Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes economic developments in Angola during the 1990s. A major decline in economic conditions occurred in 1993, in the wake of the resumption of the civil war. In 1993, inflation reached unprecedented levels, overall GDP declined by an estimated 24 percent in real terms, and oil production experienced a downturn for the first time, in part as a result of the destruction of a major onshore oil facility. Export earnings from crude oil were also hit by the decline in world oil prices. Nevertheless, the economy became increasingly dependent on oil.

The IMF report highlights that Angola has returned to a path of solid economic growth, with single-digit inflation, a strong international reserves position, and a stable exchange rate. Growth has slowed to 4 percent in 2013, but is expected to increase to 5 percent in 2014 as oil production recovers. It outlines that Angola’s capacity to repay the fund remains strong, but the macroeconomic framework and institutional setting should be strengthened to facilitate the process of rebuilding external and fiscal buffers.

Book excerpt: Once one of the world's largest staple food producers, Angola is now known as a major oil exporter - the second largest producer in sub-Saharan Africa. Angola is also the world's fourth largest producer of rough diamonds in terms of value, with the potential to become one of the leading global diamond producers. In addition to oil and diamonds, the country is well endowed with agricultural resources which remain mostly untapped. However, despite the country's significant natural wealth, a prolonged civil war, the rapid development of the oil sector, and the policies pursued after Independence in 1975 have left the Angolan economy in a unique situation, characterized by very uneven indicators of development. The Angolan economy is now experiencing massive oil windfall gains that are expected to last throughout the next decade. Since oil rents are to a large part concentrated in the public sector, the question of how the oil revenue should be spent and distributed across present and future generations becomes key to any economic development strategy. This study identifies six core areas where a strategic approach for the development of a broad-based growth strategy is required: (i) the incomplete transition to a market economy; (ii) macroeconomic management; (iii) governance and transparency in the management of the mineral wealth; (iv) the business environment; (v) agriculture; and (vi) public service delivery to the poor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper describes external balance assessment in Angola. Angola’s external balance appears sustainable under current assumptions regarding the evolution of oil prices and output/exports, but the economy’s lack of diversification implies that it remains highly vulnerable to declines in the oil price and disruptions in oil production. Moreover, to the extent that the commercial viability of future oil production from the pre-salt deposits is still uncertain, risks to oil output are on the downside. Given the high pass-through of the nominal exchange rate to prices, improving competitiveness should focus on measures to improve the country’s business climate and infrastructure. The assessment of reserve adequacy shows that international reserves are currently adequate for precautionary purposes, but the high (although declining) level of dollarization in the financial system implies that a higher benchmark is appropriate; staff sees limited scope for drawing down reserves.

Book Economic Report of Angola 2011

Download or read book Economic Report of Angola 2011 written by CENTRO INVEST.UNIV.CATÓLICA LUANDA and published by Leya. This book was released on 2012-06-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We now know the official balance sheets in terms of growth of the Angolan economy in 2011: from a projected rate of 7.6% at the beginning of the year, it moved, after a correction in mid-year, to 3.6% and the latest estimates give account of an actual value of 3.1%. For 2012, official estimates put the real rate of GDP growth at 9.8%, surrounded by high uncertainty, many are the risks of global economic recession. Growth decrease occurred in 2009, 2010 and 2011 will certainly influence the growth trend rate - about 15% between 2002 and 2008 - but there still is a good and safe margin for improvement. Therefore, in terms of growth the country is on track. Because growth is what economies should ensure, that is why they exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angola, located on the west coast of Africa, is a country rich in natural resources such as oil, diamonds, and minerals. It gained independence from Portugal in 1975 after a long and bloody civil war that lasted over 27 years. Since then, Angola has made significant strides toward economic and political stability. With a population of over 32 million people, Angola is the seventh-largest country in Africa and is home to numerous ethnic groups, including the Ovimbundu, Ambundu, Bakongo, and Chokwe. Despite its vast natural resources, Angola faces numerous challenges, including high levels of poverty, unemployment, and income inequality. The country has also struggled with political corruption and a lack of transparency in its government. However, under the leadership of President João Lourenço, Angola has taken steps to combat corruption and improve its economy. The government has implemented policies to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment, and the country has seen an increase in foreign partnerships and infrastructure development. With these efforts, Angola aims to become a stable and prosperous nation in the years to come.

Book An Assessment of the Exchange Rate Pass Through in Angola and Nigeria

Download or read book An Assessment of the Exchange Rate Pass Through in Angola and Nigeria written by Ana Lariau and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper estimates the exchange rate pass-through to consumer price inflation in Angola and Nigeria, with particular emphasis on the changes of the pass-through over time. Even though the two countries share smilar dependence on oil exports, this paper reveals different results. For Angola, the long-run exchange rate pass-through to prices is high, though it has weakened in recent years reflecting the de-dollarization of the economy. In Nigeria, there is no stable long-run relationship between the exchange rate and prices, and changes in the exchange rate do not have a significant pass-through effect on inflation. However, the passthrough effect on core inflation is significant.

Book Angola 2014 Article IV Consultation Staff Report Press Release and Statement by the Executive Director for Angola

Download or read book Angola 2014 Article IV Consultation Staff Report Press Release and Statement by the Executive Director for Angola written by International Monetary Fund. African Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KEY ISSUES Context and outlook: Angola’s recent economic developments have been positive, but softening oil revenue and limited proven oil reserves highlight the need to contain emerging fiscal deficits, preserve policy buffers, and continue diversifying the economy. Focus of consultation: Discussions focused on mitigating the main risks to the macroeconomic framework and, inter alia, policies to return to structural fiscal surpluses over the medium term, and to support economic diversification and inclusive growth, the modernization of the monetary policy framework, and financial stability. Key policy recommendations: • Return to structural fiscal surpluses in line with the objective set forth in Angola’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, by mobilizing additional nonoil tax revenue, improving the efficiency of public investment, and reducing current spending, including by phasing out the costly and regressive fuel subsidies—while mitigating the impact on the poor through well-targeted social assistance. • Adopt an improved medium-term fiscal framework, focusing on the structural fiscal balance to limit the impact of the oil sector on the nonoil economy. • Develop a coherent asset-liability management framework, including a well-designed stabilization fund to shield the budget from oil revenue fluctuations. • Further improve public financial management systems to avoid, inter alia, a recurrence in the future of domestic payments arrears. • Continue improving the business climate to boost economic development, diversification, and competitiveness. • In transitioning over the medium-term toward an inflation targeting regime, enhance the central bank’s capacity to collect and analyze high-frequency economic data, and continue de-dollarizing the economy. • Further strengthen the financial system, by continuing to improve the transparency and accountability of banks, and enhancing bank supervision. • Manage public guarantees transparently and with a view to minimize fiscal costs, as envisaged in the recently-approved law on public guarantees.

Book Angola at the Crossroads

Download or read book Angola at the Crossroads written by Rui Santos Verde and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angola is poised between a past marked by civil war and corruption, and a future of potential economic development. This book examines the post-Civil War period which began in 2002 and saw the rise of a corrupt ruling elite, as well as recent developments in the country. These include the efforts of the current President, João Lourenço, to reform the regime through political openness, economic growth and a crackdown on corruption. Rui Santos Verde analyses the country's recent history of corruption and the current attempts at reform in order to determine whether economic and political development is on the horizon for Angola, or whether these reforms are simply a move towards consolidating President Lourenço's personal power.
