered possible even as good a showing as is made, the editor wishes to express his deep gratitude; the extent of the favor thus conferred upon him is far beyond their estimate. He regards it as without equal in lowering fever, its action being prompt and durable. Its only superior is the cold bath. A single dose of acetanilid in two hours reduced the temperature to 99° F. (37.2° C.), without collapse or strangury. Its good effects are especially observable in cephalalgia, rheumatism, etc. The best method of administration is in small doses, frequently repeated.
