Book excerpt: The Cawnpore Well, Lucknow Residency, and Delhi Ridge were sacred places within the British imagination of India. Sanctified by the colonial administration in commemoration of victory over the 'Sepoy Mutiny' of 1857, they were read as emblems of empire which embodied the central tenets of sacrifice, fortitude, and military prowess that underpinned Britain's imperial project. Since independence, however, these sites have been rededicated in honour of the 'First War of Independence' and are thus sacred to the memory of those who revolted against colonial rule, rather than those who saved it. The 1857 Indian Uprising and the Politics of Commemoration tells the story of these and other commemorative landscapes and uses them as prisms through which to view over 150 years of Indian history. Based on extensive archival research from India and Britain, Sebastian Raj Pender traces the ways in which commemoration responded to the demands of successive historical moments by shaping the events of 1857 from the perspective of the present. By telling the history of India through the transformation of mnemonic space, this study shows that remembering the past is always a political act.

Yet stories of how these artifacts were acquired often reveal unethical acts and troubling chains of possession, as well as unexpected instances of collaboration. For instance, archaeological excavation of Aboriginal graves was so prevalent in the late-eighteenth century that the government of Upper Canada legislated against it, although this did little to stop the practice. Many objects were collected by non-Native outsiders to preserve cultures perceived to be nearing extinction, while other objects were donated or sold by the same Native communities that later demanded their return. Book excerpt: Allama Mashraqi (Inayatullah Khan), sage of the East, was among few courageous leaders who bravely fought for the independence of India that resulted in the creation of Pakistan and India. Mashraqi's role prior to and after the partition of India is vital to the history of the Indian sub-continent. He was founder of Khaksar Tehreek (Movement) (founded in 1930) and Islam League (founded after independence). Mashraqi devoted his life to the uplift of the common man. He was not only an outstanding leader of the 20th century but also one of the greatest revolutionaries, visionaries, scholars, and mathematicians that emerged in that part of the world. Mashraqi's genius was proven when early on when he set unprecedented academic records at the Cambridge University (U.K.). There he completed four Triposes in five years with distinction. He was declared a Bachelor Scholar, Foundation Scholar and a Wrangler. It is believed that his academic records at this University are yet to be surpassed. He returned to India after his education and within a few years, in 1917, at age 29, he was appointed Under Secretary (Education Dept.) in British India. The British offered him Ambassadorship to Afghanistan in 1920 and the title of Sir in 1921. However, he declined both offers, and opted to represent and fight for the masses. Mashraqi was also among great speakers and writers, and his monumental work is "Tazkirah" ("Tazkira") an interpretation of the Holy Quran from a scientific perspective. Indeed, these credentials speak of a man born with astounding skills and exceptional abilities. Such personalities are born once in centuries. Mashraqi's followers and supporters ran in millions. He passed away in 1963 and well over 100,000 people came to attend his funeral and mourn his demise. With his death, an important chapter of Pakistan and India's history closed, as he played a vital role in both the pre- and post- independence eras. Though Mashraqi passed away, people will continue to be inspired by this legendary personality. May his soul rest in peace. By 1881, German speakers made up almost ten per cent of the province’s population and the German language was spoken in businesses, public schools, churches, and homes. German speakers in Ontario – children, parents, teachers, and religious groups – used their everyday practices and community institutions to claim a space for bilingualism and religious diversity within Canadian society. In The Boundaries of Ethnicity Benjamin Bryce considers what it meant to be German in Ontario between 1880 and 1930. He explores how the children of immigrants acquired and negotiated the German language and how religious communities relied on language to reinforce social networks. For the Germans who make up the core of this study, the distinction between insiders and outsiders was often unclear. Boundaries were crossed as often as they were respected. German ethnicity in this period was fluid, and increasingly interventionist government policies and the dynamics of generational change also shaped the boundaries of ethnicity. German speakers, together with immigrants from other countries and Canadians of different ethnic backgrounds, created a framework that defined relationships between the state, the public sphere, ethnic spaces, family, and religion in Canada that would persist through the twentieth century. The Boundaries of Ethnicity uncovers some of the origins of Canadian multiculturalism and government attempts to manage this diversity.
