Book excerpt: Description: Manuscript copy of the travel journal of Ann Powell (later Clarke), 11 May-June 1789, and letters related to the journal and the Powell family. The bulk of the volume is written in an unknown hand, but included are notes and annotations by Eliza Susan Quincy. The first half of the volume is entitled "Letters from Miss Powell, during a tour to Niagara and Detroit. 1789." The journal describes Ann's trip from Montreal to Detroit with her brother William Dummer Powell, sister-in-law Anne (Murray) Powell, and their family. William D. Powell was a loyalist who had just been appointed first judge of the Court of Common Pleas in the Hesse District, Province of Quebec. Ann wrote about the trip down the St. Lawrence River; the crossing of Lake Ontario; Niagara Falls; a council of the Six Nations, including the dress and manners of the American Indians; the crossing of Lake Erie; and her arrival at Detroit and social activities there. Among the people she describes are Captain Richard Duncan, his wife Mary (Wright) Duncan, Joseph Brant, Lord Edward Fitzgerald, Mohawk chief Captain David Hill, and Seneca chief Red Jacket. Also includes a memoir of Ann Powell Clarke. The second half of the volume is entitled "Letters and incidents relative to an accidental acquaintance with the family of Miss Powell 1833 to 1844." Included are copies, in the same hand as the previous section, of Eliza Susan Quincy's correspondence with Magdalena Johnston (later Jenners), Charlotte Bleecker (Powell) Ridout, and others about the journal, Quincy's acquaintance with Powell family members, and the life of William D. Powell's son Jeremiah. Attached are original letters from Rebecca Amory Lowell and William Minot about the manuscript.
