Yet these techniques rely on a powerful compositional element that often goes overlooked. Groundwork provides the first in-depth examination of the complex relationship between figure and ground in Renaissance painting. “Ground” can refer to the preparation of a work’s surface, the fictive floor or plane, or the background on which figuration occurs. In laying the material foundation, artists perform groundwork, opening the ground as a zone that can precede, penetrate, or fracture the figure. David Young Kim looks at the work of Gentile da Fabriano, Giovanni Bellini, Giovanni Battista Moroni, and Caravaggio, reconstructing each painter’s methods to demonstrate the intricacies involved in laying ground layers whose translucency and polychromy permeate the surface. Carolyn Yerkes answers that question in a fresh investigation into the status of architectural drawing in the 16th and 17th centuries. Drawing after Architecture: Renaissance Drawings and their Reception investigates the status of architectural drawing after the invention of print, and explores a vast group of 16th and 17th century manuscripts and collections of drawings that are each part of a larger network of copies. Made by French and Italian draftsmen who studied Roman monuments, the drawings contain information about the buildings - buildings that include the most important ancient and modern works, the Pantheon and Saint Peter's - that is not known from any other sources. But the information that the drawings preserve is only part of their value: the drawings also show how that information was recorded, transferred, and analysed by other draftsmen. In the 16th century, survey drawing was the key mechanism through which the material past was understood, and many 16th and 17th century drawings after ancient architecture are extant. Ultimately, this book pursues the nature of architectural evidence, in that it asks how Renaissance architects used images to explore structures, to create biographies, and to write history.

In Vitruvius: Writing the Body of Architecture, Indra Kagis McEwen argued that Vitruvius’s first-century BC treatise De architectura was informed by imperial ideology, giving architecture a role in the imperial Roman project of world rule. In her sequel, All the King’s Horses, McEwen focuses on the early Renaissance reception of Vitruvius’s thought beginning with Petrarch—a political reception preoccupied with legitimating existing power structures. During this “age of princes” various signori took over Italian towns and cities, displacing independent communes and their avowed ideal of the common good. In turn, architects, taking up Vitruvius’s mantle, designed for these princes with the intent of making their power manifest—and celebrating “the rule of one.” Through meticulous descriptions of the work of architects and artists from Leon Battista Alberti to Leonardo, McEwen explains how architecture became an instrument of control in the early Italian Renaissance. She shows how architectural magnificence supported claims to power, a phenomenon best displayed in one of the era’s most prominent monumental themes: the equestrian statue of a prince, in which the horse became an emanation of the will of the rider, its strength the expression of his strength.

The specificities of each region, and, in modern times, politics and nationalistic approaches, have reinforced the tendency to treat them separately, preventing scholars from questioning whether the visual output could be considered as an expression of a shared history. The comparative and interdisciplinary framework of this volume provides a holistic view of the visual culture of these regions by addressing issues of transmission and appropriation, as well as notions of cross-cultural contact, while putting on the global map of art history the eclectic artistic production of Eastern Europe.
