If these views appear in some cases to be subversive of modern biological doctrine it must be remembered that biological thought is progressive; were it otherwise the claims of bio logical science to a foremost place in our educational system might well be considered questionable. The doctrine of Organic Evolution, for example, looms large in several of the lectures, and a certain advance is to be observed from the position held by Charles Darwin and his immediate followers. The foundations of this doctrine, however, remain unshaken, and it is only the superstructure which has been, perhaps too hastily, erected upon them that is being more or less recon structed in accordance with recent investigations. The unexpectedly large audiences which were attracted to the lectures, and the great interest evinced in them at the time of delivery, seem to justify the hope that in their present form they may appeal to an even larger circle. It points out that groups of like animals, such as are small in membership and temporary in duration, are common in nature. These groups are not considered to be equivalent to species, they are referred to as family groups. A large part of the book deals with the origin, fate, and significance of such groups. Here and there the question, What is a species? is raised, but not answered. The tenth chapter is an attempt to show that the Mutation Theory is important to the physician, and the last chapter borders on philosophy. The whole appears more compact, if it be regarded as an attempt to help on the new movement in biology, to spread those ideas referred to by some as the Mutation Theory, by others as Mendelism, ideas that are permanently associated with the names of Mendel, Bateson, and De Vries. The writer's warrant for asserting himself lies not in the bulk, but in the variety of his experience, which has been derived from several sources, but from none in particular. The story begins with the prophetic visions of Saint-Simon and assesses the contributions of such diverse thinkers as Comte, Marx, Dewey, Mannheim, Tugwell, Mumford, Simon, and Habermas. It is carried forward in Part Three by Friedmann's own nontechnocratic, dialectical approach to planning as a method for recovering political community.
