Book Land Mammals and Sea Creatures

Download or read book Land Mammals and Sea Creatures written by Jen Neale and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A startling, moving magic realist debut Almost immediately upon Julie Bird’s return to the small port town where she was raised, everyday life is turned upside down. Julie’s Gulf War vet father, Marty, has been on the losing side of a battle with PTSD for too long. A day of boating takes a dramatic turn when a majestic blue whale beaches itself and dies. A blond stranger sets up camp oceanside: she’s an agitator, musician-impersonator, and armchair philosopher named Jennie Lee Lewis — and Julie discovers she’s connected to her father’s mysterious trip to New Mexico 25 years earlier. As the blue whale decays on the beach, more wildlife turns up dead — apparently by suicide — echoing Marty’s deepest desire. But Julie isn’t ready for a world without her father. A stunning exploration of love and grief, Land Mammals and Sea Creatures is magic realism on the seaside, a novel about living life to the fullest and coming to your own terms with its end.

Download or read book On Land and Sea written by Lee A. Newsom and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2004-05-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the vast stretches of early geologic time, the islands of the Caribbean archipelago separated from continental land masses, rose and sank many times, merged with and broke from other land masses, and then by the mid-Cenozoic period settled into the current pattern known today. By the time Native Americans arrived, the islands had developed complex, stable ecosystems. The actions these first colonists took on the landscape—timber clearing, cultivation, animal hunting and domestication, fishing and exploitation of reef species—affected fragile land and sea biotic communities in both beneficial and harmful ways. On Land and Sea examines the condition of biosystems on Caribbean islands at the time of colonization, human interactions with those systems through time, and the current state of biological resources in the West Indies. Drawing on a massive data set collected from long-term archaeological research, the study reconstructs past lifeways on these small tropical islands. The work presents a wide range of information, including types of fuel and construction timber used by inhabitants, cooking techniques for various shellfish, availability and use of medicinal and ritual plants, the effects on native plants and animals of cultivation and domestication, and diet and nutrition of native populations. The islands of the Caribbean basin continue to be actively excavated and studied in the quest to understand the earliest human inhabitants of the New World. This comprehensive work will ground current and future studies and will be valuable to archaeologists, anthropologists, botanists, ecologists, Caribbeanists, Latin American historians, and anyone studying similar island environments.

Book Animal Life in the Sea and on the Land

Download or read book Animal Life in the Sea and on the Land written by Sarah Cooper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Life in the Sea and on the Land: A Zoology for Young People This book is offered to young people with the hope that it may help them in their studies of natural history. The pleasure of every ramble in the country or by the seaside is increased by an acquaintance with the animals and plants which are found by the way, and consequently these studies bring their own reward. It is far more charming to gain this knowledge from the objects themselves than from merely reading about them in books; and it is therefore hoped that each subject which is treated in these pages will be studied from specimens actually in hand, whenever it is possible to obtain them. The habit of collecting natural objects and curiosities is a helpful one; and if young students are careful to find out all they can about these objects, the collection will in time represent an unexpected amount of positive knowledge. The aim has been to make this little book accurate, and to bring it up to the present condition of science; at the same time scientific terms have been avoided when others could be substituted for them. Classification has not been made prominent, yet the arrangement of Nicholson has been adhered to throughout. Book Sea Lions in the Parking Lot

Download or read book Sea Lions in the Parking Lot written by Lenora Todaro and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would happen if people all around the world stayed inside, away from animals' habitats? Twelve fascinating real-life stories of creatures around the globe who reclaimed their habitat during the COVID-19 quarantine show animal lovers and aspiring citizen scientists how to help wildlife by fighting habitat loss. A Junior Library Guild selection. With the skies, roads, and waterways clear and quiet during the COVID-19 pandemic, the natural world seemed to return to an earlier, wilder state. Animals crossed boundaries that people had set over centuries, reclaiming ancient habitats. From sea lions who clambered into a parking lot in Argentina to deer who wandered in a Japanese subway to lions lounging in the middle of South African roads to kangaroos who bounced through a shopping district in Australia, this thoroughly researched, stunningly illustrated book tells the stories of these newly footloose creatures -- and describes what the COVID-19 "pause" taught scientists about how ecosystems and wildlife can rebound if the right environmental conditions are achieved.
