Book Early Nineteenth Century Chemistry and the Analysis of Urinary Stones

Download or read book Early Nineteenth Century Chemistry and the Analysis of Urinary Stones written by E. Allen Driggers and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-14 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how chemists, physicians, and surgeons attempted to end the problem of urinary stones. From the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth centuries, chemists wanted to understand why the body formed urinary, pancreatic, and other bodily stones. Chemical analysis was an exciting new means of understanding these stones and researchers hoped of possibly preventing their formation entirely. Physicians and surgeons also hoped that, with improved chemical analysis, they would eventually identify substances that would reduce the size of stones, leading to their easier removal from the body. Urinary stones and other stones of the body caused the boundaries of surgery, chemistry, and medicine to blur. The problem of the stone was transformational and spurred collaboration between chemistry and medicine. Some radical physicians in America and Britain combined this nascent medical advancement with older disciplines, like humoral theory. Chemists, surgeons, and physicians in Charleston, Philadelphia, and London focused on the stones of the body. Chemical societies and museums also involved themselves in the problem of the stone. Meanwhile, institutions in Charleston, Philadelphia, and London served as repositories of specimens for testing and study as previously disparate practitioners and disciplines worked toward the comprehensive knowledge that could, perhaps, end suffering from stones. The primary audience of this book is historically-minded chemists, surgeons, physicians, and museum professionals.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Progress and Present State of Animal Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 3 The chemical properties of this fubllance appear to be very fingular, fiuce on the one fide they make it refemble the fixed Oil, and on the other the volatile. It melts at 35 of Reaumur, which property makes it verv couves nient to convert into candles, the more lo, on account of it's burning with a very clear white flame, without any bad Odour. In North America very large quantities of thelc candles are made. \ve are informed by Fourcroy, that a few years ago, Lepefcheux eiiablifbed a manufac tory Of this kind in the Rue l'echiquier, Fauxbourg St. Denis, at Paris; the procefs he makes ufe of confifts in letting the lilh Oil repole in wooden cafks lined with lead, and at the bottom of theic cat 's, mailes of fpermaceti are precipitated, which, previouflv ditlbli'ed in the'animal oil, feparate from it gradually by a real cryftallization. In proportion as this precip1tat1on takes place, the Oil be comes clear, is purified, and much more proper for lamps; when the oil is very clear, it is decanted the fpermaccti taken from the bottom, is proficd in order to feparate a portion ofoil which adheres to it, then melted by a gen tle heat, and fercral times fubmitted to prclltire and in lion, until at length it becomes white, cryllalline, and of a fiber colour. In this (late it is moulded into difibrent kinds of candles, which are of a fplendid whitenefs, and of a much more beautiful tranfparency and brilliancy than wax. They are alfo manufaclured in England. Ex pol'ed to a warm air, fpermaccti becomes yellow and ran cid, but leis eatily than the other concrete fixed Oils. The water in which it has been boiled, on evaporation, gives but a flight mucolo-uneluous refidue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Animal Chemistry Vol 1 of 2 written by J. Franz Simon and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2: With Reference to the Physiology and Pathlogy of Man I have much pleasure in presenting to the members of the Sydenham Society a translation of Simon's 'Chemistry of Man, ' a work that obtained for its author a European reputation, and is universally regarded as by far the most complete treatise that has yet appeared on Physiological Chemistry. Until I became acquainted with this work in 1843, I entertained the idea of publishing a text-book of medical chemistry with the view of attempting to supply a deficiency in the medical literature of this country, which, I doubt not, has been felt by many of my brethren as much as by myself. But a careful perusal of the 'Chemistry of Man' convinced me that I should be doing better service to the profession by undertaking a translation of that work than by the publication of a separate treatise. Impressed with this feeling I wrote to the author, who immediately offered me all the assistance in his power, and promised me a considerable amount of original matter. I regret to say that his early and unexpected death in the autumn of the same year rendered this promise of comparatively little value. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of the Physiological Chemistry of the Animal Body, Vol. 2: Including an Account of the Chemical Changes Occurring in Disease; The Physiological Chemistry of Digestion The first volume of this work which appeared in the year 18 80 formed a 'complete and independent treatise on the physiological chemistry of the elementary tissues of the animal body, including under this designation the blood, the lymph, and the chyle. The present volume, like its predecessor, constitutes an independent and complete treatise; it deals with the physiological chemistry of the digestive processes, which have been treated on the same lines as were followed in Vol. I. My aims and endeavours are clearly set forth in the following sentences which appeared in the preface to that volume: It has been a constant object with me to give the reader a very full and, so far as possible, independent account of the state of knowledge on the subjects discussed. And I trust I may with complete truthfulness say that this work is based upon a study of original memoirs, rather than upon a study of text-books. In the interest of the student, nearly all papers are quoted by their full titles and few have been quoted which have not been thoroughly rad and studied. Whenever quotations have been made at second hand the fact has been stated.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
