Book excerpt: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects an individual's ability to communicate, create social relationships, and regulate sensory input and repetitive behaviors. An uncommon intervention used in ASD treatment is farm animal assisted therapy (AAT). AAT interventions focus on the use of animals in adjunct to achieve goals and outcomes. Farm AAT is defined as the use of farm animals such as cows, sheep, goats, horses, and pigs in AAT interventions. There is a lack of evidence on the use of farm animals and their benefits within the scope of AAT and in recreational therapy. The purpose of this study was to provide evidence, from the perspective of parents, of the potential benefits of farm AAT as a recreational therapy intervention for individuals with ASD. Data collection using a semi-structured interview guide was conducted over the phone with parents who participated in family session programs at the study location. Five participants were selected who matched the inclusion criteria for this study. The findings from this study reported that there were increases in social behaviors, regulation of behaviors, and a sense of normalcy for the children. The findings from this study will provide a foundation for future research related to farm AAT such as evidenced-based curriculums and practices. The data will provide therapists and parents with an understanding of the potential benefits that are gained from participation in farm AAT interventions.

Due to the unique needs of children with ASD, therapeutic services may be sought to improve daily living skills and motor skills. In addition to deficits in communication and language abilities, as well as repetitive, stereotyped behaviors and interests, behavior problems and a lack motivation can be present in anyone with ASD. These characteristics may create unforeseen obstacles and challenges for a therapist or researcher during a motor skills evaluation. In various settings the use of an animal assisted intervention (AAI), commonly introducing a therapy dog to a familiar or stressful situation, has been shown to be beneficial in increasing engagement and attention while decreasing disruptive behaviors and physiological This study was exploratory in nature and therefore, no predications were made. The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of a therapy dog on children with ASD during a standardized motor skills assessment. Specifically, Total Test score of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (MABC-2), heart rate and percentage of time engaged and off task during the assessment were monitored for this study. This study employed an ABA design, in which seven boys with ASD (10.3 + 1.1 years) completed the MABC-2 three times - twice without a therapy dog present (A) and once with a therapy dog present (B). While no significant statistical differences were found among baseline and intervention conditions, the slight emergence of common themes could be seen in qualitative reports. Older participants had a decreased heart rate and percentage of time off task whereas younger participants had an increased heart rate and percentage of time off task with the therapy dog present. While generalizations cannot be made, future studies should aim to increase the number of participants to observe if the therapy dog effects score, heart rate or percentage of time spent engaged and off task during a motor skills assessment.

Purpose and Aims: To summarize major findings related to animal-assisted therapy (AAT) in children with ASD and answer the following question: In children with autism spectrum disorder, does the use of animal-assisted therapy compared to no animal therapy increase positive social interactions? Theoretical Background: Kolcaba’s theory of holistic comfort is used as a framework to support the use of AAT in children with ASD. Method: Data was collected through the CINAHL database. Keywords used in the database search include “autism or asd or autism spectrum disorder” and “animal assisted therapy or pet therapy or animal therapy or animal intervention or animal assisted activity.” These key phrases were mentioned in 99 articles within the U.S., Australia, Greece, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, and other countries. Inclusion criteria includes peer reviewed journal articles written in English, those mentioning AAT and children with ASD, and published between 2006 and 2019. Findings: Therapy dogs promote verbal and nonverbal behaviors in children with ASD. Other common themes include decreased anxiety, decreased negative behaviors, increased social interaction, and improved mood. Conclusion: Articles with higher levels of evidence, larger sample size, and increased generalizability and statistical power are needed to determine treatment effectiveness and differences in treatment outcomes.
