Book Anglicisms Neologisms and Dynamic French

Download or read book Anglicisms Neologisms and Dynamic French written by Michael D. Picone and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996-10-18 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive study of Anglicisms in the context of accelerated neological activity in Contemporary Metropolitan French not only provides detailed documentation and description of a fascinating topic, but opens up new vistas on issues of general linguistic interest: the effects of technology on language, the analyticity-syntheticity controversy, the lexical contribution to language vitality, the study of compound word formation, the interplay between cultural and linguistic affectivity. By investigating the dynamics of borrowing within the larger framework of general neological productivity and by bringing to bear cognitive and pragmatic considerations, a much-needed fresh approach to the entire question of Anglicisms takes shape. All pertinent phenomena regarding Anglicisms in French — a topic which continues to command the attention of language commentators and defenders in France and elsewhere — are explored: integral borrowings, semantic calques, structural calques, the generation of pseudo-Anglicisms and hybrids, graphological and phonological phenomena. In each case, the phenomenon is investigated in the proper context of its interaction with other pertinent neological, phonological and sociocultural developments. These include general changes in French compound word formation, modified derivational dynamics, the microsystem of pseudo-Classical morphology, historic phonological instabilities, the pressure for more synthetic types of lexical production in relation to the needs of technology and society. Rather than adhering rigidly to any single theoretical model, there is an attempt to set up a dialog between differing models in order to arrive at a multidimensional view of the phenomena investigated.

Book A Journey through Knowledge

Download or read book A Journey through Knowledge written by Loredana Frăţilă and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Journey through Knowledge: Festschrift in Honour of Hortensia Pârlog is a collection of articles dedicated to one of the best known Romanian university teachers and linguists, both in her home country and well beyond its borders. The heterogenous material (both in terms of the range of issues tackled and in terms of the approaches adopted by the authors) in the three sections of the volume finds itself a common denominator in the idea of “traveling” and “journey”, around which they are organized. In the first section, Traveling across Identities and Emotions, Pia Brînzeu touches upon some identity issues, in dealing with a form of subversion in Coz Shakespeare, by Marin Sorescu; Jaques Ramel argues against the opinion that Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream was written to be performed as an epithalamium during wedding ceremonies; Adolphe Haberer brings to the fore the non-hero features of the main character in Virginia Woolf’s Jacob’s Room; Liliane Louvel writes about the mirror in literary texts, insisting on its potential to send back graphic reflections onto these texts; and Maurizio Gotti discusses definitional criteria, i.e., the principles according to which a term should be defined. In section two, Traveling in Time and Space, Slávka Tomaščíková speaks about the status, functions and characteristics of media narrative discourse during the last decade; Aleksandra Kedzierska follows and characterizes various types of journeys in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, highlighting their significance for celebration; Alberto Lázaro traces the changes that medieval stories, abundant in sexual references and instances of adultery, have suffered to meet the publication requirements during Franco’s regime in Spain; Stephen Tapscott focuses on the relationship between contemporary American poets’ lyric and previously written works (especially Modernist); while Fernando Galván examines a number of literary texts centering on cities that have been dreamed of or imagined by various writers, to illustrate decay, deconstruction and regeneration. The third section, Traveling between Languages and Cultures, opens with Smiljana Komar’s account of the translation of some frequent English discourse markers into Slovene and continues with Loredana Pungă’s illustration of the issue of loss and gain in translation. Irma Taavitsainen and Päivi Pahta highlight the functions of the English politeness marker please, pliis in Finnish, and investigate whether and how its meanings have changed when it has been adopted into the host language. Lachlan Mackenzie’s contribution rounds off the volume with some suggestions on how recent changes in the English language should be taken into consideration when teachers of English evaluate the linguistic performance of their students.

  • Author : Edward Tivnan
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

Download or read book Moral Imagination written by Edward Tivnan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1996-07-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to the most controversial moral questions of our lives - abortion, euthanasia, suicide, capital punishment, racial justice, and affirmative action - there is a right and wrong, but no one owns the truth. This book guides us through the opposing arguments on these profound issues, opening up ways for our pluralistic society to think about them. How does one make up one's mind about the difficult, yet everyday, inescapable social and moral problems we all face? The public debate often degenerates into name-calling and even violence. Conservatives and liberals alike act as if there is only one way to think. In a format that is accessible, anecdotal, and concrete, Edward Tivnan lays out the best arguments on all sides of these visceral topics. He explores the most sophisticated thinking from philosophy, theology, medicine, and the law, as well as examples from the emotional complexities of everyday life, and carefully mediates between opposing ideals - not to lead us to a position of convenience, but to help us toward independent decisions of conviction. Tivnan's analysis, therefore, does not dictate answers, but calls for an effort to understand and respect why people believe so strongly in their own values. Only by facing up to our differences of opinion can we make progress, expand our moral imagination, and achieve a decent and respectful society. In concluding chapters, Tivnan describes the peculiar nature of American democracy, invented by men who knew that freedom would breed conflicting values and expected that such differences would secure the nation's future as a republican democracy. The first premise of a decent, free society, Tivnan writes, is tolerance; "the first sparks of tolerance and decency reside in the imagination - what I want to call the moral imagination." He concludes that expanding our moral imagination "will cleanse debate of hatred and moral arrogance."
