Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both carefully researched and engaging, this small book invites the reader into the story of a remarkable fourth-century Cappadocian woman, St. Macrina the Younger, who met challenges that may seem familiar today. Surrounded by polarizing political conflict, in an empire divided by growing disparities between rich and poor, Macrina lived through earthquakes and disastrous droughts. She saw people displaced by war and severe weather, pushed into the ranks of the hungry and houseless. She suffered breast cancer and lost loved ones in tragic, unexpected deaths. Her response was nothing less audacious, fascinating, and inspiring than a commitment to know, reveal, and reflect God in her actions, and to make her home a microcosm of gospel life--an inclusive community of love, equality, simplicity, labor, caring, and generosity. The story begins with Macrina's parents among Christian refugees hiding in the hills during the Great Persecution. Restored to their family estates after the Edict of Milan, they raised two of the Cappadocian Fathers and two other saints. In this book, we follow their eldest child, Macrina, as her lived faith changes the course of her own life, and gradually and steadily permeates and remakes her family and community.

Book excerpt: NOTE: This is a "clean read" edition of "Anissa's Redemption" (i.e., this version has no profanity and minimally described intimacy). Due to war themes, the book is not recommended for readers under 16. Anissa Toma fled war-torn Syria after narrowly escaping the massacre of her Christian family by Islamists. Fortunate enough to rebuild her shattered life in New York City, she soon captured the interest of two powerful men: Michael, an activist working to establish Antioch, the first Mideast Christian state, and Julien, her college professor and one of the city's wealthiest bachelors. As Anissa's saga continues, the refugee-turned-rising-star must navigate between Michael and Julien, while trying to help her surviving relatives and other vulnerable Christians in Syria. As she gets closer to both men in a complex and evolving love triangle, can she unlock Julien's traumatic childhood to open up his heart? Or will Julien find greater solace from his nightmares and other demons in the sessions with his intriguing therapist? What will Michael do for Antioch and for Anissa? How far will each person go to help Anissa's remaining family and other persecuted Christians at risk in Syria? Find out in this stunning sequel to "Anissa of Syria" (which is summarized in a detailed synopsis for those who wish to read this book as a standalone).

Download or read book Basil the Great Faith Mission and Diplomacy in the Shaping of Christian Doctrine written by Nicu Dumitrașcu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarded as one of the three hierarchs or pillars of orthodoxy along with Gregory of Nazianzus and John Chrysostom, Basil is a key figure in the formative process of Christianity in the fourth century. While his role in establishing Trinitarian terminology, as well as his function in shaping monasticism, his social thought and even his contribution to the evolution of liturgical forms have been the focus of research for many years, there are few studies which centre on his political thought. Basil played a major role in the political and religious life between Cappadocia and Armenia and was a key figure in the tumultuous relationship between Church and State in Late Antiquity. He was a great religious leader and a gifted diplomat, and developed a ’special relationship’ with Emperor Valens and other high imperial officials.

She kept the heartbeat of love inside her mind, reminding her that soon she would be reunited with her soul mate. Things did not go as she had hoped. A big dream was born inside this new-age woman. She will break the mold of where and what women were doing in her timeline. She now accepts the challenge of building an Andrew School for children and especially orphans. Her children would for sure not have slave-posted ears. Her slave earring is gone, but memories would sometimes surface. She ponders that maybe she will be only an old school maid. Her sandals were divided; she gave Jacob the right one, and is now unhappy with her decision. She decides she would never separate them again. Now, the sandal, with God's help, begins an important maze journey for Jacob, Nathanael, Philip, and his sister, Mariamne, along with Mugface and his family. With ensuing international turmoil in the latter end of the maze, Lee Chin meets the Zhang Family. Speculus the gladiator has now gotten into her human desire! Was her last hug with Dylan leaving the mark of a son on her heart? Will this child face his destiny with no parents or country? Will everyone reach the end and be one big family? My novel was written in volumes, bringing my dream to life! Hopefully someday as a movie and enjoyment for all ages.

Download or read book Tracing Your Baltic Scandinavian Eastern European Middle Eastern Ancestry Online written by Anne Hart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-06-06 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you online and ready for global smart card and database genealogy for virtual travelers? Here's how to search family history for nations bordering the Baltic Sea, the Balkans countries, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. The nations listed in this guide (all faiths) include Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Armenia, Assyria, Greece, Lebanon, Syria, and many other lands in the Middle East, the Balkans-Croatia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Eastern Europe-Hungary, and more. Collecting details about people is moving toward smart card technology and its offspring. The new wave in genealogy is authentication technology. Authentication begins with new-wave technology used to gather population registers. Compare the new technology to the old method of door-to-door census taking, tombstone tracings, and city directory publishing. No, genealogists are not using smart cards this year, but smart card technology is being used to compile population registers in Europe. The future holds a new wave of technology used for authentication for banking transactions being applied to other areas. Currently this technology is used for collecting details for population registrars such as census taking. The application for research is of interest to family historians, librarians, and governments. It's already in use by private industry for electronic authentication. Family history is now about intelligent connections, whether it's a population registrar, census detail, or electronic identity for banking. Smart card genealogy began in 1998 in Finland with governments seeking to put census and population registers in an electronic form that would be available to researchers, and these applications are going global.

Download or read book Sophene Gordyene and Adiabene written by Michał Marciak and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sophene, Gordyene, and Adiabene, M. Marciak offers the first-ever comprehensive study of the history and culture of these three little-known countries of Northern Mesopotamia (3rd century BCE – 7th century CE). The book gives an overview of the historical geography, material culture, and political history of each of these countries. Furthermore, the summary offers a regional perspective by describing the history of this area as a subject of the political and cultural competition of great powers. This book answers both a recent growth of interest in ancient Mesopotamia as the frontier area, as well as the urgent need for documentation of the cultural heritage of a region that has recently become subject to the destructive influence of sectarian violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antigone Samellas examines the modes of reception of Jesus' message of salvation. She explores the Greek and Jewish influence on Christian eschatology and traces the Hellenistic roots of Christian consolation philosophy. The author examines Christianity as a 'total therapy of grief' and highlights the differences that existed between the religious cures and the Hellenistic philosophical therapies. To gain a better understanding of the process of conversion to the new faith Antigone Samellas also investigates which aspects of Christianity were appealing and which repugnant in the eyes of pagans and Jews. Finally, she attempts to convey something of the wisdom of the East, in all its cultural and religious nuances, to the modern reader.
