Their own planet is burning out, and they have taken to outer space in a desperate search for a new home. Annie is the chosen explorer for an advance mission to Earth, the only planet within reach that can sustain them. During her scans, her craft malfunctions and plummets toward the surface, crashing at an abandoned farm. In a nearby small town seventeen-year-old Mark lingers at his bedroom window hoping for a glimpse of the girl next door. When a fiery object streaks across the nighttime sky, Mark gives up his voyeuristic vigil and hustles to the crash site. He finds Annie and is taken with her beauty and alluring ways. He befriends the fetching alien, and together they begin a struggle to assimilate her people into a new and unfamiliar world. Acceptance does not come easy. They encounter frightened citizens, hostile military forces, the media, and the President of the United States, all of whom treat the visitors and their advanced technology as a threatening alien invasion. The story delves into the unlikely pairing of a star-struck teenage boy and a beautiful and mesmerizing alien woman as they set out to overcome human prejudice and find acceptance for a culture of gentle and caring alien beings. Book excerpt: In this beautiful and haunting debut novel in verse, called “a tender piece on connectedness” in a starred review from Kirkus Reviews, a Japanese-American girl struggles with the loneliness of being caught between two worlds when the tragedy of 9/11 strikes an ocean away. Eleven-year-old Ema has always been of two worlds—her father’s Japanese heritage and her mother’s life in America. She’s spent summers in California for as long as she can remember, but this year she and her mother are staying with her grandparents in Japan as they await the arrival of Ema’s baby sibling. Her mother’s pregnancy has been tricky, putting everyone on edge, but Ema’s heart is singing—finally, there will be someone else who will understand what it’s like to belong and not belong at the same time. But Ema’s good spirits are muffled by her grandmother who is cold, tightfisted, and quick to reprimand her for the slightest infraction. Then, when their stay is extended and Ema must go to a new school, her worries of not belonging grow. And when the tragedy of 9/11 strikes, Ema, her parents, and the world watch as the twin towers fall… As her mother grieves for her country across the ocean—threatening the safety of her pregnancy—and her beloved grandfather falls ill, Ema feels more helpless and hopeless than ever. And yet, surrounded by tragedy, Ema sees for the first time the tender side of her grandmother, and the reason for the penny-pinching and sternness make sense—her grandmother has been preparing so they could all survive the worst. Dipping and soaring, Somewhere Among is the story of one girl’s search for identity, a sense of peace, and the discovery that hope can indeed rise from the ashes of disaster.

Praise for Annie's Ghosts "Annie's Ghosts is one of the most remarkable books I have ever read . . . From mental institutions to the Holocaust, from mothers and fathers to children and childhood, with its mysteries, sadness, and joy--this book is one emotional ride."--Bob Woodward, author of The War Within and State of Denial "Steve Luxenberg sleuths his family's hidden history with the skills of an investigative reporter, the instincts of a mystery writer, and the sympathy of a loving son. His rediscovery of one lost woman illuminates the shocking fate of thousands of Americans who disappeared just a generation ago."--Tony Horwitz, author of A Voyage Long and Strange and Confederates in the Attic "I started reading within minutes of picking up this book, and was instantly mesmerized. It's a riveting detective story, a moving family saga, an enlightening if heartbreaking chapter in the history of America's treatment of people born with what we now call special needs." -- Deborah Tannen, author of You Just Don't Understand and You're Wearing That "This is a memoir that pushes the journalistic envelope . . . Luxenberg has written a fascinating personal story as well as a report on our communal response to the mentally ill." -- Helen Epstein, author of Where She Came From and Children of the Holocaust "A wise, affecting new memoir of family secrets and posthumous absolution." -- The Washington Post "Annie's Ghosts will resonate for many, whether the chords have to do with family secrets, the Depression, memories of a thriving Detroit, the Holocaust's horrors, or the immigrant experience." -- The Detroit Free Press

