Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawyer Mitch Galichin finds himself a fugitive after he blows the whistle on a human trafficking ring operated by the vory-v-zakone in Leningrad. His life in peril, Mitch navigates the landscapes of Eastern Canada, drawing readers into the vivid places and intriguing characters he encounters along the way. The story oscillates between the Canadian backdrop and the stark contrasts of Siberia, where Mitch’s young daughter, Anja, and his ex-wife reside. Adding to the complexity, Mitch’s father, Sergei, endures the harsh realities of a Siberian labour camp. In this narrative, appearances are deceiving, and the truth is layered. Haunted by the ghosts of his past, Mitch perceives threats at every turn. As time progresses, his fear gradually diminishes, giving way to a struggle to reclaim his true identity. Complicating matters, a new romance emerges, bringing with it the haunting realities of human trafficking. Faced with this dilemma, Mitch grapples with the choice to intervene or turn away. This novel transcends the grim realities of human trafficking, balancing the gravity with moments of levity. Set against the backdrop of the Soviet Union’s disintegration, it delivers a potent social message woven into a compelling storyline. While it follows Josie Mounsey’s previous novel, The Weak Against the Strong, this gripping narrative stands on its own as a suspenseful and emotionally charged drama.

Book excerpt: An expansive yet intimate story of desire, artistic ambition, and fidelity, set in the glamorous literary and film circles of 1950s Italy In July of 1953, at a glittering party thrown by Truman Capote in Portofino, Italy, Tennessee Williams and his longtime lover Frank Merlo meet Anja Blomgren, a mysterious young Swedish beauty and aspiring actress. Their encounter will go on to alter all of their lives. Ten years later, Frank revisits the tempestuous events of that fateful summer from his deathbed in Manhattan, where he waits anxiously for Tennessee to visit him one final time. Anja, now legendary film icon Anja Bloom, lives as a recluse in present-day America, until a young man connected to the events of 1953 lures her reluctantly back into the spotlight after he discovers she possesses the only copy of an unknown play--Tennessee's last. What keeps two people together and what breaks them apart? Can we save someone else if we can't save ourselves? With emotional clarity and grace, Leading Men seamlessly weaves fact and fiction to navigate the tensions between public figures and their private lives. In an ultimately heartbreaking story about the burdens of fame and the complex negotiations of life in the shadows of greatness, Castellani creates an unforgettable leading lady in Anja Bloom and reveals the hidden machinery of one of the great literary love stories of the twentieth-century.

  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2017-08-24
  • ISBN : 0813589940
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book Textual Silence written by Jessica Lang and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are thousands of books that represent the Holocaust, but can, and should, the act of reading these works convey the events of genocide to those who did not experience it? In Textual Silence, literary scholar Jessica Lang asserts that language itself is a barrier between the author and the reader in Holocaust texts—and that this barrier is not a lack of substance, but a defining characteristic of the genre. Holocaust texts, which encompass works as diverse as memoirs, novels, poems, and diaries, are traditionally characterized by silences the authors place throughout the text, both deliberately and unconsciously. While a reader may have the desire and will to comprehend the Holocaust, the presence of “textual silence” is a force that removes the experience of genocide from the reader’s analysis and imaginative recourse. Lang defines silences as omissions that take many forms, including the use of italics and quotation marks, ellipses and blank pages in poetry, and the presence of unreliable narrators in fiction. While this limits the reader’s ability to read in any conventional sense, these silences are not flaws. They are instead a critical presence that forces readers to acknowledge how words and meaning can diverge in the face of events as unimaginable as those of the Holocaust.

Book High As the Waters Rise

Download or read book High As the Waters Rise written by Anja Kampmann and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "gorgeously written" National Book Award finalist is a dazzling, heart-rending story of an oil rig worker whose closest friend goes missing, plunging him into isolation and forcing him to confront his past (NPR, One of the Best Books of the Year). One night aboard an oil drilling platform in the Atlantic, Waclaw returns to his cabin to find that his bunkmate and companion, Mátyás, has gone missing. A search of the rig confirms his fear that Mátyás has fallen into the sea. Grief-stricken, he embarks on an epic emotional and physical journey that takes him to Morocco, to Budapest and Mátyás's hometown in Hungary, to Malta, Italy, and finally to the mining town of his childhood in Germany. Waclaw's encounters along the way with other lost and yearning souls—Mátyás's angry, grieving half-sister; lonely rig workers on shore leave; a truck driver who watches the world change from his driver's seat—bring us closer to his origins while also revealing the problems of a globalized economy dependent on waning natural resources. High as the Waters Rise is a stirring exploration of male intimacy, the nature of memory and grief, and the cost of freedom—the story of a man who stands at the margins of a society from which he has profited little, though its functioning depends on his labor.

Book The Russian Military Intervention in Syria

Download or read book The Russian Military Intervention in Syria written by Ohannes Geukjian and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the demise of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has tried to restore its lost status, prestige, and influence in the global political arena. At the same time, internal political challenges and international events – such as the Arab Spring and the colour revolutions in former Soviet republics – have threatened the security and the national interests of the country. Taking these challenges and opportunities into account, The Russian Military Intervention in Syria examines Russia’s assertive foreign policy and its attempts to protect its geostrategic interests in the Middle East and former Soviet territory. Ohannes Geukjian analyzes the history of Russian military presence in the Middle East and the country’s growing frustration with American and Western policy, revealing the objectives behind Russia’s use of military power – namely, to maintain its regional influence in Eurasia and to enhance its status in the world. Geukjian provides a detailed examination of the Geneva and Astana peace processes, the geopolitical objectives of Turkey, Iran, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, and how disagreements between Russia and the United States over issues of regime change, global security, and armaments have negative implications for international conflict management. The Russian Military Intervention in Syria is an authoritative overview, based on a wide range of new and updated sources, providing a fresh interpretation and analysis of Russia’s foreign policy goals and Russian diplomacy in handling the Syrian conflict.
