Book Animal Identification and Meat Traceability

Download or read book Animal Identification and Meat Traceability written by Geoffrey S. Becker and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Animal identification (ID) refers to marking individual or groups of farm animals so that they can be tracked from birth to slaughter. Animal ID is one segment of meat traceability, generally the tracking of identifiable products through the entire marketing chain to the ultimate consumer. Animal ID and meat traceability have been suggested as potentially useful tools in animal health, food safety, quality assurance, or country-of-origin labeling programs. Animal ID bills introduced in the 109th Congress include H.R. 1254, the National Farm Animal Identification and Records Act, H.R. 1256, to limit animal ID information disclosure, and H.R. 3170, creating a private Livestock Identification Board to oversee the program. This report will be updated if events warrant." p. 2.

Book Developing sustainable value chains for small scale livestock producers

Download or read book Developing sustainable value chains for small scale livestock producers written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication constitutes a practical development tool, which implements the sustainable food value chain framework with a focus on small-scale livestock producers, targeting an audience of project design teams and policymakers. Small-scale livestock producers are important actors in food production, human health and management of landscapes and animal genetic resources. However, they face a number of challenges, which hamper their productivity, access to market, and competitiveness vis-à-vis their larger counterparts. By integrating the concepts of value addition and the three dimensions of sustainability, the sustainable food value chain framework not only addresses questions concerning the competitiveness, inclusion and empowerment of small-scale producers, but also incorporates the cross-cutting issues that are increasingly embedded in development projects. These guidelines take the user through the different steps of value chain development, highlighting the particularities of the smallholder livestock sector, such as multi-functionality, specific production cycles or food safety issues, through concrete examples.

Book Essays on Economics of Cattle and Beef Traceability

Download or read book Essays on Economics of Cattle and Beef Traceability written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first essay inquires into the economic: value and the optimal expected traceback rate of success for a trace-ability system from the cattle slaughter room through the fabrication floor with a case study of injection-site lesions in fed cattle in the US. The method developed by Grossman and Hart (1983) is adapted to model and solve a Principal-Agent model with beef traceability. By maintaining the identity of the fed cattle suppliers (Agents) and animal ID attached to retail beef cuts with certain probability, a traceability system makes incentive mechanisms feasible. First-best action may be induced by meat packers (Principal) with incentive mechanisms created with a traceability system with a low expected traceback rate of success. This result was not sensitive to changes in the way traceability systems' costs were; estimated. Further, a traceability system may have no value when risk averse feedlot owners can do little to affect the frequency of injection-site lesions in fed cattle. Finally, the Principal-Agent model developed in the present study presents potential to be employed in studying other problems in which identity preservation is a concern. The second essay investigates the economic value of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) in the US. It is assumed that benefits may come from how the NAIS will affect the final consumer's food safety concerns about eating meat. Generalized almost ideal and quadratic almost ideal demand systems are estimated incorporating food safety indices for beef, pork and poultry. It is found that food safety impacts upon the final demand for meat are small and do not present lagged effects. Three scenarios are constructed on the basis of hypothesized impacts of the NAIS on consumers' food safety concerns about meat. Differences in predicted total revenue for beef, pork and poultry between scenarios are used as gross measures of the benefits of the NAIS. If most benefits with the NAIS are expected to come from demand shifts up, the US government will need to subsidize its implementation and maintenance to make the NAIS economically feasible.

Book excerpt: Advances in Food Traceability Techniques and Technologies: Improving Quality Throughout the Food Chain covers in detail a topic of great importance to both the food industry which is obliged to provide clear and accurate labeling of their products and the government and other organizations which are tasked with verification of claims of food quality and safety. The traceability of food products is becoming ever more important as globalization continues to increase the complexity of food chains. Coverage in the book includes the wide range of technologies and techniques which have been utilized in the tracing of food products. In addition, the ways in which the misuse of food traceability will affect the quality of food is also covered throughout. The first part of the book introduces the concept of traceability in the food industry, highlighting advantages of a robust traceability and the difficulties involved in implementing them. The second part looks at the technologies used to trace products, and the third section reviews the legal requirements for food traceability in the EU, the US, and the rest of the world. The final section contains a number of case studies which evaluate how food traceability has been successfully implemented in various foods focusing on the quality of the food. Provides a wide ranging overview of all recent advances in food traceability techniques and technologies Presents case studies covering when food traceability techniques have been applied to a range of food stuffs Covers the legal aspects of food traceability in the EU, the USA, and around the world

Book Food Traceability

Download or read book Food Traceability written by Jennifer McEntire and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a picture of food traceability for all aspects of the food system, recognizing the unique differences, challenges, and “states of the industry” in different types of food products, as well as the different pressures and opportunities at different points in the supply chain and the research that has already been done. It also provides some historical context, along with the types of solutions available to the food industry, and the benefits associated with better recordkeeping that go beyond the public good and impact the bottom line. Whenever a food related outbreak occurs, traceability is called into question. When lives are at stake, it is critical that the root of the problem is quickly identified to prevent further illness. Once the problem is found, it’s just as important to contain it quickly. Too often, recalls expand because implicated product is not readily accounted for. Mention of traceability stirs fear for many in the food industry for several reasons: within a company, it’s not clear if responsibility for traceability lies with food safety professionals involved in recalls, supply chain professionals who understand product movement, IT professionals who build and maintain the recordkeeping systems, or regulatory professionals who need to respond to government requests for information. There is also a sense that traceability is someone else’s problem. Few firms admit that they are the weak link and instead tout how quickly they can perform mock recalls. But traceability is about more than just recalls. It is about the connectivity of the supply chain as a product and its constituents travel from the farm to the consumer. Because it is a systems issue, there is a sense that the investment by a single firm will be meaningless if supply chain partners don’t have comparable abilities. This book will address both these surrounding issues and solutions.
