Book excerpt: The Cotswold Olimpick Games are a unique and beloved tradition that dates back to the early 17th century. These games, which consist of a variety of athletic competitions and other festivities, take place every year in Chipping Campden, a picturesque village in the Cotswold Hills of England. This book is a facsimile edition of the original 1636 edition of 'Annalia Dubrensia', a collection of poems, songs, and memoirs celebrating the games and their founder, Captain Robert Dover. Edited by AB Grosart, this edition includes detailed notes on the history and culture of the Cotswolds. Download or read book The Beginning of Boxing in Britain 1300 1700 written by Arly Allen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have discussed boxing in the ancient world, but this is the first to describe how boxing was reborn in the modern world. Modern boxing began in the Middle Ages in England as a criminal activity. It then became a sport supported by the kings and aristocracy. Later it was again outlawed and only in the 20th century has it become a sport popular around the world. This book describes how modern boxing began in England as an outgrowth of the native English sense of fair play. It demonstrates that boxing was the common man's alternative to the sword duel of honor, and argues that boxing and fair play helped Englishmen avoid the revolutions common to France, Italy and Germany during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. English enthusiasm for boxing largely drove out the pistol and sword duels from English society. And although boxing remains a brutal sport, it has made England one of the safest countries in the world. It also examines how the rituals of boxing developed: the meaning of the parade to the ring; the meaning of the ring itself; why only two men fight at one time; why the fighters shake hands before each fight; why a boxing match is called a prizefight; and why a knock-down does not end the bout. Its sources include material from medieval manuscripts, and its notes and bibliography are extensive.
Download or read book British Sporting Literature and Culture in the Long Eighteenth Century written by Sharon Harrow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport as it is largely understood today was invented during the long eighteenth century when the modern rules of sport were codified; sport emerged as a business, a spectacle, and a performance; and gaming organized itself around sporting culture. Examining the underexplored intersection of sport, literature, and culture, this collection situates sport within multiple contexts, including religion, labor, leisure time, politics, nationalism, gender, play, and science. A poetics, literature, and culture of sport swelled during the era, influencing artists such as John Collett and writers including Lord Byron, Jonathan Swift, and Henry Fielding. This volume brings together literary scholars and historians of sport to demonstrate the ubiquity of sport to eighteenth-century life, the variety of literary and cultural representations of sporting experiences, and the evolution of sport from rural pastimes to organized, regular events of national and international importance. Each essay offers in-depth readings of both material practices and representations of sport as they relate to, among other subjects, recreational sports, the Cotswold games, clothing, women archers, tennis, celebrity athletes, and the theatricality of boxing. Taken together, the essays in this collection offer valuable multiple perspectives on reading sport during the century when sport became modern.
