Download or read book Doga written by Jennifer Brilliant and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogs have always been natural yogis, and their tranquility of mind, ability to be in the moment, and contented outlook are widely considered to be the result of their long and devoted practice of doga. Dogis Benny, Buster, and Cricket practiced in obscurity for years, perfecting their dogic principles. Now at last they reveal the powerful secrets of doga. Many of the movements and positions of doga can inspire and assist humans in their own yoga practice. Doga presents the major asanas or postures, from the Downward-Facing Dog to the relaxing Happy Puppy and restorative Pup's Pose. Each stretch is demonstrated by one of the dogis, with accompanying text to help people adapt positions to their own practice. Also included are breathing techniques such as the hot breath, or pant, and tips on practicing with your own dogi. Anyone who does yoga or owns a dog is sure to find inspiration in these pages. On the path to health and inner harmony, Doga shows the way.
Download or read book Yoga Tales written by Nisha Arya and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People in ancient India lived in harmony with animals. This is obvious from the Panchatantra (pronounced as Pancha - tan - tra) tales, ancient animal fables that originated in India around 3rd century BCE. These stories, passed down by word of mouth for generations, show that people in ancient India observed animal behavior closely and each animal was given a human character based on its unique characteristics. The cow is seen as a "giver of life" because it provides milk. The monkey is regarded as clever and loyal and is also worshipped as the monkey god Hanuman. The cobra and the lion are feared but are also worshipped to prevent them from causing harm to humans. Many yoga poses are named after animals. Though there is no historical evidence that yoga poses were inspired by the Panchatantra tales, the prominent role that both the Panchatantra and yoga play in Indian life and culture have inspired me to link each Yoga pose named after an animal to a Panchatantra tale about the same animal. If you are an animal and yoga lover, I hope that that you will enjoy practicing these animal yoga poses and reading their stories. If animals or yoga are not your thing, I hope you will read the stories to find out why people in ancient India were so fascinated by animals and how they became a part of their lives and legend.

Download or read book Food for the Soul written by Steven J. Rosen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revealing compilation of essays by prominent practitioners and well-informed scholars lays to bear one simple truth: One must be a vegetarian to properly practice Yoga. Bringing together the work of nine distinguished scholars and practitioners of Yoga and Eastern thought, Food for the Soul: Vegetarianism and Yoga Traditions is organized around the fact that, although vegetarianism is a natural and inescapable part of the Yogic tradition, many Yogis and Yoginis today remain blissfully unaware of that fact. The essays gathered here explore the important and much-debated subject of vegetarianism in the major Yoga traditions, looking at what diet has to do with the practice of Yoga and whether ahimsa (harmlessness) is a prerequisite for achieving Yoga's goals. The contributors draw on history, philosophy, ancient Yoga texts, Hindu scriptures, comparative religion, contemporary practitioners, the words of sages, and the teachings of Yogic masters to forge illuminating insights into the subject. Readers, whether students of Hinduism, practitioners of Yoga, vegetarian or animal rights advocates, or simply people with an interest, will find both the questions and the answers provocative—and edifying.
Download or read book Trauma Sensitive Yoga written by Dagmar Härle and published by Singing Dragon. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traumatic events are more than a narrative or singular event in a person's life; the body remembers traumatic events and can experience them over and over, even after many years have passed. This book shows how trauma-sensitive yoga can be used in individual therapy and in groups to overcome trauma, by calming the nervous system and helping people to come out of dissociative states. The book also shows teachers how to detect when certain postures trigger anxiety, and offers ways to support healing in general yoga classes. Drawing on her experience as both trauma therapist and yoga teacher, the author focuses on the body-mind connection and presents asanas and breathing exercises that can help traumatised patients re-engage and take control of their bodies.
