Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since early settlers landed on Maryland's shores, agriculture has played a vital role in shaping the colony and state. Founded in 1650 in central Maryland, Anne Arundel County is home to Annapolis, the state's capital. Spanning 416 square miles and boasting 533 miles of Chesapeake Bay coastline, the county was once dotted with pastoral farming villages where tobacco was the major cash crop. In time, farmers diversified and adapted their craft and products to meet the demands of an ever-changing world. By the mid-1900s, truck crops became a leading agricultural commodity as farmers began to raise livestock and other produce to supplement their income. The county's proximity to Washington, DC, and Baltimore created job opportunities that led to suburban expansion, and by the late 20th century, tobacco--once the backbone of Maryland agriculture--was replaced by other crops. Images of America: Farming in Anne Arundel County chronicles the county's rich agricultural history and transformation through images collected from farm families and historical organizations.

Book excerpt: A few minutes past five o'clock on the drizzly Sunday evening of January 29, 1956, more than 1,200 men and women were preparing to return home following an oyster roast sponsored by the church many had attended that morning, in Brooklyn, Maryland. When workers spotted smoke drifting downward from the ceiling, no one panicked. World War II veterans and war workers, they were accustomed to dealing with this sort of thing themselves. No one called the fire department. This is an account of the next three minutes, and what followed. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: The actual settlement of the Province of Maryland in 1634 was undertaken by Leonard Calvert, Lord Baltimore's second son, and the group of 200 adventurers who accompanied him on the Ark and the Dove. In addition to a succinct history of the Calvert family and the area in which they flourished in England, this work describes the life and times of the 200 passengers, their part in the founding and settlement of the colony, and the development of the feudal manorial system. In addition to a succinct history of the Calvert family and the milieu in which they flourished in England, The Flowering of the Maryland Palatinate describes the lives and times of the 200 adventurers who participated in the original expedition ot Maryland, their part in the founding and settlement of the colony, and the development of colonial Maryland's distinctive manorial system. The bulk of this volume, of course, consists of biographical and genealogical sketches of the 200 adventurers, each developed in meticulous detail from surviving documents by the famous Maryland genealogist, Harry Wright Newman. From contemporary court records, letters, and miscellaneous papers, Mr. Newman has wrought a definitive history of these early Marylanders and has accomplished, single-handedly, for the passengers of the Ark and the Dove, what has taken a legion of researchers to do for the passengers of the Mayflower

Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2021 Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Nonfiction "Talusan sails past the conventions of trans and immigrant memoirs." --The New York Times Book Review "A ball of light hurled into the dark undertow of migration and survival." --Ocean Vuong, author of On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous A singular, beautifully written coming-of-age memoir of a Filipino boy with albinism whose story travels from an immigrant childhood to Harvard to a gender transition and illuminates the illusions of race, disability, and gender Fairest is a memoir about a precocious boy with albinism, a "sun child" from a rural Philippine village, who would grow up to become a woman in America. Coping with the strain of parental neglect and the elusive promise of U.S. citizenship, Talusan found childhood comfort from her devoted grandmother, a grounding force as she was treated by others with special preference or public curiosity. As an immigrant to the United States, Talusan came to be perceived as white. An academic scholarship to Harvard provided access to elite circles of privilege but required Talusan to navigate through the complex spheres of race, class, sexuality, and her place within the gay community. She emerged as an artist and an activist questioning the boundaries of gender. Talusan realized she did not want to be confined to a prescribed role as a man, and transitioned to become a woman, despite the risk of losing a man she deeply loved. Throughout her journey, Talusan shares poignant and powerful episodes of desirability and love that will remind readers of works such as Call Me By Your Name and Giovanni's Room. Her evocative reflections will shift our own perceptions of love, identity, gender, and the fairness of life.

Download or read book Missing Middle Housing written by Daniel G. Parolek and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, there is a tremendous mismatch between the available housing stock in the US and the housing options that people want and need. The post-WWII, auto-centric, single-family-development model no longer meets the needs of residents. Urban areas in the US are experiencing dramatically shifting household and cultural demographics and a growing demand for walkable urban living. Missing Middle Housing, a term coined by Daniel Parolek, describes the walkable, desirable, yet attainable housing that many people across the country are struggling to find. Missing Middle Housing types—such as duplexes, fourplexes, and bungalow courts—can provide options along a spectrum of affordability. In Missing Middle Housing, Parolek, an architect and urban designer, illustrates the power of these housing types to meet today’s diverse housing needs. With the benefit of beautiful full-color graphics, Parolek goes into depth about the benefits and qualities of Missing Middle Housing. The book demonstrates why more developers should be building Missing Middle Housing and defines the barriers cities need to remove to enable it to be built. Case studies of built projects show what is possible, from the Prairie Queen Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska to the Sonoma Wildfire Cottages, in California. A chapter from urban scholar Arthur C. Nelson uses data analysis to highlight the urgency to deliver Missing Middle Housing. Parolek proves that density is too blunt of an instrument to effectively regulate for twenty-first-century housing needs. Complete industries and systems will have to be rethought to help deliver the broad range of Missing Middle Housing needed to meet the demand, as this book shows. Whether you are a planner, architect, builder, or city leader, Missing Middle Housing will help you think differently about how to address housing needs for today’s communities.

Download or read book Chemically Dependent Anonymous written by and published by Cda Communications. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemically Dependent Anonymous' (CDA) book by the same name outlines their history, philosophical underpinnings, & the program for people who are chemically dependent. CDA is a support group that deals with the disease of addiction & the possibility that an addict will transfer his or her chemical dependency from one substance to another. CDA has based its program on the programs proven successful by Alcoholics Anonymous for more than half a century. They have adapted AA's twelve steps & twelve traditions, changing them only so they refer to chemical dependency as a whole, rather than just alcohol abuse. The book CHEMICALLY DEPENDENT ANONYMOUS contains personal stories by 23 courageous recovering men & women who have been willing to share their personal stories about their addiction, their attempts at recovery & their success in combatting many varieties of substance abuse. Their stories have been kept as nearly as possible in their own words. Only those who have been there can so eloquently explain how they have been able to rebuild their lives. These CDA members want to give hope to others that they too may find freedom from their addictions through CDA's own time tested program of recovery outlined in this book.
