Book Advanced Study in the History of Modern India 1707 1813

Download or read book Advanced Study in the History of Modern India 1707 1813 written by Jaswant Lal Mehta and published by Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical and critical account of the political history of early modern India from 1707 to 1813. The narrative shatters the contention of contemporary European writers that it was 'the dark age' of Indian history, characterised by 'political anarchy and misgovernment', until the British brought it under their sway. The main thesis of the author is that the period was marked by two distinct phases; the first phase, which lasted from 1707 to 1760, saw the rapid disintegration of the Mughal power and its replacement by the Maratha hegemony. Meanwhile, the English traders turned colonialists, after consolidating their hold along the Indian seacoasts and conquest of 'Carnatic' and Bengal, challenged the Maratha hegemony. The second phase of developments was thus marked by the struggle for supremacy between these two powers. The author makes use of contemporary English and Marathi sources and the intensive researches of modern historians to portray a compact picture of their findings in the form of a text book for the benefit of the degree students. Historical facts are reinterpreted through illuminating expositions, refreshing characterisation of historic personalities, and objective assessment of events and movements. Together with maps, a select bibliography, glossary and an elaborate index, the volume makes a rich contribution to the advancement of modern historical literature.

Book Geographies of Privilege

Download or read book Geographies of Privilege written by France Winddance Twine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are social inequalities experienced, reproduced and challenged in local, global and transnational spaces? What role does the control of space play in distribution of crucial resources and forms of capital (housing, education, pleasure, leisure, social relationships)? The case studies in Geographies of Privilege demonstrate how power operates and is activated within local, national, and global networks. Twine and Gardener have put together a collection that analyzes how the centrality of spaces (domestic, institutional, leisure, educational) are central to the production, maintenance and transformation of inequalities. The collected readings show how power--in the form of economic, social, symbolic, and cultural capital--is employed and experienced. The volume’s contributors take the reader to diverse sites, including brothels, blues clubs, dance clubs, elite schools, detention centers, advocacy organizations, and public sidewalks in Canada, Italy, Spain, United Arab Emirates, Mozambique, South Africa, and the United States. Geographies of Privilege is the perfect teaching tool for courses on social problems, race, class and gender in Geography, Sociology and Anthropology.

Book India s Shakespeare Translation Interpretation and Performance

Download or read book India s Shakespeare Translation Interpretation and Performance written by Poonam Trivedi and published by Pearson Education India. This book was released on 2005 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s Shakespeare: Translation, Interpretation and Performance is ideal for English literature, performance, translation studies. This collection of essays examines the diverse aspects of Shakespeare's interaction with India, since two hundred years ago when the British first introduced him here. While the study of Shakespeare was an imperial imposition, the performance of Shakespeare was not. Shakespeare, translated and adapted on the commercial stage during the late nineteenth century was widely successful; and remains to this day, the most published and performed western author in India. The important role Shakespeare has played in allowing cultures to speak with each other forms the center of this volume with contributions examining presence of Shakespeare in both colonial and post-colonial India. The essays discuss the several contexts in which Shakespeare was read, taught, translated, performed, and absorbed into the cultural fabric of India. The introduction details the history of this induction, its shifts and developments and its corresponding critical discourse in India and the west. This collection of essays, emerging from first hand experience, is presented from a variety of critical positions, performative, textual, historicist, feminist and post-colonialist, as befits the range of the subject.

Book The Use of Force in International Law

Download or read book The Use of Force in International Law written by Tom Ruys and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 961 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international law on the use of force is one of the oldest branches of international law. It is an area twinned with the emergence of international law as a concept in itself, and which sees law and politics collide. The number of armed conflicts is equal only to the number of methodological approaches used to describe them. Many violent encounters are well known. The Kosovo Crisis in 1999 and the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 spring easily to the minds of most scholars and academics, and gain extensive coverage in this text. Other conflicts, including the Belgian operation in Stanleyville, and the Ethiopian Intervention in Somalia, are often overlooked to our peril. Ruys and Corten's expert-written text compares over sixty different instances of the use of cross border force since the adoption of the UN Charter in 1945, from all out warfare to hostile encounters between individual units, targeted killings, and hostage rescue operations, to ask a complex question. How much authority does the power of precedent really have in the law of the use of force?
