Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anglo-Jewish Memories and Other Sermons During the present month I shall, by Divine mercy, complete the threescore years and ten ordinarily allotted to man. Half a century will also shortly have elapsed since I preached my first sermon at the Consecration of the Swansea Synagogue on behalf of my revered father vt, who was prevented by illness from undertaking this duty. These anniversaries have prompted me to publish a selection of Sermons preached during a ministry extending over forty-five years - a task which has been ofttimes urged upon me, but which the burden of official duties has prevented me from accomplishing. In selecting a few of these discourses I have deemed it right to give prominence to those delivered on occasions which moved our hearts both as Englishmen and as Jews. The subject which most deeply stirred the sympathies of the house of Israel during this period was the unhappy persecution of our Russian brethren, a sore recrudescence of which was witnessed only a few years ago. Book Sketches of Anglo Jewish History

Download or read book Sketches of Anglo Jewish History written by James Picciotto and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Anglo-Jewish History At the same time, he made continuous and diligent researches in all quarters where information on the subject that engrossed his attention was likely to be obtained. Libraries, public and private, were ransacked; friends good-naturedly unlocked ancient memories of past events on his behalf, and placed the correspondence of departed relatives at his disposal; eminent members of the Jewish community volunteered valuable information. Great care has been exercised to ensure accuracy; and it has been sought, so far as practicable, to obtain a confirmation of all statements and communications before any fact has been held out to the public as authentic. The result of the labours of the author appeared in print in the Jewish Chronicle, in a series of papers entitled "Sketches of Anglo-Jewish History." As these papers were written pari passu with the progress of the researches, they necessarily bear the character of journalistic essays, rather than of a complete history. Whilst, therefore, the work in question does not aspire to rank as a regular history, the author claims to be the first Israelite who has given a full and connected account of the vicissitudes passed through by the Jews of Great Britain, from the days of the Saxon kings until the middle of the present century. He also claims to have brought to light a mass of original information, the very existence of which was all but unsuspected. These papers, therefore, must prove of greater interest to Jews than to Christians. But though they were written by a Jew for Jews, the author trusts that Christians, whose faith was founded by members of the Jewish race, will find in these chapters, in addition to that which is entirely new, much that may be of interest also to them. Book Whitechapel Noise

Download or read book Whitechapel Noise written by Vivi Lachs and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-14 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archive material from the London Yiddish press, songbooks, and satirical writing offers a window into an untold cultural life of the Yiddish East End. Whitechapel Noise: Jewish Immigrant Life in Yiddish Song and Verse, London 1884–1914 by Vivi Lachs positions London’s Yiddish popular culture in historical perspective within Anglo-Jewish history, English socialist aesthetics, and music-hall culture, and shows its relationship to the transnational Yiddish-speaking world. Layers of cultural references in the Yiddish texts are closely analyzed and quoted to draw out the complex yet intimate histories they contain, offering new perspectives on Anglo-Jewish historiography in three main areas: politics, sex, and religion. The acculturation of Jewish immigrants to English life is an important part of the development of their social culture, as well as to the history of London. In part one of the book, Lachs presents an overview of daily immigrant life in London, its relationship to the Anglo-Jewish establishment, and the development of a popular Yiddish theatre and press, establishing a context from which these popular came. The author then analyzes the poems and songs, revealing the hidden social histories of the people writing and performing them. For example, how Morris Winchevsky’s London poetry shows various attempts to engage the Jewish immigrant worker in specific London activism and political debate. Lachs explores themes of marriage, relationships, and sexual exploitation appear regularly in music-hall songs, alluding to the changing nature of sexual roles in the immigrant London community influenced by the cultural mores of their new location. On the theme of religion, Lachs examines how ideas from Jewish texts and practice were used and manipulated by the socialist poets to advance ideas about class, equality, and revolution, and satirical writings offer glimpses into how the practice of religion and growing secularization was changing immigrants’ daily lives in the encounter with modernity. The detailed and nuanced analysis found in Whitechapel Noise offers a new reading of Anglo-Jewish, London, and immigrant history. It is a must-read for Jewish and Anglo-Jewish historians and those interested in Yiddish, London, and migration studies.
