Download or read book Phraseological Borrowing written by Andrejs Veisbergs and published by Logos Verlag Berlin. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of phraseological borrowing. Based on Latvian material, it reaches far beyond one language. It describes the reasons and motivations, processes and results of the borrowing of phraseological units; examines general theories of phraseology, language contact and borrowing. On the basis of empirical material it sets out a system of phraseological borrowing comprising four types of phraseological loans - phraseological translation loans, full phraseological loans, phraseological semicalques and phraseological transcription loans. It also examines the development of the Latvian system of phraseology and discusses borrowings from various languages separately, including many examples. Borrowing is one of the main ways of phraseology formation. Entire layers of phraseology in most European languages are phraseological loans and internationalisms, most visible, for example, in ancient mythology and biblical phraseology. Borrowed units are adapted, change meanings and form. Native language structures indirectly affect them, as is evident in the assimilation phase, when many units adapt to the language, its expectancy norms and conventions.

Download or read book Word Formation across Languages written by Pavol Štekauer and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into cross-linguistic aspects and typology of word-formation has not been paid relevant and systematic attention by morphologists, and only a few articles dealing with various word-formation issues of this kind appear in journals. The chapters in this volume address this issue by discussing, on contrastive principles, important questions of word-formation in a sample of 26 languages. The focus of the book, as a whole, is on typological features of word-formation in the languages sampled. It is aimed at researchers that have an interest in word-formation in a variety of languages.

Download or read book A Cross linguistic and Cross cultural Analysis of English and Slovene Onomastic Phraseological Units written by Alenka Vrbinc and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates English and Slovene onomastic phraseological units (PUs), and is based on two databases containing English and Slovene PUs with anthroponyms, toponyms and their derivatives. These databases were created using monolingual English and Slovene phraseological dictionaries. The volume provides in-depth, cross-linguistic and cross-cultural research into this segment of phraseology, and represents the most extensive treatment of any contrastive topic involving Slovene and a foreign language. As such, it will serve to be a useful source of information for scholars of Slavonic and other languages, as well as anyone interested in phraseology, cultural specificity, etymology, translation equivalence, and the stereotypical use of ethnonyms.

This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of a series of papers that look at three different aspects of the landscape as seen in dictionaries from across Europe. Multilingual diachronic case studies into lexicographical descriptions of flora, landscape features and colours concentrate on three supposedly simple words: daisies (Bellis perenis L.), hills and the colour red. The work is part of the ongoing LandLex initiative, originally developed as part of the COST ENeL - European Network for e-Lexicography - action. The group brings together researchers in lexicography and lexicology from across Europe and is dedicated to studying multilingual and diachronic issues in language. It aims to valorise the wealth of European language diversity as found in dictionaries by developing and testing new digital annotation tools and a historical morphological dictionary prototype. Download or read book The World Republic of Letters written by Pascale Casanova and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "world of letters" has always seemed a matter more of metaphor than of global reality. In this book, Pascale Casanova shows us the state of world literature behind the stylistic refinements--a world of letters relatively independent from economic and political realms, and in which language systems, aesthetic orders, and genres struggle for dominance. Rejecting facile talk of globalization, with its suggestion of a happy literary "melting pot," Casanova exposes an emerging regime of inequality in the world of letters, where minor languages and literatures are subject to the invisible but implacable violence of their dominant counterparts. Inspired by the writings of Fernand Braudel and Pierre Bourdieu, this ambitious book develops the first systematic model for understanding the production, circulation, and valuing of literature worldwide. Casanova proposes a baseline from which we might measure the newness and modernity of the world of letters--the literary equivalent of the meridian at Greenwich. She argues for the importance of literary capital and its role in giving value and legitimacy to nations in their incessant struggle for international power. Within her overarching theory, Casanova locates three main periods in the genesis of world literature--Latin, French, and German--and closely examines three towering figures in the world republic of letters--Kafka, Joyce, and Faulkner. Her work provides a rich and surprising view of the political struggles of our modern world--one framed by sites of publication, circulation, translation, and efforts at literary annexation.
