Book Animal Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Animal Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Benjamin Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Physiology The importance of the study of Animal Physiology, as a branch of General Education, can scarcely be over-estimated and it is remarkable that it is not more generally appreciated. It might have been Supposed that curiosity alone would have led the mind of Man to the eager study of those wonderful actions by which his body is constructed and maintained; and that a knowledge of those laws, the observance of which is necessary for the due performance of these actions, - in other words, for the maintenance of his health - would have been an object of universal pursuit. That it has not hitherto been so, may be attributed to several causes. The very familiarity of the occurrences is one of these. We are much more apt to seek for explanations of phenomena that rarely present themselves, than of those which we daily witness. The Comet excites the world's curiosity, whilst the movements of the sun, moon, and planets are regarded as things of course. We almost daily see vast numbers of animals of different tribes, in active life around us; their origin, growth, movements, decline, death, and reproduction, are continually taking place under our eyes, and there seems to common apprehension nothing to explain, where everything is so apparent. And of Man too, the ordinary Vital actions are so familiar, that the study of their condi Ions appears superfluous. To be born, to grow, to be subject to occasional disease, to decline, to die, is his lot in common with other animals and What know ledge can avail (it may be asked) to avert the doom imposed on him by his Creator? Book A Text Book of Human Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Human Physiology Classic Reprint written by Albert Philson Brubaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Human Physiology An animal organism in the living condition exhibits a series of phenomena which relate to growth, movement, mentality, and re production. During the period preceding birth, as well as during the period included between birth and adult life, the individual grows in size and complexity from the introduction and assimilation of material from without. Throughout its life the animal exhibits a series of movements, in virtue of which it not only changes the relation Of one part of its body to another, but also changes its posi tion relatively to its environment. If, in the execution of these movements, the parts are directed to the overcoming of opposing forces, such as gravity, friction, cohesion, elasticity, etc., the animal may be said to be doing work. The result of normal growth is the attainment of a physical development that will enable the animal, and, more especially, man, to perform the work necessitated by the nature of its environment and the character of its organization. In man, and probably in lower animals as well, mentality manifests itself as intellect, feeling, and volition. At a definite period in the life of the animal it reproduces itself, in consequence of which the species to which it belongs is perpetuated. The study of the phenomena of growth, movement, mentality, and reproduction constitutes the science of animal physiology. But as these general activities are the resultant of and dependent on the special activities of the individual structures of which an animal body 'is composed, physiology in its more restricted and generally accepted sense is the science which investigates the actions or functions of the individual organs and tissues of the body and the physical and chemic conditions which underlie and determine them. Book Elements of Animal Physiology Chiefly Human Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Animal Physiology Chiefly Human Classic Reprint written by John Angell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Animal Physiology, Chiefly Human Animal Physiology is "essentially a Science of Designs and Final Causes." Probably no subject, if taught with even moderate intelligence, can be rendered so interesting, or made to rouse the dormant energies of the intellect of young people, and of those previously untrained in the method of scientific inquiry, as that of Human Physiology. Certainly the study of no other science opens up to the mind so many wonders, solves so many human mysteries, or brings home to the mind so many proofs of the "reign of Law," and of the wise and beneficent design of this universe, or teaches so many principles which lie at the basis of human health, morals, and well-being, as that of Human Physiology. On these considerations alone, - and many other most powerful ones might be urged, - "Human Physiology" must claim a leading position in any system which professes to educate the people soundly. Very considerable experience as a Teacher of Physiology, with the youthful and adult of both sexes, has proved to the writer the facility with which the viva voce teaching of Elementary Physiology may be made "perfectly sound and thorough," when supplemented with the aid of good diagrams, a good text-book, and the free use of the black-board, and of the lungs, heart, kidney, eye, &c., of the sheep, and of such other objects as may be readily obtained from the butcher, for the illustration of the general structure of the corresponding organs of the human body; while the body of the living frog or tadpole is amply sufficient to illustrate the general phenomena of the circulation and the properties of the living tissues. The teacher should also occasionally dissect a small animal, as a rabbit, recently killed with chloroform, before his class. A Human Skeleton and a cheap Microscope will likewise be found invaluable aids to the earnest teacher. A general impression prevails, among the candidates presenting themselves at the Government Science Examinations, that it is easier to pass with the same actual knowledge in the Second Class, Advanced Stage, than in the First Class, Elementary Stage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rudiments of Animal Physiology: For Use in Schools, and for Private Instruction Both boys and girls received lessons on these subjects from Mr Downie, and the ages of the children generally ranged from nine to twelve years. The subject seems particularly fitted for interesting boys during the latter years of their classical studies, and it is hoped that the teachers of these branches will find that a few hours weekly may be profitably devoted to such lessons. If possible, the teacher should endeavour to make the lessons of one season include sections that have a close connexion with each other such, for example, as those giving an account of the organic functions, or at least those of Digestion, Circulation, and Respiration. Section VII., giving an account of the parts employed in locomotion, and Section IX. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Essentials of Veterinary Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essentials of Veterinary Physiology Classic Reprint written by D. Noel Paton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Veterinary Physiology Between the Physiology of Man and that of the Domestic Animals there is no fundamental difference, and most of our knowledge of human physiology has been acquired from experiments upon the lower animals. But while the tissues of a man, a dog, and a horse act much in the same manner, the mode of nutrition of these tissues is somewhat different, and requires special attention in the case of each. In this volume the attempt is made to give the essentials of general physiology and of the special physiology of the domestic animals in a form suitable to the requirements of Students and Practitioners of Veterinary Medicine. The book is not intended to take the place of the demonstrations and practical work from which alone physiology can be properly learned, but merely to supplement these and to focus the information derived from them.
