Book excerpt: It is 1942 and the dark shadows of World War II are creeping closer to the Chicago home front. Six-year- old Annie sits crouched in a closet during a blackout drill, terrified that the airplanes will cross the Atlantic and bomb her home! More than anything else she wants a life-like doll "who could be my friend on scary nights like this." That Christmas she receives a baby doll as magical as the butterfly charm that a young Marine gives her before shipping out to the Pacific. She soon learns that Sugar Plum (she later re-names her Chabo) is no ordinary doll. When she looks at Chabo she seems to say, "If you don't play with me, I won't be real." But dolls can't really talk (or can they?)! As Annie struggles with the "bad facts" of war - rationing, newsreels of war-torn cities, gold star flags in the windows on her block, bombings in her grandma's hometown in Italy - she turns to Chabo for comfort. She even develops "doll talk" so they can have a conversation. Chabo takes part in neighborhood war games with her and Annie even adopts a "refugee doll" so Chabo can be part of the war effort. Chabo is introduced to Annie's schoolmate friend, Emile, "a war-guest," whose mom is fighting in the French Resistance. But when Annie is stricken with rheumatic fever, Chabo becomes part of her very soul. When Chabo later suffers a near fatal accident, Annie is challenged to develop "the faith that moves mountains" her grandma talks about. Annie's Doll pulses with life on the Chicago home front between 1942-1945, its sacrifices, loss of loved ones, fear, and courage. From listening to President Roosevelt's fireside chats on the tombstone radio, to stoking the coal burning furnace on a frigid night, to tedious Spam meals, the tension of D-Day, the street celebrations of V-E and V-J Day, it provides "time travel" to a bygone era The book also celebrates the creativity of play and the importance of imagination in the life of a little girl growing up in extraordinary times with an "extraordinary" doll. Annie's doll, Chabo, has a central role to the very end when she forms part of the wedding party of Annie's Royal Air Force pen pal and her favorite teacher. And when Emile returns to France, Annie cries and asks Chabo to promise never to leave her. Chabo has learned a lot in her short life as Annie's doll. But does she have enough "magic" to make a promise in her own little voice?

Book Annie s Doll World War II on the Home Front

Download or read book Annie s Doll World War II on the Home Front written by Mary Ann Eiler and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six-year -old Annie is living a nightmare no one should have to endure alone. World War II is raging in Europe and in the Pacific, and though Annie is far from the front lines, she feels the horror of war on the home front: beloved neighbors are killed in action, her family hears of relatives suffering in Europe, and she sees war’s violence and destruction in weekly newsreels. Strict rationing and blackouts challenge her own daily life. Added to this, when Annie contracts rheumatic fever, she has “her own war to win” if she is to survive! But she has a constant companion – the chubby baby doll, a 1942 Christmas gift, --who helps her “fight” to get well and survive the heartaches of war. Everyone loves her doll, even her school-mate, Emile, a “war guest from France,” and her aviator pen-pal in the Royal Air Force. Inspired by her own recollections of World War II and the personal accounts of war veterans, Eiler has written a sobering reminder of the sacrifices of war as a tribute to The Greatest Generation, intended for children studying the war and adults alike. The doll opens a gateway to discussing difficult topics with children like hope and perseverance in the face of illness and crisis while the novel’s focus on magical play will interest doll and toy enthusiasts. In the novel’s “magical ending” Eiler offers a touch of whimsy. The war is over. The celebrations have ended. Not to be “outdone,” Annie’s doll makes her a promise the reader will hold dear – who said dolls can’t talk?

Download or read book Davy Crockett s Riproarious Shemales and Sentimental Sisters written by Michael Lofaro and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2001-04-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary feats of Davy Crockett, who could tree a ghost, ride his thirty-seven-foot-long alligator up Niagara Falls, and drink up the Mississippi River, are common knowledge to devotees of this nineteenth-century comic superhero. But what may come as a surprise to many is that the legendary frontiersman also served as the fictional narrator of a collection of outrageous tall tales about women in the same Crocket Almanacs in which he "recorded" his own adventures. Conceived as a marketing device by nineteenth-century publishers hoping to gain a share of the lucrative almanac market, such stories made these slim volumes the best-selling and longest-running series of comic almanacs published in the United States before the Civil War. Booking back at them now, the Crocket Almanacs offer a true "fun house mirror" view of the culture of antebellum America.

Book Child s War

  • Publisher : The History Press
  • Release : 2011-11-08
  • ISBN : 0752475908
  • Pages : 95 pages

Download or read book Child s War written by Mike Brown and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Second World War broke out in September 1939, it came as no surprise to the children of Germany: the Nazis had been preparing them for a war ever since they had come to power in 1933. To British children it was an altogether different matter. Children all over Britain were deeply affected by the war: many were separated from their parents by evacuation or bereavement; all had to 'make do and mend' with clothes and toys; and some even died while contributing to the war effort at home. In this moving and often amusing account, Mike Brown describes what life was like on the Home Front during the war from a child's point of view. His fully illustrated narrative includes details of evacuation, rationing, coping with gas masks and air raids, entertainment and the important - and often dangerous - roles of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. This photographic history pays tribute to the generation of girls and boys who grew up under the shadow of the Second World War.

  • Pages : 231 pages

Download or read book Air written by Peter Adey and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outside of yoga class, we don’t pay too much attention to the air we take in every day. Long one of the essential elements to life on earth—from the atmospheric composition that gave life to the coal-forming forests some three hundred million years ago to the air that fuels our most important technologies today—we think little of its incredible properties. In this innovative cultural and scientific history, Peter Adey takes stock of the great ocean of air that surrounds us, exploring our attempts to understand, engineer, make sense of, and find meaning in it. Adey examines how humans have managed and manipulated air as a natural resource and, in doing so, have been taken to the limits of survival, brought to high-altitude mountain peaks, subterranean worlds, and the troughs of new moral depths. Going beyond how vital air has been to our philosophical, scientific, and technological pursuits, he also reveals the way that the artistic and literary imagination has been lifted through air and how, in air, cultures have learned to express and inspire each other. Combining established figures such as Joseph Priestley, John Scott Haldane, and Marie Curie with unlikely individuals from painting, literature, and poetry, this richly illustrated book unlocks new perspectives into the science and culture of this pervasive but unnoticed substance.
