Book The Free Church of England

Download or read book The Free Church of England written by John Fenwick and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-08-24 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Christians are completely unaware that for over 200 years there has existed in England, and at times in Wales, Scotland, Canada, Bermuda, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and the USA, an episcopal Church, similar in many respects to the Church of England, worshipping with a Prayer Book virtually identical to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and served by bishops, presbyters and deacons whose orders derive directly from Canterbury, and ecumenically enriched by Old Catholic, Swedish, Moravian and other successions. The Free Church of England as an independent jurisdiction within the Universal Church began in the reign of George III. In 1991 the Church sent a bishop to George Carey's Enthronement as Archbishop of Canterbury. In addition to presenting for the first time a detailed history of the Free Church of England, John Fenwick also explores the distinctive doctrinal emphases of the denomination, its Constitution, its liturgical tradition, its experience of the historic episcopate, and its many connections with other churches (including the Reformed Episcopal Church in the USA). He discusses why the Church has, so far, failed to fulfil the vision of its founders, and what the possible future of the Church might be - including a very significant expansion as many Anglicans and other Christians considering new options discover this historic, episcopal, disestablished Church with its international connections and ecumenical character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the postmodern world we inhabit is highly fragmented, contested, and conflicted, we all have one thing in common: we are experiencing identity crises. Religious traditions are not immune to these crises, and orthodox Anglicans have been experiencing their own issues with identity since the 2003 consecration of an openly homosexual man. Orthodox Anglicans want to say who they are as both orthodox and Anglican, but they are also finding it difficult to articulate a clear and coherent identity, especially an Anglican one. This orthodox Anglican pursuit of a renewed sense of self in a complex and fragmented world is a microcosm of our postmodern context, and an examination of their quest holds enticing clues to our own urgent searches for meaning and identity. Think of this book as a kind of story: the story of a worldwide church who, when its identity was threatened, took counsel together to renew and revitalize its sense of self. In the process, it not only faced many dangers and difficulties but also learned much about who it was and who it wanted to be.

Book History of the Episcopal Church Revised Edition

This book was released on 1999-09 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful, all-encompassing chronicle spanning 400 years traces the fascinating rise of the Episcopal Church, founded in an age of fragmentation and molded by the powerful movements of American history: the Great Awakening; the American Revolution; the Civil War; two World Wars and the Depression; and the social upheavals of the post World War II years. This revised edition of the now-classic text on the Episcopal Church brings the story up-to-date with a new chapter on the 1990's. This new chapter pays special attention to the Church's renewal efforts, Presiding Bishop Browning's time in office, the issue of homosexuality, changing leadership dynamics, liturgical change, and Lambeth 1998.

Book A Treasure to be Shared

Download or read book A Treasure to be Shared written by Walter Oxley and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-07 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Treasure to Be Shared is intended to promote a more widespread knowledge of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus, promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. The Apostolic Constitution provided for Personal Ordinariates for Anglicans entering into full communion with the Catholic Church. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Apostolic Constitution, an academic symposium in the year 2019 sponsored by the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, provided historical, liturgical, canonical and ecumenical perspectives on the fruits of the Apostolic Constitution for the wider Church. The hope is that the reader will see the Personal Ordinariates of The Chair of Saint Peter in the United States and Canada, Our Lady of Walsingham in Great Britain and Our Lady of the Southern Cross in Australia as a gift to the Church, and a treasure to be shared by all.

Book The Anglican Tradition from a Postcolonial Perspective

Download or read book The Anglican Tradition from a Postcolonial Perspective written by Kwok Pui-lan and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a major scholar, a postcolonial perspective on key current and historical issues in Anglicanism, foregrounding the voices of theologians and church leaders from the Global South. In recent years, the Anglican Communion has been consumed by debates about gender, sexuality, authority, and biblical interpretation, which have frequently divided along North/South lines. Much of these controversies stem from the colonial history of Anglicanism. Written by a pioneer in postcolonial theology, this groundbreaking volume challenges Eurocentrism and racism in the Anglican Communion by highlighting the voices of theologians and church leaders from the Global South. The Anglican Tradition from a Postcolonial Perspective scrutinizes Anglican theology and history to advocate for the decolonization of the Church. It examines controversies on Christianity and the social order, economic justice, worship, gender and sexuality, women’s leadership, and the Church’s mission in a religiously pluralistic world.

Download or read book Frozen Institutions written by Bruce N. Kaye and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks for the memories—well, maybe not. It has been hard work getting over the break up of the fifteen-hundred-year Anglican marriage of church and state—the so-called English Christendom. It is still a work in progress because the marriage left behind so many unconscious assumptions about power, institutions, and community relations. The first group of essays in this book challenges some of the frozen elements in church institutions, in particular habits of orthodoxy, catholicity, and canonical Scripture. They are framed in the context of the struggles of the Anglican Communion. The second set of essays refer to the Anglican Church of Australia and some attempts at de-frosting its institutions. These are lectures and papers given across Australia mostly during the author’s time as General Secretary of the Anglican Church of Australia. The last essay is an account of a current struggle over the blessing of a same-sex couple legally married under recently changed civil law. It illustrates the role of the constitution of the church in this dispute. The loose federation of dioceses in the constitution has generally enabled dioceses to live separately. The danger in this has been the specter of a church made up of diocesan silos rather than of engaged fellowship. However, the federal structure does not need to work that way. Indeed, in the present conflict situation this very looseness could be used to provide space for more respectful engagement. How this crisis is handled will be an early clue as to whether the church is up to it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last three quarters of a century, the rate and character of change in all human affairs have been phenomenal. How has the Christian church in its various forms reacted the this series of revolutions—revolutions which have often vitally affected its own ways of thinking, its styles of life, and its worship? In particular, how has it responded to the idea of visible Christian unity, which long lay dormant, but now has taken fire in the lives of millions of its members? This book seeks to answer these and similar questions. It gives what is at many points an “inside story” of the significant events, since the author has taken an active part, and often a leading part, in a great deal of what he describes.

Book The Choral Revival in the Anglican Church 1839 1872

Download or read book The Choral Revival in the Anglican Church 1839 1872 written by Bernarr Rainbow and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2001 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey of an important period in the development of the choral tradition in the Anglican church. When Bernarr Rainbow was director of music at the College of St Mark and St John, Chelsea, he came across the 1849 diary of service music of Thomas Helmore. Astonished at its breadth of repertoire, he was inspired to investigate the circumstances of the document. His findings are recorded in this book, which sets Thomas Helmore's contribution in perspective against the background of the Choral Revival as a whole. In tracing the history of the remarkable revival of care for the music of the liturgy, the author produced a socio-musical history of a period vital in the evolution of the Anglican Church, and made clear, probably for the first time, how music in the Anglican Churchcame to follow lines which are unique in Christendom. His book was originally published at a time of important changes in ecclesiastical thinking; his presentation of the decisions taken in the past which led to the existing relationship between choirs and congregations, interesting in itself, is also valuable in the continuing debate.
