The great susceptibility Of monkeys to tubercular disease is well known. In their wild state, these animals appear not to suffer at all, but their mortality in captivity is notorious. Captain S. Flower, Director of the Zoological Gardens at Cairo, tells me that, whereas formerly he lost numbers Of monkeys from tuberculosis, he has only had one death from the disease in the last three years. The deaths ceased when he moved the cages back so as to be out of reach of visitors, who are now unable to handle or feed the animals, and who can no longer spit into the cages, a favourite amusement of the human being when he interests himself in his Simian relatives. Dr. Plimmer, who most kindly provided me with information on this subject, has succeeded in greatly reducing the death-rate from tuberculosis amongst the large number of monkeys in the zoo in Regent's Park by a search for and rejection Of infected animals and a thorough cleaning up of the cages; after which a rigid rejection Of all arrivals that showed the least trace Of tuberculosis prevented the introduction Of fresh cases.
