Book excerpt: WHEN BRITON FOUGHT GURKHA No-one who has an interest in British military history is ignorant of the role of the Gurkhas. Their loyalty and courage is as legendary as the affection with which they are regarded by the British military and civilians alike. It was not always so. At the beginning of the 19th century, as the British empire inexorably expanded its inflfl uence to embrace the Indian Sub-Continent, the Nepalese empire itself covered huge areas of Northern India - stretching at times from the borders of the Sikh kingdom in the west to the foothills of the Himalayas where they meet the Bay of Bengal. When these two empires clashed, the British certainly experienced an unpleasant surprise. For they confronted warriors of astonishing bravery, gallantry and ferocity, with no mean grasp of tactics. So began a hard-fought, touch-and-go war between enemies who would one day be inseparable friends. This is the story of that war!

Book excerpt: ASIAN / MIDDLE EASTERN HISTORY: C 1500 TO C 1900. The British love affair with the Gurkhas began during the early nineteenth century clash of the expanding English East India Company and Nepalese hillmen. The remarkable fighting abilities of the Nepalese contrasted against the most incredible British ineptitude. In the end, the British wrested key hill tracts from the Gurkhas. As Sir David Ochterlony - perhaps the only figure who saved the British reputation - was poised to attack Kathmandu, the Gurkhas prudently made peace which maintained their kingdom as an independent state. Pemble's account is a comprehensive history of the conflict, detailing the origins of the war, the consequences of strategic errors, and the enduring impact of the final victory. Even before the campaign had finished, the nucleus of the Gurkha Bridgade had joined the East India Company's Forces. This is a thrilling telling of a little-known war. Fully authenticated and presented in a lively, engaging style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to commonly held perceptions the companys casualties were not high .Gurkhas were top class tacticians but very dumb at the operational level when their opponents launched a manoeuvre rather than frontally attacking them.Major General Ochterlony emerged as the master of manoeuvre warfare in this case.He once again proved that English East India Companys private armys officers were as good and even superior to British Army officers.Ochterlony having been born and educated in the USA and being half American from mothers side was not a biased racist like British and brilliantly decided to recruit Gurkhas in English East India Companys army. An audacious move that a self centered and more biased Emglishman may not have accepted. This is despite the fact that Gurkhas cold bloodedly murdered British prisoners in some cases. In the sum total the Company gained strategically. Its northern border became secure for eternity and it gained a valuable local ally that came to its help in 1857 and in all future British wars by virtue of Gurkha recruitment. The Company for the first time was engaged in mountain warfare and the war was a good primer for initiating Mountain Warfare training. One may state that this was was the first solid case where native troops saw British commanders at their worst and lowered British esteem in Indian eyes and may have contributed to 1857 rebellion . The Afghan war came much later and again was a British success as Afghans behaved like mice in 1857 when the English East India Companys position in India was at its lowest ebb.My interest in this war was connected with lack of good battle maps of this war and here in this humble volume I have attempted to fill this vast cartographic deficit in military history. This is a simple military account of Anglo Nepal war of 1814-16, a private war of a private English East India Company against Nepal.I have concentrated on the maps of this war which are almost non existent. The ethics of this was or the morality of it is not in the scope of this book.

Book excerpt: A British general’s memoir of serving with these famed Nepalese warriors: “An inspiring journey, delightfully related.” —Times Literary Supplement It is 1814 and the Bengal Army of the Honourable East India Company is at war with a marauding Nepal. It is here that the British first encounter the martial spirit of their indomitable foe—the Gurkha hill men from that mountainous independent land. Impressed by their fighting qualities and with the end of hostilities in sight, the Company begins to recruit them into their own ranks. Since then these lighthearted and gallant soldiers have successfully campaigned wherever the British Army has served—from the North West Frontier of India through two World Wars to the contemporary battlefields of the Falklands and Afghanistan’s Helmand Province, with well over one hundred battle honors to their name and at a cost of 20,000 casualties. Here, Peter Duffell separates fact and myth and recounts something of the history, character, and spirit of these loyal and dedicated soldiers—seen through the prism of his service and campaigning as a regular officer in the 2nd King Edward VII’s Own Gurkha Rifles, as the Brigade of Gurkhas Major General and as Regimental Colonel of the Royal Gurkha Rifles.

Book Statemaking and Territory in South Asia

Download or read book Statemaking and Territory in South Asia written by Bernardo A. Michael and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Statemaking and Territory in South Asia: Lessons from the Anglo–Gorkha War (1814–1816)” seeks to understand how European colonization transformed the organization of territory in South Asia through an examination of the territorial disputes that underlay the Anglo–Gorkha War of 1814–1816 and subsequent efforts of the colonial state to reorder its territories. The volume argues that these disputes arose out of older tribute, taxation and property relationships that left their territories perpetually intermixed and with ill-defined boundaries. It also seeks to describe the long-drawn-out process of territorial reordering undertaken by the British in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that set the stage for the creation of a clearly defined geographical template for the modern state in South Asia.

Book An Account of the Kingdom of Nepal

Download or read book An Account of the Kingdom of Nepal written by Francis Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 1819 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Hamilton Buchanan (1762-1829) was a Scottish-born explorer, naturalist, and physician, employed by the British East India Company in a number of capacities from 1794 to 1815. He conducted surveys of Mysore in 1800 and Bengal in 1807-14. This work, published after his return to Scotland, is based on his 14-month stay in Nepal in 1802-03. Buchanan drew upon his own observations and conversations with hereditary chiefs, Buddhist priests, scribes, and others in an attempt to provide a comprehensive account of the country as he found it before the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814-16. Buchanan also drew from an earlier work by Colonel William Fitzpatrick, An Account of the Kingdom of Nepaul, published in London in 1811. In addition to maps and engravings, Buchanan's book includes two noteworthy scientific supplements: a register of the weather from February 1802 to March 1803 and an attempt by Buchanan's colleague, Colonel Crawford, to calculate the height of several Himalayan peaks.
