This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the Church of St. Mary, Shaw-Cum-Donnington, in the County of Berks Since the above note was written a remarkable discovery has been made in the church-yard at Shaw, of a very large Ancient British Cinerary or Sepulchral Urn, containing ashes and burnt bones. It was found in removing the ground on the north side of the church near the post and rail fence, at a depth of about four feet, but unfortunately broken in removal. A description of this Urn will be given in the zud Vol. Of the Field Club Transactions, now in the press. In immediate proximity to the spot where the vessel was discovered, the writer has since picked up several good specimens of flint flakes and scrapers. A number of pieces of Roman pottery and glass are lying about in different parts of the church-yard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Author : Roger Scruton
  • Publisher : Atlantic Books
  • Release : 2014-02-01
  • ISBN : 1782395040
  • Pages : 179 pages

Download or read book Our Church written by Roger Scruton and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most people in England today, the church is simply the empty building at the end of the road, visited for the first time, if at all, when dead. It offers its sacraments to a population that lives without rites of passage, and which regards the National Health Service rather than the National Church as its true spiritual guardian. Here, Scruton argues that the Anglican Church is the forlorn trustee of an architectural and artistic inheritance that remains one of the treasures of European civilization. He contends that it is a still point in the centre of English culture and that its defining texts, the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer are the sources from which much of our national identity derives. At once an elegy to a vanishing world and a clarion call to recognize Anglicanism's continuing relevance, Our Church is a graceful and persuasive book.

Book The Ancient British Church

Download or read book The Ancient British Church written by John Pryce and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient British Church: A Historical Essay The following Essay having been adjudged to be the best on 'The Ancient British Church' of the Essays submitted for competition at the National Eisteddfod of 1876, I have not felt myself at liberty to introduce alterations except in the way of phrase and illustration, together with the addition of some of the Notes and the latter part of Chapter V. The necessity of keeping closely in my treatment of the subject to the lines marked out by the Committee in their programme, is my apology for the disproportionate length at which I have discussed some points, and for the consequent want of symmetry which I feel pervades the whole Essay.
