Book Animal Teachings

Download or read book Animal Teachings written by Dawn Brunke and published by Ryland Peters & Small. This book was released on 2015-03-07 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this insightful book, Dawn Brunke reveals how animals can help us to uncover the wisdom we have forgotten. In Animal Teachings, she groups 60 species by their specific teaching - from how to find balance and be a better communicator to being more intuitive and living a joyous life. For example, Fox, Swan and Zebra are united through the teaching of Integration. All three species can help us learn to welcome diversity, reconcile opposites and maintain individuality. Meanwhile, the teaching of Healing unites Dog, Frog and Gorilla, who teach us love and loyalty, gentleness and how to connect to our deeper self. Every entry explores the presence of that species in the natural world and its traditional teaching as it is known through myth and legend or by indigenous peoples. In addition, each group presents a personalised message for humans today: encouragement, suggestions and guidance to help us become more conscious and whole. By opening to animal wisdom, we begin to find ways to reconnect, to deepen, to communicate, to love and to more joyfully participate in the dance of life. With the help of animals, we begin to remember who we really are.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Animal Ethics

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Animal Ethics written by Andrew Linzey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-29 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ethical treatment of non-human animals is an increasingly significant issue, directly affecting how people share the planet with other creatures and visualize themselves within the natural world. The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Animal Ethics is a key reference source in this area, looking specifically at the role religion plays in the formation of ethics around these concerns. Featuring thirty-five chapters by a team of international contributors, the handbook is divided into two parts. The first gives an overview of fifteen of the major world religions’ attitudes towards animal ethics and protection. The second features five sections addressing the following topics: Human Interaction with Animals Killing and Exploitation Religious and Secular Law Evil and Theodicy Souls and Afterlife This handbook demonstrates that religious traditions, despite often being anthropocentric, do have much to offer to those seeking a framework for a more enlightened relationship between humans and non-human animals. As such, The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Animal Ethics is essential reading for students and researchers in religious studies, theology, and animal ethics as well as those studying the philosophy of religion and ethics more generally.

Book Eastern Orthodox Christianity and Animal Suffering

Download or read book Eastern Orthodox Christianity and Animal Suffering written by Christina Nellist and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first academic work in Eastern Orthodox theological literature on the subject of animal suffering and human soteriology. It represents a natural progression of the contemporary Eastern Orthodox academic debate on the environment, and will be of interest not only to academic scholars in theology, religion, philosophy and ethics, but also to the wider Christian and secular communities. Using Biblical and Patristic teachings, together with new social science research and contemporary science, it presents arguments that animal suffering is against God’s Will, and that the abuse or misuse of animals or indifference to animal suffering will result in negative consequences for human salvation. The book posits a revisionist interpretation of the Noahic narrative when addressing the challenging question of why God allows the dispensation of animals as food, and offers compelling arguments on why the contemporary animal food production industries and animal testing model should be rejected.

Book Animal Lessons

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kelly Oliver
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2009-10-08
  • ISBN : 0231520492
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Animal Lessons written by Kelly Oliver and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy reads humanity against animality, arguing that "man" is man because he is separate from beast. Deftly challenging this position, Kelly Oliver proves that, in fact, it is the animal that teaches us to be human. Through their sex, their habits, and our perception of their purpose, animals show us how not to be them. This kinship plays out in a number of ways. We sacrifice animals to establish human kinship, but without the animal, the bonds of "brotherhood" fall apart. Either kinship with animals is possible or kinship with humans is impossible. Philosophy holds that humans and animals are distinct, but in defending this position, the discipline depends on a discourse that relies on the animal for its very definition of the human. Through these and other examples, Oliver does more than just establish an animal ethics. She transforms ethics by showing how its very origin is dependent upon the animal. Examining for the first time the treatment of the animal in the work of Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Derrida, Agamben, Freud, Lacan, and Kristeva, among others, Animal Lessons argues that the animal bites back, thereby reopening the question of the animal for philosophy.

Book The Global Guide to Animal Protection

Download or read book The Global Guide to Animal Protection written by Andrew Linzey and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raising awareness of human indifference and cruelty toward animals, The Global Guide to Animal Protection includes more than 180 introductory articles that survey the extent of worldwide human exploitation of animals from a variety of perspectives. In addition to entries on often disturbing examples of human cruelty toward animals, the book provides inspiring accounts of attempts by courageous individuals--including Jane Goodall, Shirley McGreal, Birute Mary Galdikas, Richard D. Ryder, and Roger Fouts--to challenge and change exploitative practices. As concern for animals and their welfare grows, this volume will be an indispensable aid to general readers, activists, scholars, and students interested in developing a keener awareness of cruelty to animals and considering avenues for reform. Also included is a special foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, urging readers to seek justice and protection for all creatures, humans and animals alike.

Book excerpt: How to connect with animal guides to expand individual and planetary awareness • Reveals techniques for exploring dreams, shamanic journeys, healing, and shapeshifting with animals • Presents words of wisdom from cats, dogs, horses, llamas, rabbits, ravens, bears, and even insects As companions, helpers, and spiritual guides, animals have always held a special relationship with humans. As we access our natural ability to communicate with animals, we cannot help but open ourselves more profoundly to life, other human beings, and our own deep nature--the essence of who we really are. Animal Voices, Animal Guides presents a wide variety of ways in which we can tune in to the “universal language” of all life and reconnect with the animal kingdom in more conscious, meaningful ways. Through myths, shamanic journeys, and dreams we meet our power animals, spirit animals, and wise animal guides. The exercises, meditations, stories, and experiments included are designed to help us tune in to the subtle whispers of nature and expand our awareness. We learn what sled dogs have to teach us about teamwork, how llamas see themselves as healers of the world, and how it would feel to inhabit the skin of a shark. Filled with advice from animal communication professionals and actual conversations with animals, Animal Voices, Animal Guides is an invitation to explore our inner ways of knowing. When we learn how to use all our senses to listen to animals, we will find out how to listen to our authentic self as well.
