But at 71 years of age I found myself in a house full of books only one of which I had not read. I am terrribly addicted to reading so, in desperation, I started "Anne of Green Gables". It is a marvelous book with a main character I wish I could meet every day in real life. Again to feed my addiction I bought the "Anne of Green Gables" series. Each book was a delight and I soon forgot that they were "girls" books. Maud created a character we all need in our life. She turns the mundane magical and believable. Reading them all in nearly a continous setting makes Anne "wearying" to quote Marilla since unbounded child-like wonder is hard to maintain. I wish I had read these books decades ago so Anne could have helped me through some less than happy times.

Sacrificing her own desires for the well-being of her new family, Anne comes to learn that family means more than blood. Matthew Cuthbert is painfully shy and devoted to his sister, Marilla. The Cuthberts run their family farm at Green Gables, with neither spouses nor children to distract them. So when the Cuthberts decide to adopt a child to help them on the farm, Matthew never imagines that he will forge an inseparable bond with her, and that she would have such a profound effect on him. Anne of Green Gables tells the story of little Anne Shirley as she adapts to a new way of life. Set in the fictional community of Avonlea, Anne learns to navigate her new responsibilities on the farm with her adopted parents Mathew and Marilla. In addition to her farm life, Anne quickly makes friends at school, having no trouble expressing her ambitions and wild imagination in the classroom. With a big personality and an eagerness to please, Anne’s exuberant spirit livens up the community at Green Gables. Making life-long friendships with her closest pal Diana Barry, and instant hatred of Gilbert Blythe, who teases Anne about her wild red hair, Anne’s life in Avonlea is everything she ever hoped it would be. With a professionally type-set manuscript and an eye-catching new cover, this edition of Anne of Green Gables is both modern and readable.

Montgomery’s classic novel is as memorable as its heroine. When Anne Shirley arrives at Green Gables, she surprises everyone: first of all, she’s a girl, even though Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew specifically asked for an orphan boy to help around the farm. And second of all, she’s not just any girl: she has bright red hair, a wild imagination, and can talk a mile a minute. But she also has a sweet disposition and quick wit, and Anne (with an “e” of course—it’s so much more distinguished!) soon finds her place in Avonlea, making a friend in her neighbor Diana Barry and attending the local school, where she spurns the advances of the popular and handsome Gilbert Blythe when he commits the ultimate sin of making fun of her hair. Anne has a temper as fiery as her hair and a knack for finding trouble, and she also has a big heart and a positive attitude that affects everyone she meets. This classic and beloved story makes a wonderful gift and keepsake.

Anne is mistakenly given to Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew to be adopted. The Cuthberts had originally wanted to adopt a boy to help Matthew on their farm, Green Gables, but Anne wins the love of quiet, thoughtful Matthew as he is taking her home from the train station, and she is allowed to stay. With time, she is able to work through Marilla's rough shell and become very dear to her. The first book of a series about Anne's life, Anne of Green Gables relates the various parts of Anne's precocious personality and the mishaps and triumphs that come of it, at home, at school, and in her relationships. Besides the Cuthberts, the two people who have the biggest impact on her life are her best friend Diana Barry and close enemy Gilbert Blythe.Born in 1874 in the town of Clifton on Prince Edward Island, Canada, L.
