Book Mark Twain

Download or read book Mark Twain written by Ron Powers and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 1176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twain's story is epic, comic and tragic. To retrace it all in illuminating detail, Powers draws on the tens of thousands of Twain's letters and on his astonishing journal entries - many of which are quoted here for the first time. Twain left Missouri for a life on the Mississippi during the golden age of steamboats, enjoyed an uproariously drunken newspaper career in the Nevada of the Wild West, and witnessed and joined the extremes of wealth and poverty of New York City and of the Gilded Age. Through it all he observed, borrowed, stole and combined the characters he met into the voice of America's greatest literature, attracting throngs of fans wherever his undying lust for wandering took him. From Twain's wicked satire to his relationships with the likes of Ulysses Grant, this is a brilliantly written story that astounds, amuses and edifies as only a great life can.

  • Author : Robert Louis Stevenson
  • Publisher : Birlinn
  • Release : 2013-06-24
  • ISBN : 0857907085
  • Pages : 562 pages

Download or read book Kidnapped Catriona written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-06-24 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Kidnapped" (1886) and later fiction such as "The Master of Ballantrae" (1888), Stevenson examined some of the extreme and contrary currents of Scotland's past, often projecting a dualism of both personality and belief. This dualism is most famous in "Kidnapped", whose two central characters are David Balfour, a Lowland Whig, and Alan Breck Stewart, a Highland Jacobite. The novel revolves around their friendship and their differences, suggesting a metaphor for Scotland itself. Stevenson wrote the sequel "Catriona" with the title David Balfour, but during serialisation in England the public became confused, thinking it might be a reprint of "Kidnapped". At publisher Cassell's request, the title was changed to "Catriona", after Balfour's daughter.

Book The Translator

Download or read book The Translator written by Daoud Hari and published by Random House. This book was released on 2008-03-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A suspenseful and deeply moving memoir that “lays open the Darfur geocide . . . intimately and powerfully” (The Washington Post Book World) and shows how one person can make a difference in the world. “A book of unusually humane power and astounding moral clarity.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) I am the translator who has taken journalists into dangerous Darfur. It is my intention now to take you there in this book, if you have the courage to come with me. Daoud Hari—his friends call him David—is a Zaghawa tribesman and grew up in a village in the Darfur region of Sudan. As a child he saw colorful weddings, raced his camels across the desert, and played games in the moonlight after his work was done. This traditional life shattered in 2003 when helicopter gunships appeared over Darfur’s villages. Hari was among the hundreds of thousands of villagers attacked and driven from their homes by Sudanese-government-backed militia groups. Though Hari’s village was burned to the ground, his family decimated and dispersed, he himself escaped, eventually finding safety across the border. Roaming the battlefield deserts on camels, he and a group of his friends helped survivors find food, water, and the way to safety. With his high school knowledge of languages, Hari offered his services as a translatorand guide after international aid groups and reporters arrived. In doing so, he risked his life again and again, for the government of Sudan had outlawed journalists in the region, and death was the punishment for those who aided the “foreign spies.” And then, inevitably, his luck ran out and he was captured. . . . The Translator tells the remarkable story of a young man who came face-to-face with genocide—time and again risking his own life to fight injustice and save his people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hayao Miyazaki's career in animation has made him famous as not only the greatest director of animated features in Japan, the man behind classics as My Neighbour Totoro (1988) and Spirited Away (2001), but also as one of the most influential animators in the world, providing inspiration for animators in Disney, Pixar, Aardman, and many other leading studios. However, the animated features directed by Miyazaki represent only a portion of his 50-year career. Hayao Miyazaki examines his earliest projects in detail, alongside the works of both Japanese and non-Japanese animators and comics artists that Miyazaki encountered throughout his early career, demonstrating how they all contributed to the familiar elements that made Miyazaki's own films respected and admired among both the Japanese and the global audience.

Book excerpt: Considering the literary habits - production, reception, selection - in a colonial Ghana, this study provides empirical and statistical data of how colonial literature is absorbed - and coins the new term paracolonial to better describe the ebb and flow of influence and creativity. It shows how colonial West Africa (the Gold Coast) adapted to an imposed education system and developed its own indigenous cultural representation, far beyond the previously conceived limited vocabularly of simple mimicry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We're family. We don't have to like each other. Things are never easy for Ellis when the family gets together. A dad who doesn't get him, a cousin who can do no wrong, a (not-so-passive) aggressive grandma, his dad's latest intolerable girlfriend and a grandpa in an urn are just some of the things Ellis has to contend with. When it begins to become tradition at these occasions for true feelings to be unearthed, is it finally time for Ellis to cut ties? Set in the back room of a social club, away from the main action, the play journeys us through a wake, a wedding and a christening, and lifts the lid on the tensions behind every family ritual. Many things change over the years but something that will always remain is the same cold buffet. Elijah Young's epic comedy The Cold Buffet follows the McCarthy family over five years of life, death and love. It's a delicious North East family saga laced with dry humour and a good dose of interpersonal tension. This edition was published to coincide with the world premiere at Newcastle's Live Theatre, in October 2023.
