Book Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability

Download or read book Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2050 the world's population is projected to grow by one-third, reaching between 9 and 10 billion. With globalization and expected growth in global affluence, a substantial increase in per capita meat, dairy, and fish consumption is also anticipated. The demand for calories from animal products will nearly double, highlighting the critical importance of the world's animal agriculture system. Meeting the nutritional needs of this population and its demand for animal products will require a significant investment of resources as well as policy changes that are supportive of agricultural production. Ensuring sustainable agricultural growth will be essential to addressing this global challenge to food security. Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability identifies areas of research and development, technology, and resource needs for research in the field of animal agriculture, both nationally and internationally. This report assesses the global demand for products of animal origin in 2050 within the framework of ensuring global food security; evaluates how climate change and natural resource constraints may impact the ability to meet future global demand for animal products in sustainable production systems; and identifies factors that may impact the ability of the United States to meet demand for animal products, including the need for trained human capital, product safety and quality, and effective communication and adoption of new knowledge, information, and technologies. The agricultural sector worldwide faces numerous daunting challenges that will require innovations, new technologies, and new ways of approaching agriculture if the food, feed, and fiber needs of the global population are to be met. The recommendations of Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability will inform a new roadmap for animal science research to meet the challenges of sustainable animal production in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: First published in 1980. Animal agriculture serves human needs. Three-fourths of the protein, one-third of the energy, most of the calcium and phosphorus and substantial amounts of essential vitamins and other minerals in the American diet are from animal products. Recognizing that innovative research holds the key to meeting these challenges, 210 concerned individuals convened at Boyne Mountain, Michigan, May 4 to 9, 1980. Their goal was to identify priorities for future research to enable animal agriculture to efficiently and effectively serve human needs in the 21st century. These proceedings represent the best collective judgment on research priorities by a group of informed and dedicated people concerned with the future role of animal agriculture in meeting human needs.

Book Agriculture and Climate Beyond 2015

Download or read book Agriculture and Climate Beyond 2015 written by Floor Brouwer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactions between agriculture, climate and patterns of land use are complex. Major changes in agriculture, and land use patterns are foreseen in the next couple of decades in response to shifts in climate, greenhouse gas management initiatives, population growth and other forces. The book explores key interactions between changes in agriculture, patterns of land use and efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions from agriculture. The volume is based on inter-disciplinary science and policy interactions, exploring the way land use may aid in addressing or be affected by the onset of climate change and alterations in food demand. Future forces shaping land use decisions are examined, and its sensitivity to climate change is highlighted. Patterns of land use and the agricultural role in climate change mitigation are explored. Also, policy and social responses to the new perspectives on future land use patterns are identified. The perspective of the book is beyond the year 2015.

Book People Planet and Progress Beyond 2015

Download or read book People Planet and Progress Beyond 2015 written by and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second in the series of TERI’s annual flagship publication on global sustainable development, People, Planet and Progress Beyond 2015 examines six critical issues of the Planet (climate change, ozone layer depletion, loss of biodiversity, desertification, unsustainable use of natural resources, and environmental pollution) and six crucial issues of the People (food security and safety, health and well-being, education and learning, sustainable habitat, energy for all, and social justice and equity), reviews the Progress made by various regions and countries of the world on each of these issues, and analyses the challenges and opportunities ahead, particularly in the contexts of post-2015 global development agendas, ushered by the Paris Climate Agreement, UN Sustainable Development Goals, and Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The analysis is supported by primary data from authentic sources on a wide range of indicators that make the volume an invaluable resource material on contemporary discourses on global development.

Book Pamirian Crossroads and Beyond

Download or read book Pamirian Crossroads and Beyond written by Hermann Kreutzmann and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-08-08 with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pamirian Crossroads and Beyond Hermann Kreutzmann offers insights in his fieldwork-based research in High Asia during four decades. A human-geographical perspective is pursued in which case studies about colonial and post-colonial boundary-making, exchange relations of mountain communities across international borders, the transformation of agricultural and pastoral practices and the effects of modernisation strategies in neighbouring countries are centred in the Hindukush, Wakhan Quadrangle, Pamirian Crossroads, Karakoram Mountains and Himalaya. Empirical evidence is augmented by in-depth archival research, thus allowing a perspective from the 19th to the 21st century. By shifting the focus to mountain peripheries and emphasising spaces in between urban centres of power in Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, and the Central Asian Republics different arenas of confrontation and effective changes emerge.

Book Marketing Livestock and Meat

Download or read book Marketing Livestock and Meat written by William H Lesser and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking volume presents a comprehensive view of the many concerns of those involved with livestock and meat marketing. During the 1980s, livestock production faced some critical changes. Product and feed prices became less stable, cycles lost their century-old patterns, both competition and trade barriers seemed to rise, and market outlets shrank in number and ownership diversity. At the same time, the United States demography became increasingly older, while new and confusing health concerns about red meat arose rapidly. This practical book introduces the reader to a range of issues of the livestock marketing system and looks ahead to such future issues as biotechnology, human health, and food safety. Considerable interest is given to international trade, an increasingly important sector in the market. Marketing Livestock and Meat is a concise and convenient compendium of diverse information. It provides functionaries in the system with an overall concept of how the market functions as a whole to promote better skills and strategies for marketing of red meats. The author describes specific applications vital to successful operation of the complex and far-reaching marketing system of meat and livestock, including international trade, grades and grading, health matters, demand for meat, price reporting and electronic markets, costs and benefits, and their combination into marketing strategies for producers. To supplement the research, theories, and strategies presented in this important book, there are many charts, graphs, and photographs. All persons connected to the marketing of meat and livestock--undergraduate students in North America, foreign students interested in exporting meat to the U. S., and most segments of the livestock sector, including supply and processing firms and retailers--will benefit from this important book.

Book Technologies for Rainfed Agriculture in Mediterranean Climates

This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of a survey of 1,000 multinational corporations undertaken in 1992 which asked about the importance of environmental issues in investment decisions. The survey shows that most large corporations look systematically at environmental questions when they decide where to invest. Environmental problems appear to have discouraged a number of investments across different industries and the question of liability for past pollution problems at industrial sites was the greatest concern for investors.
