Download or read book Chandernagore written by Sailendra Nath Sen and published by Primus Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chandernagore, a former French possession near Kolkata, has experienced several changes in fortune, moving from being the hub of revolutionary activities against British imperialists to being subjugated by the French. Utilizing diverse original sources from India and France, as well as the private papers of Debendra Nath Dash, a key figure in Chandernagore politics, this book examines the unfolding events in the struggle of the people of Chandernagore against French colonial rule. It situates the events within the broader context of other French settlements--Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam--with Pondicherry being pivotal to French imperialism in India. The struggle against French tutelage was fought in a non-violent manner through a process of negotiations that led to a peaceful referendum in 1949, the first of its kind in India. This book is a ground-breaking research work on Chandernagore--a town on which there is still little published material available--and provides important scholarship in the field of the history of West Bengal.

Download or read book The Politics of Imperial Memory in France 1850 1900 written by Christina B. Carroll and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By highlighting the connections between domestic political struggles and overseas imperial structures, The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850–1900 explains how and why French Republicans embraced colonial conquest as a central part of their political platform. Christina B. Carroll explores the meaning and value of empire in late-nineteenth-century France, arguing that ongoing disputes about the French state's political organization intersected with racialized beliefs about European superiority over colonial others in French imperial thought. For much of this period, French writers and politicians did not always differentiate between continental and colonial empire. By employing a range of sources—from newspapers and pamphlets to textbooks and novels—Carroll demonstrates that the memory of older continental imperial models shaped French understandings of, and justifications for, their new colonial empire. She shows that the slow identification of the two types of empire emerged due to a politicized campaign led by colonial advocates who sought to defend overseas expansion against their opponents. This new model of colonial empire was shaped by a complicated set of influences, including political conflict, the legacy of both Napoleons, international competition, racial science, and French experiences in the colonies. The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850–1900 skillfully weaves together knowledge from its wide-ranging source base to articulate how the meaning and history of empire became deeply intertwined with the meaning and history of the French nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Republican passions demonstrates the crucial role of family and friendship networks in the creation of the French Third Republic. Based on the family archives of Léon Laurent-Pichat, journalist, Deputy and Life Senator, this study paints a rich picture of republican intimacy, sociability and political activity during the Second Empire and early Third Republic. It explores republican friendships and family connections as men and women worked together for the cause. In republican circles, as the book illustrates, the intimate and political realms were not separate but deeply intertwined and interdependent.
