Book Essays on Anglo Indian Literature

Download or read book Essays on Anglo Indian Literature written by Sujit Bose and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 2004 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains fine examples of Anglo-Indian literature. The original books were written at various periods in the history of Anglo-Indian literature. The first two chapters are attempts to provide an overview of the beginning and the growth in Anglo-Indian prose and poetry. When Bishop Heber wrote his Journals, he described in detail what he saw and understood in India. The chapter on his Journals contains an analysis of Heber's presentation of the socio-economic-cultural condition of India in the early nineteenth century. The essay on Twenty-One Days in India analyses as to how an Englishman smiled at his own countrymen in colonial India. The behavioural peculiarities of the characters are brought into focus, examined and then mildly satirised. This book is reminiscent of the vignettes that were published during the Victorian period in England. The tetralogy The Near and the Far of L.H. Myers is, among others, exemplary of the author's understanding of the orient. The chapter on this novel is an analysis of the orientalism of the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Tales By Rudyard Kipling The stories in this collection capture the varied scents and colours of India in the days of the Raj. Magic and religion, art and life, politics and society, combine into one special stroke of genius in Kipling's imaginative canvas, bringing the short story and the poem together. These tales hold a tremendous appeal for children and adults alike, who can look forward to a dazzling array of incidents and characters, choreographed to perfection. Rudyard Kipling was an English author and poet, born in Bombay, India, and is best known for The Jungle Book series and is regarded as a major "innovator in the art of the short story"; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English language writer to receive the prize, and he remains its youngest-ever recipient. However, later in life Kipling also came to be seen (in George Orwell's words) as a "prophet of British imperialism." Many saw prejudice and militarism in his works, and the resulting controversy about him continued for much of the 20th century. According to critic Douglas Kerr: "He is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognized as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with." We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. Book The Vintage Book of Modern Indian Literature

Download or read book The Vintage Book of Modern Indian Literature written by Amit Chaudhuri and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2004-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years American readers have been thrilling to the work of such Indian writers as Salman Rushdie and Vikram Seth. Now this extravagant and wonderfully discerning anthology unfurls the full diversity of Indian literature from the 1850s to the present, presenting today’s brightest talents in the company of their distinguished forbearers and likely heirs. The thirty-eight authors collected by novelist Amit Chaudhuri write not only in English but also in Hindi, Bengali, and Urdu. They include Rabindranath Tagore, arguably the first international literary celebrity, chronicling the wistful relationship between a village postal inspector and a servant girl, and Bibhuti Bhushan Banerjee, represented by an excerpt from his classic novel about an impoverished Bengali childhood, Pather Panchali. Here, too, are selections from Nirad C. Chaudhuri’s Autobiography of an Unknown Indian, R. K. Narayan’s The English Teacher, and Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children alongside a high-spirited nonsense tale, a drily funny account of a pre-Partition Muslim girlhood, and a Bombay policier as gripping as anything by Ed McBain. Never before has so much of the subcontinent’s writing been made available in a single volume.

Book excerpt: Indian Angles is a new historical approach to Indian English literature. It shows that poetry, not fiction, was the dominant literary genre of Indian writing in English until 1860 and re-creates the historical webs of affiliation and resistance that writers in colonial India--writers of British, Indian, and mixed ethnicities--experienced.
