Book Flavor Physics at the Tevatron

Download or read book Flavor Physics at the Tevatron written by Thomas Kuhr and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-09-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reviews the latest experimental results of charm and bottom flavor physics at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. The measurements of lifetimes, branching ratios and mixing properties of heavy flavored hadrons provide important constraints on fundamental parameters of the standard model – the elements of the CKM matrix. Comparisons of experimental results with theoretical predictions allow to search for physics beyond the standard model or to set bounds on parameters of new physics models. The experimental techniques developed at the Tevatron are highly relevant for the next generation flavor physics experiments at the LHC. This book provides the reader a detailed summary of the status of heavy flavor physics at the end of the Tevatron data taking period and the start of the LHC program.

Book CP Violation in Flavor tagged Bs J psi phi Decays

Download or read book CP Violation in Flavor tagged Bs J psi phi Decays written by Khaldoun Makhoul and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we present the results of a time-dependent angular analysis of Bs -+ J/,0 decays performed with the use of initial-state flavor tagging. CP violation is observed in this mode through the interference of decay without net mixing and decay with net mixing, that is, Bs -- J/0 and Bs -+ B, -+ J/q0. The time-dependent angular analysis is used to extract the decay widths of the heavy and light B, eigenstates and the difference between these decay widths AF, - FL - FH. Initial-state flavor tagging is used to determine the matter-antimatter content of the B. mesons at production time. We combine flavor tagging with the angular analysis, which statistically determines the contributions of the CP-even and CP- odd components at decay time, to measure the CP-violating phase 0,. The phase 3, is expressed in terms of elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix as s - arg ( -VtsV4/VcsV*b), and is predicted by the Standard Model to be close to zero, O3SM = 0.02. In the measurement of AF, we use a dataset corresponding to 1.7 fb- of luminosity, collected at the CDF experiment from proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy f = 1.96 TeV. In the measurement of Ps, we use a dataset corresponding to 1.3 fb-1 of collected luminosity. We measure AF, = (0.071+0.064 ± 0.007) ps-1 using the time-dependent angular analysis. Combining the angular analysis with flavor-tagging, we find that assuming the Standard Model predictions of p/ and AF, the probability of a deviation as large as the level of the observed data is 33%. We obtain a suite of associated results which are discussed in detail in this dissertation alongside the main results.

Book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements

Download or read book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements written by Markus Röhrken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Download or read book Angular Analysis of the Decay mathrm B 0 to K 0 mu mu from Pp Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The angular distributions and the differential branching fraction of the decay B0→K*(892)0[mu]+[mu]- are studied using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.5 fb-1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV. Additionally, from 1430 signal decays, the forward-backward asymmetry of the muons, the K*(892)0 longitudinal polarization fraction, and the differential branching fraction are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass squared. Our measurements are among the most precise to date and are in good agreement with standard model predictions.

Download or read book New Measurements of CP Violation in B0 to Ccbar K 0 Decays from Babar written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present new measurements of CP asymmetries in B° → (c{bar c})K{sup 0(*)} decays recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC between 1999 and 2004. We determine sin2[beta] from decay-time distributions of 7730 signal events in a data sample of approximately 227 x 106 [Upsilon](4S) → B{bar B} decays. The measured value of sin2[beta] = 0.722 ± 0.040(stat) ± 0.023(syst) is in agreement with the value expected from the Standard Model. In a separate time-dependent angular analysis of B → J/[psi] K*° (K*° → K{sub S}°[pi]°) decays we measure cos 2[beta] to be positive at 86% CL.

Download or read book Study of CP Violation in B0s u2192 J Decays at written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a universe dominated by matter, the source of CP violation may explain one of the greatest mysteries in particle physics: what happened to the antimatter? The Standard Model successfully describes CP violation in the B+ and Bd0 systems, yet insufficiently accounts for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. The Standard Model predicts a small value of CP violation in the Bs0 meson system, which has only recently been experimentally tested. A measurement of large, anomalous CP violation in the Bs0 system would be a clear indication of new physics sources beyond the Standard Model. This dissertation describes a study of CP violation in approximately 2000 Bs0 → J/?? decays reconstructed in a 2.8 fb-1 data sample collected by the D0 Run II detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. This data was provided by p$ar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV delivered by the Tevatron accelerator between April 2002 and August 2007. Flavor-tagged Bs0 → J/?(?+?-)?(K+K-) decays and an angular analysis are used to study the time evolution of the final state angular distributions. From this analysis, we measure the width difference between the heavy and light mass eigenstates, BsL and BsH , to be ??s = 0.19 ± 0.07 and the CP-violating phase ?s = -0.57-0.30+0.24.

