Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Chemistry, or Chemistry in Its Applications to Physiology and Pathology In a special chapter, newly added to the work, he has made an attempt to set in a clearer light the mutual relations of Chem; istry and Physics to Physiology and Pathology; and here he cannot refrain from acknowledging how great have been his ob ligations, in reference to this object, to the study of Mr. Mill's System of Logic (london, 2nd cd., Indeed, he feels that he can claim no other merit than that of having applied to some special cases, and carried out further than had been previously done, those principles of research in natural science which have been laid down by that distinguished philosopher. Book excerpt: Progress requires the conquest of nature. Or does it? This startling new account overturns conventional interpretations of Marx and in the process outlines a more rational approach to the current environmental crisis. Marx, it is often assumed, cared only about industrial growth and the development of economic forces. John Bellamy Foster examines Marx's neglected writings on capitalist agriculture and soil ecology, philosophical naturalism, and evolutionary theory. He shows that Marx, known as a powerful critic of capitalist society, was also deeply concerned with the changing human relationship to nature. Marx's Ecology covers many other thinkers, including Epicurus, Charles Darwin, Thomas Malthus, Ludwig Feuerbach, P. J. Proudhon, and William Paley. By reconstructing a materialist conception of nature and society, Marx's Ecology challenges the spiritualism prevalent in the modern Green movement, pointing toward a method that offers more lasting and sustainable solutions to the ecological crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmentalism and social sciences appear to be in a period of disorientation and perhaps transition. In this innovative collection, leading international thinkers explore the notion that one explanation for the current malaise of the “politics of ecology” is that we increasingly find ourselves negotiating “technonatural” space/times. International contributors map the political ecologies of our technonatural present and indicate possible paths for technonatural futures. The term “technonatures” is in debt to a long line of environmental cultural theory from Raymond Williams onwards, problematizing the idea that a politics of the environment can be usefully grounded in terms of the rhetoric of defending the pure, the authentic, or an idealized past solely in terms of the ecological or the natural. In using the term “technonatures” as an organizing myth and metaphor for thinking about the politics of nature in contemporary times, this collection seeks to explore one increasingly pronounced dimension of the social natures discussion. Technonatures highlights a growing range of voices considering the claim that we are not only inhabiting diverse social natures but that within such natures our knowledge of our worlds is ever more technologically mediated, produced, enacted, and contested.

Book Helmholtz and the Conservation of Energy

Download or read book Helmholtz and the Conservation of Energy written by Kenneth L. Caneva and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 759 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the sources Helmholtz drew upon for his formulation of the conservation of energy and the impact of his work on nineteenth-century physics. In 1847, Herman Helmholtz, arguably the most important German physicist of the nineteenth century, published his formulation of what became known as the conservation of energy--unarguably the most important single development in physics of that century, transforming what had been a conglomeration of separate topics into a coherent field unified by the concept of energy. In Helmholtz and the Conservation of Energy, Kenneth Caneva offers a detailed account of Helmholtz's work on the subject, the sources that he drew upon, the varying responses to his work from scientists of the era, and the impact on physics as a discipline. Caneva describes the set of abiding concerns that prompted Helmholtz's work, including his rejection of the idea of a work-performing vital force, and investigates Helmholtz's relationship to both an older generation of physicists and an emerging community of reformist physiologists. He analyzes Helmholtz's indebtedness to Johannes Müller and Justus Liebig and discusses Helmholtz's tense and ambivalent relationship to the work of Robert Mayer, who had earlier proposed the uncreatability, indestructibility, and transformability of "force." Caneva examines Helmholtz's continued engagement with the subject, his role in the acceptance of the conservation of energy as the central principle of physics, and the eventual incorporation of the principle in textbooks as established science.

This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Chemistry or the Relations of Chemistry to Physiology and Pathology: A Manual for Medical Men and Scientific Chemists For four years I was occupied with the practical study of subjects comprehended in the following chapters, and during the whole of that time there were no fluctuations in the success attending the labours in which my services were involved. The field of research was a comparatively new one, and in whatever direction the methods of science were applied, results of no doubtful meaning were obtained. Simultaneously with these discoveries greater fields for research came to view; so quickly, indeed, that at every point the hand failed to keep time with the mind. It was therefore a matter of sincere regret with me that circumstances (which are said to be stronger than men) ultimately necessitated the discontinuance of my connection with work which had given me so much real pleasure. Pleasure is a different thing to different men. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
