Book The Annals of Applied Biology 1919 20 Vol 6

Download or read book The Annals of Applied Biology 1919 20 Vol 6 written by E. E. Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annals of Applied Biology, 1919-20, Vol. 6: The Official Organ of the Association of Economic Biologists In the light Of evidence afforded by growth curves based on dry weight measurements which were available in the literature, growth and development within the limits of hereditary potentialities were treated as fundamentally matters Of physiological pre-determination. The general expression covering growth was described as the Compound Interest Law Of Development. The Operation Of this law may be subject to a number of secondary modifications. A few fundamental principles are necessary for the study of growth and development. These are conspicuous by their absence in existing text-books of plant physiology, which excel in the assemblage Of interesting curiosities and of uncorrelated details. The phenomena Of normal growth seem to call for further study and analysis and for the application of mathematical treatment. Even a clear grasp of the general conception Of the compound interest law Of development at once greatly simplifies the handling of problems Of physiological pre determination and Of growth. One is able to formulate approximately the magnitude of effects that will be Observed as the result of causes operating continuously or for a short time in relation to the stage Of development at which the cause operates and the effect is desired. Book Exploitation of Fungi

    Book Details:
  • Author : G. D. Robson
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2007-05-24

Download or read book Exploitation of Fungi written by G. D. Robson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-24 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fungi are a highly diverse kingdom of eukaryotic microbes. Recent advances in molecular genetics, together with the release of whole genome sequences of an increasing number of fungi, are facilitating their exploitation and commercialisation. Fungi have the ability to secrete large quantities of proteins of commercial value, and their complex secondary metabolic pathways produce a diverse range of bioactive compounds which have had a major impact in the pharmaceuticals market. In addition, the fungi themselves are increasingly being developed as alternatives to conventional chemically-based pest control strategies, and as bioremediation agents capable of transforming pollutants in the soil environment. With chapters written by international experts, this volume highlights current and future biological, biochemical, and molecular exploitation of the fungi in biotechnology. It will have broad appeal, not only to mycologists and microbiologists, but also to biomedical scientists, biotechnologists, environmental and molecular scientists, plant pathologists and geneticists.

Book The Soil Seed Banks of North West Europe

Download or read book The Soil Seed Banks of North West Europe written by Ken Thompson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buried viable seed banks are a fundamental aspect of seed plant biology. They play a key role in the conservation and restoration of plant communities and the response of plants to changing land use and climate. There is almost no area of plant ecology in which seed banks are not implicated. Despite several recent reviews of the ecology of seed banks, there has previously been no single source of data on seed persistence in individual species. This volume, which compiles the available data from the nineteenth century up to the end of 1993, provides this source for the 1189 members of the northwest European flora. The text describes the criteria for inclusion of data and discusses seed classification systems, the relative representation of different habitats, methods and taxa, and challenges for future research. Includes PC disc with database in searchable format.
