Book Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the Frontotemporal Dementias

Download or read book Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the Frontotemporal Dementias written by Michael J. Strong and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years, there has been an increasing recognition that syndromes of frontotemporal dysfunction (FTD) are a common occurrence in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Such syndromes may be present in as many as 60% of patients with ALS. Conversely, the occurrence of motor neuron dysfunction in patients with clinically pure frontotemporal dementia is increasingly recognized. This suggests that to some extent there are overlapping syndromes in which both ALS and FTD occur within the same individual. This volume summarizes the advances in our understanding of these two disorders, as well as the potential relationship between the two. Key topics include advances in our ability to clinically describe the frontotemporal syndromes, preclinical detection, neuroimaging, and genetics. The exploding field of new markers in neuropathology is examined, as is the role of new genetic mutations in DNA/RNA transport systems. This book is the essential reference text for this topic, and will be of interest to neurologists and neurological trainees with a clinical or research interest in the FTDs or ALS, neuropsychologists, neuropathologists, and researchers.

Book Successful Aging

Download or read book Successful Aging written by Sheung-Tak Cheng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-26 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together state-of-the-art research on successful aging in Asian populations and highlights how the factors that contribute to successful aging differ from those in the West. It examines the differences between the Asian and Western contexts in which the aging process unfolds, including cultural values, lifestyles, physical environments and family structures. In addition, it examines the question of how to add quality to longer years of life. Specifically, it looks at ways to promote health, preserve cognition, maximize functioning with social support and maintain emotional well-being despite inevitable declines and losses. Compared to other parts of the world, Asia will age more quickly as a result of the rapid socioeconomic developments leading to rising longevity and historically low fertility rates in some countries. These demographic forces in vast populations such as China are expected to make Asia the main driver of global aging in the coming decades. As a result, researchers, professionals, policymakers, as well as the commercial sector, in both East and West, are increasingly interested in gaining a deeper understanding of aging in Asia.

Book Innovation and Culture in Public Services

Download or read book Innovation and Culture in Public Services written by Steven DeMello and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-25 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing trend toward innovation in public services, and the integration of public and private entities in their delivery. This book aims to improve the ability to innovate successfully in large-scale public/private endeavors. The authors develop an underpinning theory of innovation, and extend it to address key issues in public/private collaboration. As an example, they explore the subject of independent living for seniors and persons with disabilities across four countries – the US, UK, Norway and Japan. The resulting model provides a vehicle for all major stakeholders to better understand the dynamics of innovation, which will in turn offer the opportunity to improve performance and successful adoption. This book will provide useful insight for students of innovation, public service planning and delivery, and health and social services. In addition, the original opinion research on residents of the four countries will prove interesting for students of sociology and medical anthropology.

Book Trends and Factors in Japan s Long Term Care Insurance System

Download or read book Trends and Factors in Japan s Long Term Care Insurance System written by Pedro Olivares-Tirado and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ageing population poses a set of complex policy and dilemmas for social security systems, intensifying the concerns about rising expenditures in health care and long-term care for elderly. In this context, ageing societies has many valuable lessons to learn by studying Japan's experience dealing with its hyper-aged society and particularly from its strategies to ensure the financial sustainability of the Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) system. Based on an exhaustive literature review, and the results from six original researches on long-term care expenditures in Japan (LTCE) conducted during a doctoral program, the book provides a comprehensive view in analyzing trends and factors associated with increasing expenditures in the Long-Term Care Insurance system in Japan. The book address relevant topics such as; the main socio-demographic changes experienced by the Japanese society during the last three decades, predictors of the LTCE, measuring efficiency in nursing homes, the impact of the LTCI 2005-reform to contain expenditures, cost-effectiveness of the in-home and community based services and institutional LTCE in the last year of life. The book end with a discussion on futures challenges and strategies oriented to contribute with the sustainability of LTCI system in Japan.

Book Health Inequalities in Japan

Download or read book Health Inequalities in Japan written by Katsunori Kondō and published by Trans Pacific Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life expectancy of the Japanese is among the highest in the world, and their preventive system to avoid nursing care is attracting international attention. Based on a large sample of senior citizens, this quantitative ground-breaking study examines the ways in which preventive care is exercised in such areas as depression, oral health, insomnia, social isolation, and poor diet. The book focuses on the degree to which social inequalities and disparities are distributed among the elderly and it argues that a socio-epidemiological approach that emphasizes psycho-sociological variables deserves special attention. It analyzes the 'social determinants of health' and goes far beyond the normal purview of individual-focused health care to consider the long-term effects of education and investment in social capital for the health of older people. "...a valuable contribution and includes a helpful foreword by Ichiro Kawachi of the Harvard School of Public Health....it is one of the larger social epidemiological surveys to have been conducted concerning the precursors to well-being in later life, and it has gotten the attention of gerontologists, sociologists, and policy analysts in Japan." Journal of Japanese Studies, 38:2 (2012)

Book Practice Based Innovation Insights Applications and Policy Implications

Download or read book Practice Based Innovation Insights Applications and Policy Implications written by Helinä Melkas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes and analyses the new environment for innovation, it does this with an emphasis on yet uncharted regions within the field of practice-based innovation, coming up with guidelines for innovation policy measures needed in order to realise this. While it focuses on these policies it also takes into account multi-actor innovation processes, user-driven innovation, "related variety" and many other aspects; aspects such as, just to name a few: communicating creative processes and distributing practice-based innovation; then there is creativity itself, encompassing new fields of knowledge and expertise. The authors go on to describe value networks, showing how to make practice-based innovations, explaining innovation diffusion and absorptive capacity. The book presents new insights as well as the latest research related to the frequently used term "innovation". Definitions are put forward, giving, by way of examples, a detailed description of concepts we draw upon when using these. Innovation as a concept is constantly being subdivided into increasingly finer distinctions, which, in turn, determine the discourse. The book takes a close look at these, further taking into account the challenges as well as the opportunities inherent in developing practice-based innovation procedures and policies of global importance, never losing sight of advancing long-term effectiveness.

Book Food Safety Risk Intelligence and Benchmarking

Download or read book Food Safety Risk Intelligence and Benchmarking written by Sylvain Charlebois and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively argues for more future benchmarking between nations. Since the initial food safety benchmarking report was published in 2008, the sharing of data and protocols among nations has dramatically increased. It was intended to identify and evaluate common elements among global food safety systems. More specifically, benchmarking identifies those countries that employ comparatively best practices to assess, manage, and communicate the risks related to the safety of food and their respective food systems. The overarching intent of this benchmarking assessment, however, is to stimulate exchange and discussion on food safety performance among nations.

Book Japanese Tourism

  • Author : Carolin Funck
  • Publisher : Berghahn Books
  • Release : 2013-11-01
  • ISBN : 1782380760
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Japanese Tourism written by Carolin Funck and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing patterns of Japanese tourism and the views of the Japanese tourist since the Meiji Restoration, in 1868, are given an in-depth historical, geographical, economic and social analysis in this book. As well as providing a case study for the purpose of investigating the changing face of global tourism from the 19th to the 21st Century, this account of Japanese tourism explores both domestic social relations and international geographical, political and economic relations, especially in the northeast Asian context. Socio-cultural and geographical analysis form the research framework for the book, in three ways: first, there is an emphasis on scale as tourism phenomena and their implications are discussed both in a global context and at the national, regional and local levels; second, the discussion is informed by primary data sources such as censuses and surveys; and third, the incorporation of fieldwork and case studies adds concreteness to the overall picture of Japanese tourism. This book is a significant addition to an area of study currently under-represented in the literature.
