  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Materia Magica written by Andrew Wilburn and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materia Magica approaches magic as a material endeavor, in which spoken spells, ritual actions, and physical objects all played vital roles in the performance of a rite. Through case studies drawing on objects excavated or discovered in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century at three Mediterranean sites, Andrew T. Wilburn identifies previously unknown forms of magic. He discovers evidence of the practice of magic in objects of ancient daily life, suggesting that individuals frequently turned to magic, particularly in times of crises. Studying the remains of spells enacted by practitioners, Wilburn examines the material remains of magical practice by identifying and placing them within their archaeological contexts. His method of connecting an analysis of the texts and inscriptions found on artifacts of magic with a close consideration of the physical form of these objects illuminates an exciting path toward new discoveries in the field.

Book The Animal Other in Narratives of Conquest

Download or read book The Animal Other in Narratives of Conquest written by Stacy Hoult and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Animal Other in Narratives of Conquest: Uncanny Encounters investigates the functions of nonhuman animal imagery in diverse narratives of the Conquest of the Americas. The author's explications of film, poetry, literary and popular fiction, and theme park spaces draw on postcolonial and animal theory, deconstructive and Freudian literary criticism, and radical social theory. She argues that animals in these texts function on two levels: while they play a key role in the development of both Indigenous and European characters, depictions of their treatment and symbolic charge consistently work to disrupt narratives that seek to present the Conquest as a mutually beneficial "encounter" between two cultures. The close readings of animal imagery in texts ranging from Pablo Neruda's poetry to the animated film The Road to El Dorado represent a fresh approach to questions surrounding the depictions of Indigenous Americans and the motivations, tactics, and lasting contributions of the invading culture.

Book excerpt: Embrace and deepen your understanding of the spiritual and intuitive power of tarot cards using your favorite modern anime characters and symbols. While tarot has been around for years, it’s seen a grand revival among those eager to learn how the cards can nurture intuition and spirituality in more creative, modern ways. And what better way to do that than by combining the classic symbolism of tarot with the fun and consistently appearing archetypes in anime? Whether it’s The Empress, a card representing femininity, beauty, nurturing, and abundance, being represented through the Yamato Nadeshiko character archetype, which is the epitome of purity, poise, kindness, and honesty; or The Hermit, a card linked to solitude, soul-searching, and withdrawal being linked to the Hikikomori archetype, the modern-day hermits that rely heavily on technology, social media, video games, and other forms of distanced communication and entertainment to get by, we all have an unrealized version of our true potential lying in wait, and what better way to see this potential than through our favorite anime characters. Linking these anime characters and genre theory, tropes, and archetypes to the classic symbolism of the major and minor Arcana, Anime Tarot helps you engage and deepen your understanding of your inner world.

Book The Routledge History of Medieval Magic

Download or read book The Routledge History of Medieval Magic written by Sophie Page and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge History of Medieval Magic brings together the work of scholars from across Europe and North America to provide extensive insights into recent developments in the study of medieval magic between c.1100 and c.1500. This book covers a wide range of topics, including the magical texts which circulated in medieval Europe, the attitudes of intellectuals and churchmen to magic, the ways in which magic intersected with other aspects of medieval culture, and the early witch trials of the fifteenth century. In doing so, it offers the reader a detailed look at the impact that magic had within medieval society, such as its relationship to gender roles, natural philosophy, and courtly culture. This is furthered by the book’s interdisciplinary approach, containing chapters dedicated to archaeology, literature, music, and visual culture, as well as texts and manuscripts. The Routledge History of Medieval Magic also outlines how research on this subject could develop in the future, highlighting under-explored subjects, unpublished sources, and new approaches to the topic. It is the ideal book for both established scholars and students of medieval magic.
