Book Animal Illustration The Essential Reference

Download or read book Animal Illustration The Essential Reference written by Carol Belanger Grafton and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive and entertaining, this volume comprises the greatest works in animal illustration from the Middle Ages through the twentieth century. The chronological presentation of hundreds of black-and-white and color images begins with a medieval illuminated manuscript by the Limbourg brothers and the Renaissance works of Albrecht Dürer and other artists from the first centuries of printing. Subsequent illustrations include the seventeenth-century real and imaginary animals of Matthäus Merian and the unique eighteenth-century compilations of Albertus Seba. Nineteenth-century images are drawn from sources as diverse as J. G. Heck's Bilder Atlas; the prints of Georges Baron Cuvier; William Jardine's 40-volume Naturalist's Library; bird illustrations by John James Audubon, Alexander Wilson, Edward Lear, and many others; extraordinary butterfly and insect images by E. A. Seguy, as well as animal illustrations from Victorian chromolithograph die cuts. The exquisite Edwardian bestiary of the Detmold brothers brings the collection into the twentieth century, and ends with the imagery of contemporary dinosaur artist James Gurney. Detailed bibliographical information concerning every source—including biographical details of each artist—makes this collection a vital reference tool as well as a splendid resource of outstanding animal illustrations. Students of graphic art and illustration, as well as graphic designers and advertising professionals, will prize this treasury of material from many rare historic sources.

  • Author : J. Keri Cronin

Download or read book Art for Animals written by J. Keri Cronin and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal rights activists today regularly use visual imagery in their efforts to shape the public’s understanding of what it means to be “kind,” “cruel,” and “inhumane” toward animals. Art for Animals explores the early history of this form of advocacy through the images and the people who harnessed their power. Following in the footsteps of earlier-formed organizations like the RSPCA and ASPCA, animal advocacy groups such as the Victoria Street Society for the Protection of Animals from Vivisection made significant use of visual art in literature and campaign materials. But, enabled by new and improved technologies and techniques, they took the imagery much further than their predecessors did, turning toward vivid, pointed, and at times graphic depictions of human-animal interactions. Keri Cronin explains why the activist community embraced this approach, details how the use of such tools played a critical role in educational and reform movements in the United States, Canada, and England, and traces their impact in public and private spaces. Far from being peripheral illustrations of points articulated in written texts or argued in impassioned speeches, these photographs, prints, paintings, exhibitions, “magic lantern” slides, and films were key components of animal advocacy at the time, both educating the general public and creating a sense of shared identity among the reformers. Uniquely focused on imagery from the early days of the animal rights movement and filled with striking visuals, Art for Animals sheds new light on the history and development of modern animal advocacy.

Book Fine Art Animal Drawing Reference Book

Download or read book Fine Art Animal Drawing Reference Book written by Burst Books and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-28 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This drawing course gives you the opportunity to master realistic studies of various animals. The book contains illustrations from two famous french artists. Grand Cours d' Animaux was a drawing course by Hippolyte Lalaisse and additional drawings from Juliette Peyrol Bonheur were sold in art houses Paris & New York in the 19th century. Carefully copy these classical fine art animal drawings and improve your drawing skills accordingly. I totally support the point of view of French art teachers of the 19th century that fine art students need to study the rich traditions of the classical art. French schools at that time advocated the following sequence of art education: Drawing copies of classical art plates Copying drawings by the Old Masters Drawing classical casts - busts and figures Drawing live models You can become an expert artist by training in the proven traditional classical way. Should you buy a copy of this book? If you're really serious about improving drawing skills, and you're willing to put in some hard hours of practice, then yes, you should definitely buy it. If you just love drawing and have cash to burn, you should buy it. If you're in the habit of buying art instruction books but you cant really draw that much, this book isn't going to magically help you draw better. But neither is any art book.