Book excerpt: The first three books in Penny Grubb’s crime series about private investigator, Annie Raymond, have been re-edited and brought together in this fast-moving trilogy, Falling into Crime. - Like False Money (nominated for the John Creasy Crime Dagger) sees fledgling PI Annie Raymond arrive in Hull on the North-East coast of England to take a temporary job in a profession that has been her goal since childhood. Problems start with a boss who hadn’t wanted to hire her, a job she has no idea how to do, and a schoolgirl who is ready to blacken her name to save her own skin. Not only has Annie herself walked into a trap but her inexperience has also led a young girl into mortal danger. If she can’t find her way out of the tangle, it won’t be just her career that is over before it starts. - The Jawbone Gang sees Annie more settled – on the face of it. Her hard work has won her a place in a small agency where she develops her expertise and confidence. But her personal ambitions have stalled and as she plots to get herself back on track, a tangled case full of contradictions lands in her lap and threatens to sour her previously good relations with the local police. She used to be able to leave other people’s problems behind her when she closed the office door. But not this time. - The Doll Makers (winner of an international Crime Writers’ Association Dagger) sees Annie, now a seasoned investigator, working for a successful London-based agency. Not everything is going as well as it should, but it’s the tangle in her family life that’s at the forefront of Annie’s mind as she travels back to Argyll to see her father, unaware that she is stepping into a cataclysm that will change lives. Through it all she clings to her prized professionalism, until faced with a terrible choice; fake the evidence and wreck her prized professionalism or face the consequences to a loved one if she plays straight? Distracted, she takes her eye off the ball and misses vital evidence in a case she thought wasn’t her business. Someone is watching her closely, determined that evidence will never be delivered.

For the first time in a long time, a Price is flying without a safety net. Where do you go when you need to disappear into a crowd without worrying about attracting attention? An amusement park, of course. Some people would call Lowryland the amusement park. It's one of the largest in Florida, the keystone of the Lowry entertainment empire...but for Annie, it's a place to hide. She's just trying to keep her head down long enough to come up with a plan that will get her home without getting anyone killed. No small order when she's rooming with gorgons and sylphs, trying to placate frustrated ghosts, and rushing to get to work on time. Then the accidents begin. The discovery of a dead man brings Annie to the attention of the secret cabal of magic users running Lowryland from behind the scenes. They want the fire that sleeps in her fingers. They want her on their side. They want to help her--although their help, like everything else, comes with a price. No plan. Minimal backup. No way out. Annie's about to get a crash course in the reality behind the pretty facade. If she's lucky, she'll survive the experience.

Download or read book Saving Annie written by Angela Woywod and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This books shares the heartbreaks and struggles of a grandma and others who were involved in the rescue of a little girl from sexual abuse and neglect. Once the government agency "Child and Family Protective Services" (C&FPS) got involved, following the liberal laws of today to keep families together no matter what, the child was put through more misery and neglect, which dragged on for more than a year and a half before finally a decision on her future was made. This book will show how drug addiction destroys lives and how it can turn good people into useless, double-crossing, selfish and uncaring individuals. What made this tragedy even worse and frustrating was the fact that no one could help. Even the lawyers who were hired to get the child out of a bad environment, even though they tried when they first got involved, were hampered and restricted by the liberal laws that are on the books. They seemed to be more on Welfare's side than the client's who paid them for their services. It is hoped that the lawmakers of today will realize that some of our laws are too liberal and need to be changed to make this country safer for "everybody". These liberal laws were created shortly after WW II to protect people from discrimination that were different in culture, ethnicity, behaviorally or of physical or mental impairments, nowadays called the "Vulnerable". But these liberal laws do not help the "Vulnerable", on the contrary, they hamper their treatment, but they hurt the law-abiding, taxpaying citizens. This book may help people that find themselves in a similar situation where a child needs to be rescued from sexual abuse and neglect. Sexual abuse on children should be recognized as the big problem that it is, instead it is largely being ignored by the judicial system. An article in the New York Times on 10/5/2014 called "pedophilia" a disorder, not a crime, an opinion of one very liberal journalist. It may be a disorder, but it definitely is a crime as well and should be punished as such, to prevent pedophiles from acting out on their unnatural behaviors. 20% of American children, about 200,000 per year are victims of sexual molestation, many times perpetrated by family members or friends. These children may suffer for the rest of their lives. The American Psychiatric Association states that pedophiles have been shown to have lower IQs than the general population and are shorter in height. Many are left-handed and some have been sexually abused as children themselves. This automatically gets them included into the category of the "Vulnerable" and they enjoy special treatment by the judicial system and some of them go unpunished, to the detriment of the children.