Book Search for CP Violation in D 0 to H h Decays at CDF

Download or read book Search for CP Violation in D 0 to H h Decays at CDF written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I report on a measurement of \CP-violating asymmetries ($A_{\Gamma}$) between effective lifetimes of $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^0$ in fully reconstructed $D^0\to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0\to \pi^+\pi^-$ decays collected in $p\bar{p}$ collisions by the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment. The full CDF data set corresponding to $9.7$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity is used. The flavor of the charm meson at production is determined by exploiting the strong-interaction decay $D^{*+} \to D^0 \pi^+$, while the contamination from mesons originated in $b$-hadron decays is evaluated and subtracted from the sample. Signal yields as functions of the observed decay-time distributions are extracted from maximum likelihood fits and used to measure the asymmetries. The results, $A_\Gamma (K^+K^- ) = \bigl( -1.9 \pm 1.5 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.4 \mathrm{(syst)} \bigr)\times10^{-3}$ and $A_\Gamma (\pi^+\pi^- )= \bigl( -0.1 \pm 1.8 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.3 \mathrm{(syst)} \bigr)\times10^{-3}$, and their combination, $A_\Gamma = \bigl( -1.2 \pm 1.2\bigr)\times10^{-3}$, are consistent with the SM predictions and other experimental determinations.

Download or read book A High Sensitivity Search for CP Violating Rare K sub L Decays and Precision Measurement of the Direct CP Violation Parameter epsilon prime written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fermilab experiments E731, E773, E799, and E832 are a series of experiments to investigate the physics of CP violation, CPT violation, and rare decays of the neutral kaon system. E731 finished data taking in 1988, during past year the full data set analysis was completed and yielded ([var epsilon][prime]/[var epsilon])[sub 2[pi]]=(7.4 [plus minus] 5.2 [stat] [plus minus] 2.9 [syst]) [times] 10[sup [minus]4] . The value favors a high top ark mass value within the Standard Model. E773 tests CPT violation by determining ([Delta][phi])[sub 2[pi]] with an accuracy of about 0.5[sup 0]. Data were taken during the last Fermilab Fixed Target run period between September and November 1991. It is anticipated the data analysis will be finished within a year. E799, with the primary goal of observing direct Cp Violation via searching for the rare decay K[sub L][yields] [pi][sup 0] l [sup +]l[sup [minus]] (where l = e, [mu] [nu]) took test data between November 1991 and January 1992 (Phase 1). Some preliminary results are shown here. E799 (Phase II) and E832 (a follow up experiment of E731) are scheduled to take data after the current Fermilab collider run with a new facility and detector.

Book Measurement of CP Violation Observables and Parameters for the Decays B pm to DK pm

Download or read book Measurement of CP Violation Observables and Parameters for the Decays B pm to DK pm written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the decay B− → DK*− using a sample of 379 x 106?(4S) → B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-factory. We perform a 'GLW' analysis where the D meson decays into either a CP-even (CP+) eigenstate (KK−,?+?−), CP-odd (CP- ) eigenstate (K{sub S}°?°, K{sub S}°?, K{sub S}°?) or a non-CP state (K−?+). We also analyze D meson decays into K+?− from a Cabibbo-favored {bar D}° decay or doubly suppressed D° decay ('ADS' analysis). We measure observables that are sensitive to the CKM angle?: the partial-rate charge asymmetries A{sub CP±}, the ratios R{sub CP±} of the B-decay branching fractions in CP± and non-CP decay, the ratio R{sub ADS} of the charge-averaged branching fractions, and the charge asymmetry A{sub ADS} of the ADS decays: A{sub CP+} = 0.09 ± 0.13 ± 0.06, A{sub CP-} = -0.23 ± 0.21 ± 0.07, R{sub CP+} = 2.17 ± 0.35 ± 0.09, R{sub CP-} = 1.03 ± 0.27 ± 0.13, R{sub ADS} = 0.066 ± 0.031 ± 0.010, and A{sub ADS} = -0.34 {+-} 0.43 {+-} 0.16, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Combining all the measurements and using a frequentist approach yields the magnitude of the ratio between the Cabibbo-suppressed and favored amplitudes, r{sub B} = 0.31 with a one (two) sigma confidence level interval of [0.24, 0.38] ([0.17, 0.43]). The value r{sub B} = 0 is excluded at the 3.3 sigma level. A similar analysis excludes values of? in the intervals [0, 7]{sup o}, [55, 111]{sup o}, and [175, 180]{sup o} ([85, 99]{sup o}) at the one (two) sigma confidence level.

Book Measurement of the B sup 0 phi K sup 0 Decay Amplitudes

Download or read book Measurement of the B sup 0 phi K sup 0 Decay Amplitudes written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a sample of about 227 million B[bar B] pairs recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring the authors perform a full angular analysis of the decay B[sup 0] --> [phi]K*[sup 0](892). They measure the branching fraction to be (9.2 [+-] 0.9 [+-] 0.5) x 10[sup 06] and determine the fractions of longitudinal and parity-odd transverse contributions as f[sub L] = 0.52 [+-] 0.05 [+-] 0.02 and F[sub [perpendicular]] = 0.22 [+-] 0.05 [+-] 0.02, respectively. The phases of the parity-even and parity-odd transverse amplitudes relative to the longitudinal amplitude are found to be [phi][sub [parallel]] = 2.34[sub -0.20][sup +0.23] [+-] 0.05 rad and [phi][sub [perpendicular]] = 2.47 [+-] 0.25 [+-] 0.05 rad, respectively. The authors measure five CP asymmetries which provide important limits on CP violation originating from new physics. They also observe the decay B[sup 0] --> [phi]K*[sup 0](1430).
