Book excerpt: The Continuing Anglican Movement is made up of those who strive to "continue" in the way of traditional Anglicanism, which many feel the American Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada have abandoned in their Prayer Book reforms, policies regarding the ordination of women, the full inclusion of gays and lesbians, and other issues. This is the only full-length history of the Continuing Anglican movement in the United States and Canada, an engaging, fascinating, and often painful ecclesial saga-available once again in a new edition from the Apocryphile Press.

Book excerpt: The important questions in ecumenical dialogue centre upon issues of authority and order. This book uses the development of ministry in the early Methodist Church to explore the origins of the Methodist Order and identify the nature of authority exercised by John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church. Showing Methodism as having been founded upon Episcopalian principles, but in a manner reinterpreted by its founder, Adrian Burdon charts the journey made by John Wesley and his people towards the ordination of preachers, which became such a major issue amongst the first Methodist Societies. Implications for understanding the nature and practice of authority and order in modern Methodism are explored, with particular reference to the covenant for unity between English Methodists and the Church of England.

Book Anglican Communion in Crisis

Download or read book Anglican Communion in Crisis written by Miranda Hassett and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sign outside the conservative, white church in the small southern U.S. town announces that the church is part of the Episcopal Church--of Rwanda. In Anglican Communion in Crisis, Miranda Hassett tells the fascinating story of how a new alliance between conservative American Episcopalians and African Anglicans is transforming conflicts between American Episcopalians--especially over homosexuality--into global conflicts within the Anglican church. In the mid-1990s, conservative American Episcopalians and Anglican leaders from Africa and other parts of the Southern Hemisphere began to forge ties in opposition to the American Episcopal Church's perceived liberalism and growing toleration of homosexuality. This resulted in dozens of American Episcopal churches submitting to the authority of African bishops. Based on wide research, interviews with key participants and observers, and months Hassett spent in a southern U.S. parish of the Episcopal Church of Rwanda and in Anglican communities in Uganda, Anglican Communion in Crisis is the first anthropological examination of the coalition between American Episcopalians and African Anglicans. The book challenges common views--that the relationship between the Americans and Africans is merely one of convenience or even that the Americans bought the support of the Africans. Instead, Hassett argues that their partnership is a deliberate and committed movement that has tapped the power and language of globalization in an effort to move both the American Episcopal Church and the worldwide Anglican Communion to the right.

Book Orthodox Anglican Identity

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

Download or read book Orthodox Anglican Identity written by Charles Erlandson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the postmodern world we inhabit is highly fragmented, contested, and conflicted, we all have one thing in common: we are experiencing identity crises. Religious traditions are not immune to these crises, and orthodox Anglicans have been experiencing their own issues with identity since the 2003 consecration of an openly homosexual man. Orthodox Anglicans want to say who they are as both orthodox and Anglican, but they are also finding it difficult to articulate a clear and coherent identity, especially an Anglican one. This orthodox Anglican pursuit of a renewed sense of self in a complex and fragmented world is a microcosm of our postmodern context, and an examination of their quest holds enticing clues to our own urgent searches for meaning and identity. Think of this book as a kind of story: the story of a worldwide church who, when its identity was threatened, took counsel together to renew and revitalize its sense of self. In the process, it not only faced many dangers and difficulties but also learned much about who it was and who it wanted to be.

  • Author : R. William Franklin
  • Publisher : Church Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 1996-06-01

Download or read book Anglican Orders written by R. William Franklin and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 1996-06-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review of the Apostolicae Curae presents six essays by American and British contributors, both Anglican and Roman Catholic, on the 100th anniversary of the papal condemnation of Anglican Orders. The book also includes the English translation of the original papal document and the Anglican response to it at that time. An introduction by R. William Franklin describes the history of the tensions between the two churches and the theological differences between them. Franklin helps the reader understand the relevance of these 100-year-old documents to today's ecumenical concerns and hopes. From the Foreword: "This forthright and unequivocal pronouncement, which the Roman Catholic Church has never rescinded or modified, is of such critical importance to the Anglican-Roman Catholic relations that it deserves to be memorialized in print a hundred years later, and to be examined in depth, both on the account of the arguments it deployed, and of the consequences that have flowed (and still flow) from it." --Hugh Montefiore, Bishop of Birmingham (ret.)
