Wyoming Territory was a cattleman's commonwealth and there were relatively few sheep, but not so few that they can be ignored. The press had little enough to say about sheep. A report from Rawlins, March told that many cattle were dying but that sheep were suffering little. 61 On the other hand, a special dispatch to the Denver Republican from Butte, Montana, February 21, told of heavy losses among sheep as well as cattle. The Denver Republican Special correspondent who went to investigate Montana stories reported that sheep suffered even worse than cattle.63 Charlie Worland, the earliest sheepman in the Big Horn Basin, lost most of his flock.64 There were few sheep in Crook county where the heaviest cattle losses occurred. The assessors listed sheep for the Territory in 1887 in comparison with only for the year before.65 Without figures for the number of sheep trailed in in 1887 a generalization about winter losses is impossible. There is no evidence suggesting that horses suffered much in 1886-87. Horses could paw through the snow for feed and could move from water to fresh range and back with relative ease. We had approached within about 50 feet of our camp when Quan trel, looking backward, called out, Look at that son of a gun with the pitchfork. One fellow was standing over the one who had been knocked out with the bucket of water and was making passes at him with the fork, but when he made a stab at him missed his 'mark and drove the fork into the ground so deep. That it required some effort to pull it out, and when he did recover it, went over backwards and lost the fork in the creek. Then crawling upon his hands and knees removed the wreck of the bucket from the fel low's head and taking it in his lap began moaning and croon ing over him. Perceiving that the war was over, we started to return to our camp and were within a few steps of it when the old house fell in with a crash like heaven and earth had come together. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Wyoming, Vol. 21: January, 1949 The following account was written by John James Fox, 1866-1944, who came to Wyoming Territory from England in the spring of 1885. He remained in Wyoming until 1887, when he returned to England. In the early '90's he came to the United States a second time, and settled on a citrus ranch in San Diego County, California. Later he spent some time in Guadalajara, Mexico, before returning again to England. For a time he managed a small sheep ranch in Udimore, Sussex, but America called him a third time, and this time (1904) he settled in California for good. John Fox became a prominent farmer and stock raiser. He served on the Horticultural Commission of Napa County for three years, was appraiser for the Federal Land Bank for eleven years, and was horticultural editor for various farm papers. He wrote a Manual of Rural' Appraisement which was published by the Pacific Rural Press, San Fran cisco, 1923.
