The Faculty, however, ih jured itself and benefitted Mesmer, by pronouncing him a charlatan and impostor without giving him, what he had asked, an examination. Deslon had been punished for as sociating with a charlatan, but the latter character was not proven upon Mesmer. In the next Spring, Mesmer an nounced his intention of leaving France, which was pro tested against not only by his infatuated patients, but even by marie-antoinette. The French government offered to constitute a comm1ss1on for an examination of the subject, but on afterwards modifying the proposition, so as to dis pense with the examination, but offering him an annuity of livres, and livres to pay for the rent of a house, in which he should instruct persons, three to be named by the government, in the principles of his discove ry, Mesmer declined, with a number of ridiculous reasons for non-acceptance, and among these the fact that he wanted territorial property rather than money. Loraina Brackett While in a State of Somnambulism For many months past, in common with most read ers, if not all, of the public journals, I had seen much upon the subject of Animal Magnetism, particularly in connexion with the names of Monsieur Poyen, and his pupil, Miss Gleason. The illustrations of M. Poyen, and the exploits of Miss Gleason while nu der the magnetic in uence imparted by him, had been standing themes of comment in the New Eng land papers. I had seen that M. Poyen was favored by many believers, some of them, even, among the disciples of jesculapius. There were others, laymen and members of the faculty, who doubted. Others, again, and probably far the largest class, were posi tive sceptics. These Were doing all in their power to discredit the professor, his science, and his patient, as well by argument as by the withering process of ridicule. Still, M. Poyen persisted in the illustrations of his favorite science, and I had noted that acces sions to the number of believers in his system wereoccasionally gained, even from the ranks both of the learned and the wise. Educated, however, in the belief that Mesmer was an impostor, that his followers were enthusiasts, and his patients affected, if at all, only through the workings of their own imaginations, and disliking, exceedingly, the public exhibitions he was making for money, - i was not only an unbe liever, but a satirist of the whole affair.
