Using maps and numerous illustrations, This text describes the complex coastal and marine ecosystems of the region in detail. Discussion of development, resource use and ecologically sustainable management plans is also incorporated.

Book Wetland Carbon and Environmental Management

Download or read book Wetland Carbon and Environmental Management written by Ken W. Krauss and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores how the management of wetlands can influence carbon storage and fluxes. Wetlands are vital natural assets, including their ability to take-up atmospheric carbon and restrict subsequent carbon loss to facilitate long-term storage. They can be deliberately managed to provide a natural solution to mitigate climate change, as well as to help offset direct losses of wetlands from various land-use changes and natural drivers. Wetland Carbon and Environmental Management presents a collection of wetland research studies from around the world to demonstrate how environmental management can improve carbon sequestration while enhancing wetland health and function. Volume highlights include: Overview of carbon storage in the landscape Introduction to wetland management practices Comparisons of natural, managed, and converted wetlands Impact of wetland management on carbon storage or loss Techniques for scientific assessment of wetland carbon processes Case studies covering tropical, coastal, inland, and northern wetlands Primer for carbon offset trading programs and how wetlands might contribute The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.

Book Ecology of the Indonesian Seas

Download or read book Ecology of the Indonesian Seas written by Tomas Tomascik and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecology of the Indonesian Seas distills for the first time the information found in thousands of scholarly works relevant to an understanding of the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources in these islands—many of them available up to now only in Dutch, German or Indonesian. It is an invaluable tool for government planners, resource managers, ecologists, university students, scuba divers, and all those with an interest in the sea. The second volume discusses the origins, formation and distribution of various reef types in the Indonesian Archipelago, and provides new estimates on their extent. The second volume also provides a review of the ecology of Indonesian seagrass, mangrove and open-ocean ecosystems. The chapter on marine biodiversity focuses on a number of marine and coastal habitats and threatened marine organisms. The final two chapters discuss what recent effects the human race has had on marine resources, and what we can do to protect and preserve our marine and coastal zones for generations to come.

Book Mangroves of the South China Sea

Download or read book Mangroves of the South China Sea written by Sukristijono Sukardjo and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mangrove forests along the vast expanses of Indonesia's 95,180 kilometres of shoreline have long attracted man's curiosity for some time. These unique tidal forests have developed luxuriantly along the low-gradient, passive-margins of the wide continental shelf of Indonesia. No books concerning Indonesia's mangroves have been published previously by the Research Centre for Oceanography of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), despite the fact that these forests are areas of amazing beauty, exceptionally high biodiversity, and are the home and basis for the sociocultural and economic livelihoods of millions of Indonesians. This book highlights a particular problem regarding our 13 provinces that border with the South China Sea -- we have insufficient information about the vast coastal tracts of Indonesia's South China Sea region.

Book Traditions Redirecting Contemporary Indonesian Cultural Productions

Download or read book Traditions Redirecting Contemporary Indonesian Cultural Productions written by Jan van der Putten and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a conference held in October 2015 in connection with the Frankfurt Book Fair discussing developments that are considered important in contemporary Indonesian cultural productions. The first part of the book reflects on the traumatic experiences of the Indonesian nation caused by a failed coup on October 1, 1965. In more general theoretical terms, this topic connects to the field of memory studies, which, in recent decades, has made an academic comeback. The focus of the chapters in this section is how certain, often distressing, events are represented in narratives in a variety of media that are periodically renewed, changed, rehearsed, repeated, and performed, in order to become or stay part of the collective memory of a certain group of people. The second part of the book explores how forces of globalisation have impacted upon the local and, linguistically surprisingly, rather homogeneous cultural productions of Indonesia. The main strands of inquiry in this second section are topics of global trends in religion, responses to urban development, the impact of popular literary developments, and how traditions are revisited in order to come to terms with international cultural developments.
