Book Who Can Take the Lord s Supper

Download or read book Who Can Take the Lord s Supper written by Dallas W. Vandiver and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism and the Lord's Supper are likely more basic for the church than you think. When Jesus inaugurated the new covenant by his death on the cross, he established baptism as the new covenant sign of entry and the Lord's Supper as the new covenant sign of participation. These signs identify believers with Christ and his people. They are integral to the existence, membership, and discipline of the local church. In answer to the question "Who can take the Lord's Supper?" this book catalogues four major positions in the broad Baptist tradition. While proponents of various views have appealed to the necessity of circumcision for participation in Passover as evidence for their position, none have adequately worked out the covenantal relationships between circumcision and baptism or Passover and the Lord's Supper. By contrast to Reformed pedobaptist covenantal theology and in distinction from Baptist covenantal theology and dispensational theologies, this book develops the relation of these covenantal signs from a progressive-covenantal perspective. It presents an unprecedented comparison of the continuities and discontinuities between the covenant signs across the storyline of Scripture to demonstrate a biblical-theological principle that the sign of entry should precede the sign of participation.

Book excerpt: Ministry Book of the Year--The Gospel Coalition 2017 Book Awards The critical missing element in Christian mentoring today: the congregation "Bringing up future leaders isn't just the job of the pastor but of the whole congregation. This is an urgently needed book in churches today." --R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Young, emerging leaders of the church, many of whom have gone through leadership training and traditional mentorship programs, still too often find themselves unprepared for the realities of ministry. Many leave the ministry altogether, overwhelmed. Phil Newton reveals a critical gap: single-source mentorship is incomplete. Mentoring must involve the congregation, not just senior pastors, in order to bring forth mature, resilient leaders prepared for all that ministry entails. The solid, practical solutions in The Mentoring Church offer churches of any size both the vision for mentoring future leaders and a workable template to follow. With insightful consideration of theological, historical, and contemporary training models for pastor/church partnerships, Newton is a reliable guide to developing a church culture that equips fully prepared leaders.

Book The Emergence of Religious Toleration in Eighteenth Century New England

Download or read book The Emergence of Religious Toleration in Eighteenth Century New England written by Jeffrey A. Waldrop and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the life and work of the Reverend John Callender (1706-1748) within the context of the emergence of religious toleration in New England in the later seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, a relatively recent endeavor in light of the well-worn theme of persecution in colonial American religious history. New England Puritanism was the culmination of different shades of transatlantic puritan piety, and it was the Puritan’s pious adherence to the Covenant model that compelled them to punish dissenters such as Quakers and Baptists. Eventually, a number of factors contributed to the decline of persecution, and the subsequent emergence of toleration. For the Baptists, toleration was first realized in 1718, when Elisha Callender was ordained pastor of the First Baptist Church of Boston by Congregationalist Cotton Mather. John Callender, Elisha Callender’s nephew, benefited from Puritan and Baptist influences, and his life and work serves as one example of the nascent religious understanding between Baptists and Congregationalists during this specific period. Callender’s efforts are demonstrated through his pastoral ministry in Rhode Island and other parts of New England, through his relationships with notable Congregationalists, and through his writings. Callender’s publications contributed to the history of the colony of Rhode Island, and provided source material for the work of notable Baptist historian, Isaac Backus, in his own struggle for religious liberty a generation later.

Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between the conversion theology popularized by Charles Grandison Finney and the theological drift of Baptists in the South from Calvinism to Arminianism. It begins with a survey of the historical evidence of the Calvinistic roots of Baptists in the South by way of a brief overview of Baptist origins in England, followed by an overview of Baptist life in America, including the founding of the first Baptist church in the colonies in the seventeenth century, developments in Baptist soteriology in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and concluding with trends that emerged in the twentieth century. Next, an overview of the traditional or Calvinistic Baptist view of conversion that was the majority view prior to the mid-nineteenth century, which provides a brief contrast of the two predominant views held by evangelicals, Arminianism and Calvinism, and demonstrates how uncommon the views of conversion popularized in the mid to late nineteenth century had been previously. The remainder of the book focuses on the conversion theology of Finney and the opposition from his contemporaries by analyzing Finney's rejection of reformed orthodoxy and the use of the means of grace, his views that revival and conversion are of human rather than divine origin, his departure from the Edwardsean theological tradition he had inherited, his Pelagian and semi-Pelagian tendencies, his conflation of backsliders with false professors, and the fact that he propagates and popularizes existing error rather than inventing new a theology or methodology. Next is a survey of the effects of Finney's theology on Southern Baptists and evangelicalism as a whole under the following headings: Finney's polemical rewriting of history and its impact on subsequent generations, the effects of revivalism, and the specific effects of Finney's theology on Baptists, the understanding of God and His role in conversion, and church practice. The book wraps up with a summary of the lingering effects of Finney's Pelagian theology on the church today, which concludes that Finney's influence on Baptists in the South was part of the theological shift from their Calvinistic roots to Arminianism as the dominant theology, and ends with practical and pastoral applications for the church today.
