Book Made in Germany A proof of technical perfection Stereotypes of Germans in British advertising

Download or read book Made in Germany A proof of technical perfection Stereotypes of Germans in British advertising written by Cornelia Neumann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2002-12-07 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0 (A), Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institute for Anglistics/ American Studies), course: Great Britain and Europe - Great Britain in Europe, language: English, abstract: The British attitude towards Germany seems to be ambiguous: there are still many World War II movies on television, there are serious newspaper articles and hostile tabloid cartoons, unfriendly governmental memos and – last but not least – advertising: The people dealing with this issue are of different political background. Therefore, they have contradictory intentions and express either friendly or hostile opinions: Nevertheless, certain stereotypes of Germans are recurrent, regardless of which attitude is represented. The two following lists of German attributes have only recently been compiled: The first one is the result of the Chequers-Conference in March 1990, when Margaret Thatcher discussed the aspects of German reunification with some confidants: The Conference’s consensus on „eternal“ German characteristics was : “insensitivity to the feeling of others, [...] aggressiveness; assertiveness, bullying, egotism [...].” The memo was not designed to be published, therefore one can assume that the participants spoke frankly. Several other „German“ features can be found in a poll in which students were asked about national characteristics: According to the majority, Germans are: "orderly, (disciplined, organises, efficient, obedient to rules, inflexible, punctual); hard-working, (laborious and ambitious); arrogant (particularly in intellectual matters); complex (difficult to understand, Angst-ridden)". My paper will focus on the occurrence of several of these images in advertising, especially in four campaigns released between 1993 and 1997: Three of them deal with German products promoted for German consumers, one of them deals with a British product for the British market but refers to Anglo-German conflict in order to tell its story. We will see that especially the stereotypical German virtues (as mentioned above) are applied in order to emphasise the value of the goods. In contrast, one example shows how negative images are used to show British superiority.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stereotypes continue to dominate contemporary Anglo-German relations. This volume brings together views from psychology, history, cultural theory, literature, pedagogy, but also business and management studies to elucidate the origins, forms, and possible strategies of dealing with clichés of 'the British' and 'the Germans'. By assessing their impact on the personal sphere and that of communication, the media, business, and politics, they demonstrate how an awareness of stereotypes can be part of a realistic assertion of identity in a changing world.

Book Keeping Up With the Germans

Download or read book Keeping Up With the Germans written by Philip Oltermann and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, in the middle of watching an ill-tempered football match between England and Germany, Philip Oltermann's parents tell him that they are going to leave their home city Hamburg behind and move to London. Inspired by his own experience of both countries, Philip Oltermann looks at eight historical encounters between English and German people from the last two hundred years: Helmut Kohl tries to explain German cuisine to the Iron Lady, the Mini plays catch-up with the Volkswagen Beetle, and Joe Strummer has an unlikely brush with the Baader-Meinhof gang. Keeping Up with the Germans is a witty look at the lighter-side of Anglo-German relations over the last 100 years.

Book Britain and the Weimar Republic

Download or read book Britain and the Weimar Republic written by Colin Storer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the two world wars, Germany managed - despite all the political upheavals it was experiencing - to attract extremely large numbers of British travellers and tourists. During the Weimar period in particular, Germany attracted visitors from virtually every section of British society. In this book, Colin Storer moves beyond the traditional scholarly focus on figures such as Christopher Isherwood and John Maynard Keynes to provide the first broad comparative study of British intellectual attitudes towards Weimar Germany. Based on original research and using striking examples from intellectual life and literature it highlights the diversity of British attitudes, challenges received opinions on areas such as the 'inevitable collapse' of the Republic, and seeks to establish why Weimar Germany was so appealing to such a variety of individuals.

Book The Rise of the Anglo German Antagonism 1860 1914

Download or read book The Rise of the Anglo German Antagonism 1860 1914 written by Paul M. Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an account of the rivalry between Great Britain and Germany in the period leading to the First World War. It gives readers a thorough comparison of the two societies, their political cultures, economies, party politics, courts, the role of the press and pressure groups, and so on. It investigates the entire political structure within which diplomacy was conducted and seeks to establish the connection between long term background changes in the two countries and their rising antagonism. The work therefore contributes to the larger debate on the nature of foreign policy, as well as to that on the more specific controversies over Bismarck's imperialism, the Anglo-German naval race, trade rivalries, the role of the radical right, and the origins of the First World War. - Back cover.

