Book Positron Annihilation in Chemistry

Download or read book Positron Annihilation in Chemistry written by Ole E. Mogensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only critical discussion available on the chemistry of the two "strange" light particles, the positron and positronium, with much space devoted to the excess electron. Positron annihilation allows the investigation of many unusual phenomena in the reaction kinetics of the positron, positronium, and excess electron, and in radiation chemistry and physics, while also providing important information on defects in solids.

Book Positron Annihilation Reactions in Condensed Materials

Download or read book Positron Annihilation Reactions in Condensed Materials written by JOHN D. MCGERVEY and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements were made of the time distribution of positron annihilations in aluminum, tin, copper, titanium, and zinc. All of the metals measured to date have shown a long lived component. This component, which is still unexplained, contains from 5 to 10% of the total counts, with A MEAN LIFE OF ABOUT 4 X 10 TO THE -10TH POWER SEC IN ALL THE METALS MEASURED. The presence of the long lived component is deduc small number of counts. Nevertheless these counts are significantly above the background level the counting rate in the peak was about 5000 times the background. Short mean lives in these metals were determined by subtracting the counts in the extrapolated long lived component and measuring the slope of t e remaining distribution. Data are being obtained on the angular distribution of annihilation radiation from alloys. The angular correlation method gives a direct expd from an extremely small number of counts. The angular correlation method gives a direct experimental determination of the Fermi energy of the conduction electrons. The major difficulty with the method is that in many alloys of interest a large number of positrons annihilate with core electrons rather than conduction electrons, and it is necessary to subtract this component in order to obtain the curve for conduction electron annihilation. Book excerpt: A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM ALEX GARLAND, STARRING NATALIE PORTMAN AND OSCAR ISAAC The Southern Reach Trilogy begins with Annihilation, the Nebula Award-winning novel that "reads as if Verne or Wellsian adventurers exploring a mysterious island had warped through into a Kafkaesque nightmare world" (Kim Stanley Robinson). Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide; the third expedition in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition. The group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain, record all observations of their surroundings and of one another, and, above all, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself. They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding—but it's the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.

Book Heteroepitaxy of Semiconductors

Download or read book Heteroepitaxy of Semiconductors written by John E. Ayers and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past ten years, heteroepitaxy has continued to increase in importance with the explosive growth of the electronics industry and the development of a myriad of heteroepitaxial devices for solid state lighting, green energy, displays, communications, and digital computing. Our ever-growing understanding of the basic physics and chemistry underlying heteroepitaxy, especially lattice relaxation and dislocation dynamic, has enabled an ever-increasing emphasis on metamorphic devices. To reflect this focus, two all-new chapters have been included in this new edition. One chapter addresses metamorphic buffer layers, and the other covers metamorphic devices. The remaining seven chapters have been revised extensively with new material on crystal symmetry and relationships, III-nitride materials, lattice relaxation physics and models, in-situ characterization, and reciprocal space maps.

Book Matter Dark Matter and Anti Matter

Download or read book Matter Dark Matter and Anti Matter written by Alain Mazure and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over ten years, the dark side of the universe has been headline news. Detailed studies of the rotation of spiral galaxies, and 'mirages' created by clusters of galaxies bending the light from very remote objects, have convinced astronomers of the presence of large quantities of dark (unseen) matter in the cosmos. The most striking fact is that they seem to compromise about 95% of the matter/energy content of the universe. As for ordinary matter, although we are immersed in a sea of dark particles, including primordial neutrinos and photons from fossil cosmological radiation, both we and our environment are made of ordinary, 'baryonic' matter. Authors Mazure and Le Brun present the inventory of matter, baryonic and exotic, and investigating the nature and fate of matter's twin, anti-matter. They show how technological progress has been a result of basic research, in tandem with the evolution of new ideas, and how the combined effect of these advances might help lift the cosmic veil.

Book Mesons And Baryons Systematization And Methods Of Analysis

Download or read book Mesons And Baryons Systematization And Methods Of Analysis written by A V Anisovich and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the investigation of the strongly interacting hadrons — to a quark model operating with effective color particles, constituent quarks, massive effective gluons and diquarks. The study of strong interactions based on effective constituent particles requires a solid ground of experimental data, which we now have at our disposal with the serious progress made in the investigation of hadrons, especially meson states. The present understanding of QCD applied to strong interactions can be distorted by prejudices. Therefore, the way followed by the quark model is to rely on the experiment and to restore the effective Hamiltonian on the basis of QCD on the one hand, and, on the other, of the spectral integral method.Baryon-baryon and antibaryon-baryon interactions are studied with the purpose of unambiguous applications of the written formulae to the interpretation of experimental data — to the observation of new meson and baryon resonances. The technique used is the spin-orbital momentum expansion of the amplitude. This method is our basic approach to the proper treatment of experimental data. The photon-induced reactions are also considered and the problem of form factors is discussed.