Download or read book An Anglo German Dialogue written by Adolf M. Birke and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2000 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 17 in the established series of the "Prince Albert Studies" contains 15 essays and an introductory chapter, reflecting the themes and contents of a lecture programme held at the University of Munich from 1996 to 1999. Eminent scholars from the United Kingdom, all historians from leading British Universities, engaged in "An Anglo-German Dialogue" in the presentation and discussion of their lectures. These lectures provide a panoramic view of British foreign relations over the last 150 years. Paying particular attention to the Anglo-German dimension, the focus moves from the British attitude to the 1848 revolutions, to Kaiser Wilhelm II's relationship to England, right through to the policies of Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair towards Germany and Europe. In the first part aspects of British policy towards Germany and Europe in the mid and late nineteenth century are examined, while in the second part the focus is on the role of monarchs in the foreign policy. The third section deals with the nuances of British reactions to various aspects of German attitudes and policies from Gustav Stresemann's concept of international relations. The fourth part has as its theme the contradictions and tensions in Britain's retreat from the world stage. The final section, in examining Britain and Europe since the end of the Second World War, brings the story right up to date, including analysis of both the Labour and Conservative parties' policies towards Europe.

Book German Anglophobia and the Great War 1914 1918

Download or read book German Anglophobia and the Great War 1914 1918 written by Matthew Stibbe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major study of German attitudes toward England during the Great War, 1914-18, continues the story of Anglo-German antagonism where previous studies have ended. It shows how German propaganda sought to portray Britain as the main enemy of the German people, and focuses on the decision to launch unrestricted submarine warfare against Britain in January 1917, thus bringing the United States into the conflict. The book concludes by examining the contribution of anti-English feeling to the growth of right wing extremism in Germany after the war.

Book Exorcising Hitler

Download or read book Exorcising Hitler written by Frederick Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of the Third Reich in 1945 was an event nearly unprecedented in history. Only the fall of the Roman Empire fifteen hundred years earlier compares to the destruction visited on Germany. The country's cities lay in ruins, its economic base devastated. The German people stood at the brink of starvation, millions of them still in POW camps. This was the starting point as the Allies set out to build a humane, democratic nation on the ruins of the vanquished Nazi state-arguably the most monstrous regime the world has ever seen. In Exorcising Hitler, master historian Frederick Taylor tells the story of Germany's Year Zero and what came next. He describes the bitter endgame of war, the murderous Nazi resistance, the vast displacement of people in Central and Eastern Europe, and the nascent cold war struggle between Soviet and Western occupiers. The occupation was a tale of rivalries, cynical realpolitik, and blunders, but also of heroism, ingenuity, and determination-not least that of the German people, who shook off the nightmare of Nazism and rebuilt their battered country. Weaving together accounts of occupiers and Germans, high and low alike Exorcising Hitler is a tour de force of both scholarship and storytelling, the first comprehensive account of this critical episode in modern history.

Book The British Press and Germany 1936 1939

Download or read book The British Press and Germany 1936 1939 written by Franklin Reid Gannon and published by Oxford : Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book shows that the national British Press generally shared a common revulsion against Nazi barbarities, which were well known. Beyond this common denominator, however, the British Press reacted to Nazi Germany mainly along Left-Right political lines over issues formulated a decade before the Nazi came to power and in many ways having little or nothing to do with Germany itself. Basing himself upon a careful reading of the ten major British daily and Sunday newspapers supplemented with important new material from the archives of The Times, the Manchester Guardian, and several collections of personal papers, Dr Gannon concludes that Hitler and his demands were like a funnel into which British attitudes on every question from armaments to xenophobia were poured: what emerged from the funnel was the single policy of appeasement."--Book Jacket.

Book The German Gothic Novel in Anglo German Perspective

Download or read book The German Gothic Novel in Anglo German Perspective written by Patrick Bridgwater and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length study of the main German contributors to the Gothic canon, to each of whom a chapter is devoted, The German Gothic Novel in Anglo-German Perspective is an original historical and comparative study that goes well beyond the necessary review of the evidence to include much new material, many new insights and pieces of analysis, and some fundamental changes of perspective. The book aims to put the record straight in bibliographical and literary historical terms, and to act as a reference guide to facilitate future research, so that anyone working on the German Gothic novel or on Anglo-German interactions in the field of Gothic, will find there references to all the relevant secondary literature. The German Gothic Novel in Anglo-German Perspective is addressed to Germanists, but also to teachers and students of English, American and comparative literature, for there is at present hardly a ‘hotter’ subject than Gothic. The book’s emphasis on the Gothic work of canonical writers should prompt even conservative German Departments to reconsider their attitude to Gothic. Being addressed to scholars and students of German, German quotations are given in German, but English translations are added for the convenience of English and American scholars and students of Gothic, who represent another important section of the books’ target audience.
